1 Volume 3, Issue nd July 2017 Armenian Church News Diocese of the Armenian Church in the United Kingdom and Ireland In this issue: 7th Annual Armenian Street Festival: Highlights The Upcoming Feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary Announcements Upcoming Events 7 th Annual Armenian Street Festival Highlights On Sunday, 16th July 2017, the seventh annual Armenian Street Festival (ASF) took place in Iverna Gardens, Kensington, London. Diocese of the Armenian Church of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland ASF is a major cultural event that unites Armenians across the United Kingdom and Ireland - a celebration of cultural identity, history and faith, as well as vital fundraising for the Church. His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, Primate It is one of the projects of the Armenian Church Trust (ACT UK) and is organized under the auspices of the Armenian Church in the UK and Ireland.

2 There were special guests, including clergy of many denominations, dignitaries, talented performers. Visitors came from different countries such as Belgium, Greece and others as well as different cities of the UK. From early morning, the Iverna Gardens was fenced off from traffic and representatives of various Armenian organisations were setting up their stalls to promote their activities such as music, theatre and cultural groups, and sell products including art, crafts, publications and food. The day started with the Divine Liturgy being celebrated in St. Sarkis Church followed by the medieval outdoor ceremony of Andastan the Blessing of the Four Corners of the Earth. After this special blessing, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the festival. This was conducted by His Grace Bishop Hovakim Manukyan and The Worshipful the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Councillor Ribbon cutting- Cllr. Marie-Therese Rossi After the Andastan ceremony Marie-Therese Rossi in the presence of Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Gerard Hargreaves & Dignitaries. After the official opening and speeches by the special guests His Grace Bishop Hovakim addressed the crowd with a welcoming speech. During the afternoon, the entertainment programme was led by MCs Shakeh Major Tchilingirian. The programme started with the DJ Vartan entertaining the guests with Armenian music and continued with poet and writer Gayaneh Khach who recited her poem Our Patriotic Culture. Afterwards, two dances were performed by the Akhtamar Armenian performance group under the guidance of Arsen Zakaryan & Karine Avetisyan. Ara Petrosyan (Dhol) and Arkadi Antonian (Accordion) continued the entertainment programme with popular music. Gayaneh Khach and DJ Vartan on stage 2

After performing a few of her songs she was joined on stage by Andre Simonian, the lead singer of the Beautified Project. They performed "Քեզ եմ երգելու" (I Will Sing You) song that was performed initially on the ruins of Zvartnoc. Other singers included Katya D'Janoeff with her modern and unique style and a young, talented singer Erik Antonyan. Actor Kevork Malikyan was also present and addressed the audience from stage. 5 The Children's entertainment corner was operating all day under the guidance of Shiraz Vartanian. There was a balloon artist and many other fun activities for children. 5

6 DJ Vartan was on stage throughout the day entertaining the guests. The performance part ended with the Circle of Life, a dance in a circle, organized by Shakeh Major Tchilingirian. The event ended with the raffle, auction and the closing speeches. The atmosphere during the day was festive and even the rain that started at some point in the afternoon couldn't affect the joyous and celebratory mood of people who continued dancing under the rain. 6

12 The Upcoming Feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary This year's Feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary will take place Sunday, 13th of August. The Feast of Assumption is also known as the day of Blessing of Grapes. Here is some information about the the Feast of the Assumption which you can also access on the Armenian Diocese website by clicking here. The Assumption of Saint Mary is a feast which commemorates the death and assumption of the Mother of our Lord, Jesus Christ to Heaven. In the Armenian Church there are other feasts of Saint Mary. It is celebrated in the Armenian Church on the nearest Sunday to 15th August, and is continued for nine days according to the arrangement of Catholicos Nerses Shnorhali (XII century). In the other ancient churches, the Feast of the Assumption of Saint Mary is always celebrated on the 15th August, whether it falls on a Sunday or on a weekday. The Feast of the Assumption of Saint Mary was established on the following tradition: Her death happened on the 15th August. However, the Apostle Bartholomew was absent at the time of her funeral. Upon his return to Jerusalem, he wanted to see her. When they opened the tomb and did not find her body there, this empty tomb caused them to think that her body was transmitted to Heaven, just as Jesus had formerly promised her. On the first day of this feast after the offering of the Mass, the grapes are blessed in the Armenian Church. Again the Catholicos, Nerses the Graceful, is the founder of this ceremony and prayer for the blessing of the grapes. The hymns of this feast day were written by the Catholicos, Nerses the Graceful. 12

13 Summer Camp in Romania with Bishop Hovakim Bishop Hovakim is taking a group of young people (18-30 years old) from London to summer camp in Romania located at the Hatjkatar monastery in the city of Suceava. Hatjkatar means fulfilment of desires and has reputed power of granting miracles to believers. It is the oldest Armenian monastery in Europe built in The camp is organized by the Armenian Diocese in Romania on the occasion of celebrations of the Feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and will take place on 9-14th of August. Activities will include prayers, bible studies, discussions, entertainment, as well as celebration of the feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. It is also an opportunity to make new friends as young people will come from all over Europe and Africa and to prepare for the youth conference that will take place in Armenia in The date of arrival to Bucharest is 9th of August. Departure to Suceava will take place on 10th of August at 8am from the Church of Arajnordanist. 14 Deacon Training Programme The Deacon Training Programme was re-launched on 25 th January 2017 at St. Sarkis Church. Every Wednesday, Deacons in training attend church and are instructed in the traditions of serving at the altar. 16 Summer School-Camp "Epic": Unique Educational Project in Armenia Summer School-Camp EPIC is a unique project which will take place in Armenian most beautiful resort Tsakhkadzor from 1 to 21 August, What s amazing about EPIC, that it combines education with leisure in a nature environment, students get a chance to form the list of courses and activities themselves, and that it incorporates games training both body and mind, and even an open air rock fest and more exceptional events! You will get a chance to learn and communicate with worldwide top specialist from various fields. For those students who want to discover new places, culture and nature, participate at educational, creative and sport activities while also being taken away by an idyllic forestmountain landscape, there is a great opportunity ahead which combines it all. Students may become a part of an international non-formal platform which brings together more than 300 students from the best universities of the world: Europe, USA, Russia, China, Kuwait, Japan, UAE and other countries. This platform will give them a chance to get quality education along with a great opportunity for interaction, cultural exchange and friendship. The program is interdisciplinary in its nature so it gives students an opportunity to broaden their worldview by combining leisure with education. Among the invited guests and speakers will be famous people: Serj Tankian - musician, you may know from System of a Down, Garik Israelian - influential astrophysicist, Henrikh Mkhitaryan - successful football player, and others. At the end of the Summer School-Camp the participants will be provided with the certificates that meet international standards. 17 Announcement From The Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia The Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia re-launches Ari Tun program for the Diaspora youth. The goal of the program is to familiarize Armenian Diaspora youth spread all over the world with its Homeland, instill them acknowledge their national identity, familiarize them with the traditions and practices of their people, Armenian families and the Armenian soul, foster a closer cooperation of Armenia and the Diaspora both in educational-cultural and moral-psychological respect. In 2017 the program will be launched on June 18 and will continue till August 26, in 8 phases (each phase will last 14 days: 9 days with a host family, 4 days in camp). Diaspora youngsters from 13 to 18 will be hosted in Armenian families and will participate in a four-day camp envisaged by the program. The program is open for application by young people who did not participate in the program before. The choice of host families is carried out by the administrative districts of Yerevan, RA community councils, and RA Ministry of Diaspora. The participants stay with the Armenian families is not remunerated. The process of selection of groups and individuals for program participation is carried by the Diaspora community structures, educational institutions and the Diaspora Armenian organizations, with the support of RA diplomatic representations in the given country. Individual applications for participation in the program are also welcomed. Travel expenses are covered either by the participants or sponsors. The Ministry of Diaspora of the Republic of Armenia meets the participants upon their arrival and sees them off when they leave Armenia. Armenian language classes, visits to the museums, sightseeing tours are also organized by the Ministry. During the camping days educational programs, classes of Armenian language and Armenian Studies, national songs and dances will be organized as well. Meetings with state, public and cultural figures will also take place. In order to ensure safety during the trips the participants will be accompanied by the doctor and the police. Garni Temple was dedicated to the god Mihr (the God of Sun). The temple features 24 columns and symbolizes 24 hours of a day. Garni Temple is the only Pagan temple in Armenia. Visit the Monastery of Geghardavank, which was carved out of the solid rock between the 11th and 13th centuries and was recognized by UNESCO as a universal treasure. Geghard, or more fully Geghardavank, meaning "the Monastery of the Spear", originates from the spear which had wounded Jesus at the Crucifixion. The complex is rich in subtle sculptural embellishments and many striking khachkars (cross-stones) Day 7, 1 OCT Yerevan - ARMAVIR REGION /Etchmiadzin, Zvartnots, Sardarapat, Ashtarak, Mughni/ Breakfast at hotel. Visiting the Etchmiadzin Cathedral. It is the Mother Church of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the central building of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Visit the Snt. Hripsimé Church and Snt. Gayane churches. Drive to Sardarapat. Visiting the memorial complex to the Battle of Sardarapat and the Sardarapat Ethnography museum. Proceed to Zvartnots. Visit Zvartnots Church built (7th c). Though it is in ruins but it continues to admire its visitors with its unique architectural type. Depart to Ashtarak. Visit Mughni villiage. Mughni is home to the 14th-century Saint Gevorg Monastery, which was formerly a popular pilgrimage site and the seat of an archbishop.
