2 Living the Word of Christ Together Pastor: Deacons: Office Administrator: Rectory Phone: Office Phone: Fax: website: Father Bruce Riebe Bill Fredrick, Robert Kirschner Michele Wiltshire (24 hrs.) August 29: Beheading of John the Baptist St. John the Baptist is known as the forerunner of Jesus the voice crying out, Prepare the way of the Lord (Mk 1:3) Clothed in camel hair and nourished on locusts and wild honey, John lived an austere life of intense prayer in the Judean desert. During the reign of Emperor Tiberius circa A.D. 27l, John began preaching a baptism of repentance. People from Jerusalem and every part of Judea flocked to be baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. When Jesus presented himself, John initially resisted: I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me? (Mt 3:14). After Jesus emerged from the waters, John saw the Holy Spirit descend upon him. Later, John declared, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world! (Jn 1:36). John the Baptist bore humble witness to the truth without compromise, even when it meant rebuking those in political power. Thus, when King Herod married his brother s wife, Herodias, John did not hesitate to denounce the act as adultery. Cast into prison and later beheaded by Herod, John s martyrdom gave eloquent witness to his statement, He (Jesus) must increase, I must decrease (Jn 3:30). Following Christ s testimony that no one is greater than John (Lk 7:28), the Church honors St. John the Baptist as one of its greatest saints. Saturday is a Simple Holyday. The liturgy will be celebrated outdoors at the St. John Paul II Chapel at 9:00 a.m. (This is the final outdoor Holyday liturgy. In September we ll be back in the church proper.) There is bench seating available. You can also bring your own chair or pick one up from the pavilion storage room. Feel free to park below even on the grass if we haven t had any recent rain. Plan to remain afterwards for some cake/coffee served by the Ladies Auxiliary.

He currently is on special assignment by the bishop in conjunction with the Eparchial Pastoral Plan. (Father will be returning from vacation this evening.) Included in today s Byzz Line is the A.C.E. (Adult Catholic Education) brochure presenting the date/ time/speaker/topic/place for the lectures. We have joined with seven local Roman Catholic Churches to be part of this outstanding speaker series. Please take the time to review what is being offered. Circle the dates on your calendars. Read the comments from participating pastors. The Byzz Line will contain reminders as each program draws near. Next week s Byzz Line will contain the calendar for September. If anyone has a date that needs to be published, contact Father by Wednesday. In order to help you include as many parish events/activities on your schedule as possible, a calendar will be printed the weekend prior to the first Sunday of the month (through the month of May) for inclusion in the bulletin. We ll also attempt to have it handy on the website. (The deadline will always be the Wednesday prior to publication.) Starting September 6 the Sunday liturgy will revert to the 10:30 time slot. Next Sunday Bishop John will ordain Cyril Pinchak to the Order of Subdiaconate at the 10:00 Hierarchical Liturgy. Many monks from the Jesuit Province will also be in attendance. It will be a unique experience. Please try and attend. (His ordination to the Diaconate and Priesthood will no doubt be someplace other than St. Joe s even out of town.) There will be a light lunch afterwards in the hall. Al and Mary Pinchak would like everyone to join them.
4 We are happy to announce that a call-out for choir members is set for Wednesday, September 9, at 7:00 in the choir loft. Anyone interested in being part of the choir should come. 5 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. John 12:26 The Order of Subdiaconate (Below is information on what you will witness next Sunday as well as some general information on a Subdeacon.) Ordination to the rank of Subdeacon takes place in the middle of the church, prior to the Liturgy and following the vesting of the bishop. After the lector is vested in the sticharion, the deacons bring the bishop the orarion of the sticharion. When the bishop makes the sign of the cross over the orarion, the ordinand kisses the orarion and the bishop s hand, and the deacons wrap the orarion around the ordinand. The subdeacon depicts (in his person) the ministry of the angels; for this reason, during the ordination he is given an orarion, which is girded about him in crosswise fashion, to represent the wings with which the cherubim cover themselves as they stand before the throne of the Word of God. After girding with the orarion, the bishop makes the sign of the Cross three times over the head of the ordinand and rests his hand on his head as he reads the prayer (or ordination). In it he entreats the Lord in behalf of the ordinad, saying:...and grant that he may love the majesty of Thy house, may stand before the gates of Thy holy temple, and may light the lamp of the habitation of Thy glory. After the bishop s prayer, deacons hand the ordinand a basin and drape a towel over him; and one of the deacons pours water over the bishop s hands. The ordinand kisses the bishop s hands and goes to the place indicated to him, where he stands, holding the basin, ewer and towel until the Cherubic Hymn. During the chanting of the Cherubic Hymn, he is brought before the Royal Doors. At the Great Entrance, the ordinand follows last of all the servers, and the bishop receives first the paten and then the chalice, and then all those serving enter the sanctuary. Subdeacons are persons who serve the sacred ministers. Concerning the institution of the rank of subdeacon, various scholars have different opinions. Some ascribe its institution to Jesus Christ Himself; others, to the apostles; and yet others maintain that it originated at the end of the first century. It is beyond doubt, however, that its origin is ancient. There is a clear understanding of it in a letter of St. Cyprian and in the Apostolic Constitutions. According to the ancient order, it is the subdeacon s duty to prepare the laving of the clergymen s hands. This he carries out even during the course of his own ordination. It was also his responsibility to escort the catechumens out after the deacon s exclamation, Catechumens depart! At the present time, subdeacons only take part in hierarchial services and minister to the bishop they vest him, escort and support him, they hand him the candlesticks (trikirion and kikirion) and hold them.
