8 EXPECTATIONS FROM BISA V ASIAN/OCEANIAN BISHOPS 1. Exchange of views and experiences. 2. Learn from experience of others, obtain info and adapt and apply what I learnt wherever applicable. 3. An experience of the other regions as an input for local churches concerning the human development and social action. 4. Practical help by sharing experience with participants. 5. More firmly cooperation and greater solidarity for human development in Asia. 6. Sharing of mutual problems in our part of the world. There is no doubt that we can learn from each other, especially in seeing at first hand the problems and aspirations of people in other countries. Perhaps we can also have insights from our own areas which can be shared with others. 7. Self-reflection of Churches in Asia. 8. To reflect with the other bishops of the Third World regarding the problems that affect them and their people and learn with them. 9. Reality of societies in Asia. 10. To know actual situation in Asian countries through the exposure in order to transmit this experience to my collaborators. 11. To comprehend problems others are facing and to see them from their point of view. 12. I hope to see the situation in a Third world country other than the Philippines. 13. Some practical steps to help each other, no matter how small they may be. 14. BISA has fostered understanding and friendship among Asian Bishops and Hierarchies besides of course conscientizing them about the demands of Justice and Peace. I expect a deepening of this in BISA V. as well as involving some Bishops from the West in this dynamism. 15. The bishops of the FIRST WORLD to know their views and reactions regarding the problems of the THIRD WORLD. 16. That this session contribute to the raising of consciousness and dialogue that began with the other BISA sessions. 17. Relation between domestic and international problems of justice and peace. 18. Ways of international cooperation of Commissions for Justice and Peace. 19. BISA V should formulate a basic strategy for social animation, and conscientization at grassroots level. 20. The discussions that follow the exposure could be used as an occasion to surface the priorities for social action in the countries represented. The statement should take the format of a blueprint for action, for implementation and feedback before BISA IV. 21. Broader view of development needs and possibilities. 22. To learn what other dioceses are doing in this matter of Non-Formal Education which I consider the key to development. 23. Pastoral possibilities. 24. That it might help me to see better how we can in this day and age manage to keep people interested in religion. How we can have people to come to church on Sunday and get involved in parish activities. How we can manage to get our young people to want to prepare and to want a Catholic marriage. 25. To help me see how far we can go in the Ecumenical efforts we are making and whether the Catholic Church alone gives in all along and the other religions hold on to what they have very firmly. 26. To discover what the true role of ex-patriates, Bishops and Priests, in today in this age of localization. What can be done to speed up localization on the Church without destroying many of the elements that make our Church so strong and unified. 27. Are Deacons being trained elsewhere and for what purpose?
9 28. How are Bishops meeting with the problems of Sisters Congregations and also priests in civil dress. 29. How others are adapting the Liturgy to local ways and customs. 30. Great, with regard to: refugee problem International year of the child Communism in the light of recent developments all these in relation to the theme of BISA V INTEGRAL HUMAN DEVELOPMENT 31. A better grasp of the deplorable situation of Asia s poor through common effort, discussion and deliberation as brother bishops; a keener perspective of the signs of the times through common reflection, meditation and prayer in the spirit of the last FABC Plenary Assembly finally a better involvement in and commitment as Church to the cause of the poor. 32. I expect to have the follow-up of the BISA IV and to gain more experience from our participants of the advance countries. 33. Sharing and solution of people s problems. 34. TO FOLLOW THE STEPS OF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO SANTO DOMINGO AND MEXICO. WESTERN BISHOPS 1. I am looking forward very much to learning something of conditions of life in Third World countries, and to learning how the Church sees her role in these conditions. 2. As much as possible I wish to understand the causes of the problems of the people and their solutions. What can the Conferencia Episcopal Espanola do for BISA? 3. To learn how the Church in Asian countries is integrated into the social-economic and political realities. 4. Knowledge of Pastoral and Social situation in Asia. 5. To discover the Far-East, to come to know the Church in this part of the world and maybe to discover a better way to believe and to pray. 6. Apart from personal benefit (spiritual, knowledge, understanding, concern, sense of collegiality, etc.), I would hope to return with something of value to communicate to the other bishops in my Conference and to my own local Church. 7. I read documentation from the Latin American Bishops meeting in Puebla. I assume that these will have great implications for every part of the world, including Asia. I hope to broaden my own perspective on the Church s role and responsibility in the issues of justice in our time. Because we have extraordinary number of Filipinos in this Diocese, I am interested in the experience of seeing the islands. I hope thus to increase my understanding of the people and their background and be of assistance to the Vicariate for the Filipinos that we have in this Diocese. 8. Gaining a greater awareness of the political, social and religious conditions that exist in the countries of Southeast Asia in a way the Church might better respond to the needs of these people and specially how the American Church might be responsive to our sister churches in that area.
