! 29 November, 2015 Holy Eucharist Cathedral Parish Bulletin HOLY EUCHARIST CATHEDRAL КАФЕДРАЛЬНИЙ СОБОР ПРЕСВЯТОЇ ЕВХАРИСТІЇ 501-4th Avenue, New Westminster, BC V3L 1S2 The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of New Westminster Eparch: Most Rev. Ken Nowakowski І І І Although You died and were buried, the angel yet declared You as Master. He said to the women: Come and see where the Lord was placed; for He is risen as He foretold, because He is almighty. Therefore, we worship You, the only Immortal One, and we beseech You to have mercy on us, O Giver of Life. O Christ, You have abolished the curse of the tree by Your Cross; You have destroyed the power of Death by Your burial, and You enlightened the human race by Your Resurrection. Therefore, we cry out to You: O God and Benefactor, glory to You! Manifestly illumined by the brightness of the Spirit of God, most blessed Paramon, you despised the total darkness of idolatry. When your time had come, most blessed one, you approached the suffering before you with a courageous mind! Revealed as victorious, you cast down the prideful enemy of all mortals, as you magnified Christ! Entreat Him to save and enlighten our souls! Come, let us adore God the Word, Who was born of the Father before all ages, and was incarnate of the Virgin Mary; for of His own free will He suffered the Cross and submitted Himself to burial, and arose from the dead to save me, a sinful one. 3 Vibrant Parish Prayer O Lord Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd, as you once gathered lost sheep that they might hear Your voice and be your flock, so also today graciously look down from heaven upon our parish community, and send down on it your Holy Spirit, that it might be a place to receive the joy of Your Good News. Strengthen us with your presence, and always gather us together in prayer. Grant us the spirit of serving others, so that in our parish all might encounter You, the merciful God. Bless our spiritual leaders with Your wisdom, and inspire us to generously give of our time, talents and treasure for the building up of Your Kingdom. Unite us in peace and harmony, as befits Your community of love. Instill in us a missionary spirit, and let our parish community shine with the light of the Gospel, with prayer and good works, inviting all to share in the divine life, so that Your Name, O Savior, may be praised, together with Your eternal Father, and your most-holy, good and life-giving Spirit. Amen. Troparion, Tone 2: When You went down to death, O Life Immortal,* You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity.* When You raised the dead from the nether world,* all the powers of heaven cried out:* O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory be to You! Glory: Kontakion, Tone 2: You rose from the tomb, O almighty Saviour,* and Hades, seeing this wonder, was stricken with fear; and the dead arose.* Creation saw and rejoices with You, and Adam exults.* And the world, my Saviour, sings Your praises forever. Now: Theotokion, Tone 2: The tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God,* unceasingly in her intercession and an unfailing hope of patronage,* for as the Mother of Life she was transferred to life* by Him Who had dwelt in her ever-virgin womb. Prokimenon, Tone 2: The Lord is my strength and my song of praise,* and He has become my salvation. Verse: The Lord has indeed chastised me, but He has not delivered me to death. Epistle - Eph. 6: A Reading from the Letter of Saint Apostle Paul to Ephesians: Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present

darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Alleluia, Tone 2: Verse: The Lord will hear you in the day of tribulation; the name of the God of Jacob will shield you. Communion Verse: Praise the Lord from the heavens;* praise Him in the highest. Alleluia, alleluia,* alleluia!

STEWARDSHIP OF GOD S GIFTS A WAY OF LIFE Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 KEY POINTS: Christian Stewardship is a way of life and a continuous process of conversion in order to make God a priority in our lives. It requires a spirit of sacrifice and a readiness to share of one s time, talents and treasure. It is nothing new, for the Church has always had to administer its many gifts, sometimes effectively, but sadly, sometimes less so. It is the Gospel in action by concrete individuals, in a concrete place, in a specific time, with those gifts-resources, which God has given us. Let us, therefore, together be good stewards of God s gifts and share them for the building up of His Kingdom. Noah Inspired by Scripture: Genesis 6:5-8; ; 9:16 Romans 23 (author unknown; revision by D. Kostynuik) As time went by, many people lived on the earth. Unfortunately people began to hate each other, point fingers at each other, go to war with each other, and harmed the earth. Again God was sad. Now Noah was a good and just man so God asked Noah to build a big boat, an Arc, and take all of his family and gather food along with all the plants and animals in pairs that were on the earth, and move to the Arc. All the war and the hatred and lack of love made dark clouds grow in the sky and filled the earth with rain. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights. Everyone but Noah and his family died. The Arc sailed like on the sea, and after 40 days and nights, (which is a holy number of days and nights) Noah sent a dove to see of there was any dry land. Finally, one day the dove came back with an olive branch (which is a sign of peace) in its beak letting Noah know that the earth was once again safe to walk on. And when Noah looked out the window of the Arc, he saw a rainbow in the sky, which was the sign God promised, that people would not be destroyed in this way again because God would show them how to live and love one another by sending them Jesus.

Prayer: Gracious God, help us always to turn to you, help us always to be mindful of your love for each of us, so that we can receive your promise of life in Jesus. Abraham and Sarah Inspired by Scripture: Genesis 12:1-7 (author unknown; revision by D. Kostynuik) God spoke to Abraham and asked him to leave his home and his country and God would lead him and Sarah to a new land. God also promised Abraham and Sarah many descendents. Now they were both very old and weren t sure how this would be. One day while Abraham was sitting in the shade of some oak trees, he saw three strangers coming toward the tent where he and Sarah lived. He ran as fast as he could to greet them, offered them water to drink and to wash with because they were very dusty. He asked Sarah to make three portions of bread and asked the manservant to go quickly and prepare a calf for a feast of welcome. While the preparations were being made Abraham talked with three strangers who asked where Sarah was. Because she was in the kitchen of the tent she was not visible but she could hear them talking. Sarah was surprised that they knew her name. And when one of the strangers said that in nine months Sarah would give birth to a son, she giggled because she was so old. Sure enough in nine months Sarah gave birth to Isaac (whose name means may God laugh in delight ), and so began the many generations of followers of the living God, right up to the day Jesus was born and came among us. Prayer: Gracious God, as you came to Sarah and Abraham, you come to us during this season of Philip s Fast, to call us to be your people, who are called to be blessed and to bless others. Come Lord Jesus and open our hearts to your love and the love of your people. Jacob Inspired by Scripture: Genesis 25:19-28; 27:1-29; 28:10-22 (author unknown; revision by D. Kostynuik) Jacob was twin. He and his brother fought a lot. Even with that God let Rebecca the mother know, that both of her sons would be leaders, but of two different countries. Because Jacob tricked his brother out of his birthright, he had to leave home. While he was on his way to his uncles, he stopped and had a cold dinner, then laid down to sleep, using a rock for a pillow. He had a dream and in the dream he saw a ladder reaching up to heaven with angels going up and down on it. And he heard God say to him in the dream: I am the Lord, the God of Abraham and Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to your children and to your children s children. Your descendants will be as many as specks of dust in the ground. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised. When Jacob woke from his sleep he said: Surely God is in this place. Jacob took the stone he used for a pillow, poured oil over it and named this place Bethel. He said if God will be with me, and keep me in this way whenever I go, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone which I have set up for a pillar shall be God s house.

Prayer: Gracious God, Jacob met you face to face in his dream and throughout his journey. During this Advent, as we journey toward You, may we recognize your face in Jesus and in the people who are placed in our path. Moses Scripture: Exodus 32:15-18; 20:1-20 For over 400 years Jacob s family (the Israelites) lived in Egypt and grew in number. The many Pharaohs that ruled the people forgot how long ago Joseph had saved the Egyptians from starvation. The present day Pharaoh was worried that the Israelites were becoming too powerful and ordered that each Israelite boy child be killed. An Israelite woman named Jocabed placed her baby boy into a basket and set it adrift on the river. Miriam, an older child, followed the basket. When Pharaoh s daughter came to bathe, she heard the baby s cry. She asked her attendant to fetch the basket and saw that the boy was the son of an Israelite woman. At that moment Miriam stood up from amongst the reeds and asked, Shall I find a woman to feed the child? The princess agreed and Miriam ran to get her mother. The princess named the baby Moses which meant. I have saved you from the water. Jocabed and Miriam cared for the baby knowing that some day he would have to be raised as an Egyptian. Many years later, the child was called by God to be a great leader. One day God spoke to Moses from a burning bush asking him to go to Pharaoh to ask him to set the Israelites free. When Pharaoh said no, God sent ten plagues to weaken Pharaoh s resistance. After the death of every firstborn Egyptian son, Pharaoh let the Israelites go free. As Moses and the Israelites left, Pharaoh again hardened his heart and with a great army pursued the Israelites. When Moses and the Israelites came to the sea, Moses stretched his hands over the sea and the waters parted. Pharaoh s army drowned as the water fell back on them. Miriam and Moses taught the people to be faithful to Yahweh their God. One day Moses climbed the mountain and God spoke to him giving him the Ten Commandments. The years ahead were difficult for Moses and Miriam for the people were often rebellious but they experienced God s great love and care.

Pope Francis arrives in Africa with a message of peace and environmentalism NAIROBI Pope Francis kicked off his first-ever visit to Africa Wednesday, calling on civil authorities to resist corruption and to protect natural resources, while pressing for greater economic equality in order to stem the recent outburst of terrorist attacks. Experience shows that violence, conflict, and terrorism feed on fear, mistrust, and the despair born of poverty and frustration, Francis said in the wake of attacks that, in addition to the one in Paris, have plagued the Middle East and Africa. But he punctuated his speech to civil authorities with optimism, calling Kenya a young and vibrant nation, a richly diverse society which plays a significant role in the region. Prior to the political upheaval and ethnic violence that plagued the nation in 2007 and early 2008, Kenya was widely considered one of Africa s most compelling success stories. Strategically located in eastern Africa, it experienced an economic boom due to an increase in agricultural production and tourism. While those advantages are still in place, memories of political and ethnic clashes seven years ago that left hundreds of Kenyans dead and hundreds of thousands internally displaced remain near the surface. Like Kenya, [many other African nations] are working to build on the solid foundations of mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation, [for] a multiethnic society which is truly harmonious, just and inclusive, Francis said in Nairobi s State House. Currently, Kenya is led by a fragile coalition between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto, who belong to rival ethnic groups. Both have faced charges at the International Criminal Court for inciting a civil war in 2007, with the case against Kenyatta dismissed while Ruto s is ongoing. At the grassroots, many Kenyans say, people from different ethnic factions get along well, often sharing family events and festivities. During election cycles, however, the country s politicians often build campaigns on tribal differences and foment clashes. Welcoming Francis, Kenyatta said, We ve been divided by our ethnic composition. Yet, he said, even at the heart of conflict there is a desire for human dignity. A self-described Catholic, Kenyatta praised the Church for its role in national life. Francis highlighted one of the issues that has come to define his pontificate, the environment. He lauded Kenya s natural beauty, including it mountains, rivers, lakes, savannahs and semideserts, and underlined the abundance of its natural resources. He called for an ever greater sensibility to the relationship between human beings and nature, to counteract the grave environmental crisis the world is facing. We have a responsibility to pass on the gifts we have received, the pontiff said. Francis is the first pope to dedicate an entire encyclical letter, Laudato Si, to the environment. He s scheduled to address Nairobi s headquarters of the United Nations on Friday, where he s widely expected echo his September pitch he made to the UN General Assembly in New York to protect creation. He said Wednesday there is a clear link between the protection of nature and the building of a just and equitable social order. His comments in Kenya are especially relevant as they come only days before leaders from around the world are scheduled participate in a Paris summit on climate change. Since Kenya s economy is partially rooted in rain-fed agriculture, changes in the rainy season have had a major impact in recent years. According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, rainy seasons across East Africa are beginning later and ending sooner, and the intensity is increasing, resulting in flash floods.

In northeastern Kenya, local experts say people and animals are dying, either as a result of drought during the dry season or floods during the wet season. Francis also had words of praise for local youth, which represent close to 60 percent of the total Kenya population, describing them as the most valuable resource of the country. To protect them, to invest in them and to offer them a helping hand, is the best way we can ensure a future worthy of the wisdom and spiritual values dear to their elders, values which are in the heart and soul of a people, Francis said. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the street to offer an enthusiastic welcome to the pope, some of whom said they look forward to hearing Francis messages about peace and the growing Church in Africa. Charles Besingye, a professor at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, said he found the pope s call for Kenyans to uphold their values to be especially significant. He believes excessive western influence is causing Africans to let go some of its deepest convictions. The value of solidarity is disappearing, he told Crux. What is taking its place is individualism, which is affecting everybody: the youth is running away from their families and communities and closing in on themselves. Basingye also found Francis appeal to build a multiethnic society to be inspiring. In my opinion, the pope is calling us to leave alone the politics of ethnicity to build a government that is not for opportunities or for just one election, but one that s Kenyan, governing all, he said. Bishop Anthony Muheria of the Diocese of Kitiu agreed. We hope his message of peace will come to heal our deep wounds after the tribal violence of 2008, several terrorist attacks in which we lost many lives, and our own social ills, he said. His person and style make it very easy to appreciate the open Gospel of Christ [to which] he witnesses. Towards the end of his opening address, Francis told political, cultural, and economic leaders that they have a special responsibility, a true calling, in service to the Kenyan people. The Gospel tells us that from those to whom much has been given, much will be demanded, the pope said. These words take on special significance in a country that, like so many in Africa, has witnessed chronic corruption. On the eve of Francis arrival, Kenyatta was compelled to sack several members of his cabinet accused of corruption. On Monday, Kenyatta said that corruption is a standing threat to our national security, among other reasons because the bribe accepted by an official can lead to successful terrorist attacks that kill Kenyans. He reiterated these ideas Wednesday as he welcomed the pope. Kenya is the first stop of Pope Francis Nov trip to Africa that will also take him to Uganda and the Central African Republic.

Pope Francis received flowers on his arrival at the airport in Nairobi, Kenya Wednesday, Nov. 25. (AP Photo/Ben Curtis) POPE AND UKRAINIAN LEADERS SYMPATHIZE WITH THE PEOPLE OF FRANCE President Poroshenko and Prime Minister Yatsenyuk extended condolences and support for the people of France in connection with a series of terrorist attacks in Paris. They wrote this in their Twitter accounts. Profoundly shocked by the tragedy in Paris. Terrorism is our common enemy. My solidarity is with the people of France," Poroshenko wrote on Twitter. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk extended his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and injured. France supports Ukraine at this moment as a friend and ally, Yatsenyuk wrote. Pope Francis received with a feeling of anxiety the news about a series of terrorist attacks in Paris, according to Director of the Vatican press office, Father Federico Lombardi. We are shocked by this new manifestation of mad terrorist violence and hatred, which we condemn in the most categorical manner together with the Pope (Francis) and all who love peace. It is an attack on peace for all mankind, which requires a strong response from all of us. As you know, on November 13, as a result of series of explosions and shooting in the French capital dozens of people were killed. LeFigaro reports that the total number of victims of terrorist attacks has reached 150 people. Of these, as reported by the world's leading agencies, about a hundred people were found dead in a concert hall Bataclan, which hosted the concert of the American rock band. More than 200 people have been injured, 80 of them are in critical condition. This was reported by AFP with reference to the sources in the investigation circles.
