Fast, under pain of mortal sin, must be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday Abstinence forbids the eating of meat and meat products for everyone over the age of seven. Everyone aged between 21 and 59 years inclusive is bound to observe the laws of Fast. On the days of Fast only one full meal is allowed, supplemented by two small collations (which combined should not equal the full meal) as required to maintain strength and according to one s needs. The full meal may include meat except on days of Abstinence. Eating between meals is not permitted but liquids including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected the law does not oblige. Traditional Days of Fast and Abstinence Abstinence alone on all Fridays of the year unless a Holy Day of Obligation falls on Friday. Fast alone on all days in Lent, Ember Wednesday and Ember Saturday Fasting and Abstinence on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent and Ember Fridays. Fasting or penance during Advent is a more ancient tradition, but is highly recommended to prepare oneself for the anniversary of the birth of Our Lord and Redeemer. The Church s Present Holy Days of Obligation All Sundays in the year The Ascension of Our Lord (solemnised the following Sunday) The Assumption of Our Lady 15 August Christmas Day 25 December On these days, every Catholic is obliged, under pain of mortal sin, to hear Mass. Since Our Lord suffered death in order to institute Holy Mass, it requires a very serious inconvenience such as sickness or notable damage to one s health or property, to excuse one from this obligation.
