GATHERING IN GOD S NAME As the entrance bell is rung, please stand to sing the hymn 1 Praise with joy the world s Creator, God of justice, love and peace, source and end of human knowledge, force of greatness without cease. Celebrate the Maker s glory, power to rescue and release. INTROIT HYMN 3 Praise the Spirit sent among us, liberating truth from pride, forging bonds where race or gender, age or nation dare divide. Celebrate the Spirit s treasure foolishness none dare deride. 2 Praise the Son who feeds the hungry, frees the captive, finds the lost, heals the sick, upsets religion, fearless both of fate and cost. Celebrate Christ s constant presence Friend and Stranger, Guest and Host. 4 Praise the Maker, Son and Spirit, one God in community, calling Christians to embody oneness and diversity. Thus the world shall yet believe, when shown Christ s vibrant unity. The presiding priest greets all in the name of the Lord In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. John L Bell (1949-) & Graham Maule (1958-) TiS 179 Tune: Praise my soul (A&M NS 192) Father Richard welcomes & commissions Mother Roxanne Addley as our Assistant Curate The deacon says Let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie eleison is sung Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. 3
The deacon says Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The presiding priest says the Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in Excelsis is sung Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us, thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. 4
The presiding priest says the Collect of the Day Let us pray. Saving God, whose Son, Jesus Christ, healed the sick and brought them wholeness of body and mind: inspire us, his disciples, so that we may constantly proclaim his gospel by our words and by the dedication and integrity of our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. [sit] THE LITURGY OF THE WORD A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. 40:21-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 5
PSALM 147 Please repeat response after the choir, then sing as indicated 1 God unites his scattered people, gathers those who wandered far, heals the hurt and broken spirits, tending every wound and scar. 2 Such is God s great power and wisdom none can calculate or tell; keen is God to ground the wicked and with humble folk to dwell. 3 God, with clouds, the sky has curtained thus ensuring rain shall fall; earth, responding, grows to order food for creatures great and small. 4 God s discernment never favours strength or speed to lift or move; God delights in those who fear him, trusting in his steadfast love. R R R R Paraphrase by John L Bell (b 1949) Words and music from Psalms of Patience, Protest and Praise by permission Wild Goose Publications Together in Song 92 6
A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. 9:16-23 If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God s law but am under Christ s law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION & READING [stand] Please repeat after the choir, then sing as indicated The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe in the good news. Alleluia. Please turn to face the proclamation of the Gospel The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark. 1:29-39 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. As soon as Jesus and his disciples left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. 7
That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Sunday School Gathering Prayer Miss Kim Sermon Father Richard A time for quiet reflection follows the sermon The Nicene Creed is said, introduced by the deacon Let us together affirm the faith of the Church: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. 8 [stand]
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The deacon introduces the prayers THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL Let us pray for the world and for the Church. After each prayer in your mercy, hear our prayer. The presiding priest says After last prayer Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [please kneel or sit] The presiding priest says We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. THE GREETING OF PEACE The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 9 [stand] You are invited to exchange a sign of peace with those around you During the Offertory hymn, a collection is taken up and donations of food for the St Laurence Emergency Food Ministry are brought to the altar with the bread & wine OFFERTORY HYMN 1 Lord God, your love has called us here, as we, by love, for love were made. Your living likeness still we bear, though marred, dishonoured, disobeyed. We come, with all our heart and mind your call to hear, your love to find.
2 We come with self-inflicted pains of broken trust and chosen wrong, half-free, half-bound by inner chains, by social forces swept along, by powers and systems close confined, yet seeking hope for humankind. 3 Lord God, in Christ you call our name, and then receive us as your own, not through some merit, right or claim, but by your gracious love alone. We strain to glimpse your mercy-seat, and find you kneeling at our feet. 4 Then take the towel, and break the bread, and humble us, and call us friends. Suffer and serve till all are fed, and show how grandly love intends to work till all creation sings, to fill all worlds, to crown all things. 5 Lord God, in Christ you set us free your life to live, your joy to share. Give us your Spirit s liberty to turn from guilt and dull despair and offer all that faith can do, while love is making all things new. Brian A. Wren (b. 1936) Tune: Melita (A&M NS 292) THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The presiding priest begins the Eucharistic Prayer The priest prays the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer, concluding with for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The priest continues the Eucharistic Prayer; the deacon says Great is the mystery of faith 10
The priest continues the Eucharistic Prayer, concluding with in songs of never-ending praise: The deacon introduces the Lord s Prayer, saying As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND COMMUNION The presiding priest breaks the bread and says We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei is sung O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace. The presiding priest says Behold, Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. The gifts of God for the people of God. 11 [kneel or sit]
Communicant members of all churches are welcome to receive Communion. If you would prefer a blessing, indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest. Please feel free to stand or kneel at the sanctuary step. Gluten-free altar breads are available, please tell the priest if you require one. COMMUNION MOTET If ye love me Peter Aston THE SENDING OUT OF GOD S PEOPLE Announcements are made after Communion DISMISSAL HYMN [stand] 1 Now let us from this table rise renewed in body, mind and soul; with Christ we die and live again, his selfless love has made us whole. 2 With minds alert, upheld by grace, to spread the Word in speech and deed, we follow in the steps of Christ, at one with all in hope and need. 3 To fill each human house with love, it is the sacrament of care; the work that Christ began to do we humbly pledge ourselves to share. 4 Then give us grace, Companion God, to choose again the pilgrim way, and help us to accept with joy the challenge of tomorrow s day. Frederick Herman Kaan ( ) TiS 530 Tune: Solothurn (A&M NS 403) The presiding priest says the Post-Communion Prayer and Blessing The deacon says Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Organ Postlude Alla Marcia in C Thomas Adams You are invited for morning tea at the Old Vicarage Parish Centre Please take this pew sheet home with you and refer to the notices and prayer intentions 12
Explorations Study Group Explorations returns this Wednesday, 7 th of February in the Old Vicarage. All are welcome. Explorations is a Bible study group that meets each Wednesday at following the 10am Eucharist. The group is composed of people who come from diverse backgrounds, ages, and countries. They have one thing in common; a love of our Lord Jesus Christ. That love extends to a desire to acquaint themselves better with what the Bible tells us about God and ourselves. In studying the Bible we review the scripture readings that are set down for the Sunday following. In reflecting upon them we explore how the scriptures may impact upon us today, what its message may have been for the hearers of the day, and how the language of the day may give us greater insight of it s meaning for us today. An invitation extends to all who would like to gain a more appreciative understanding of the Bible, as it reveals its truths to us today, among an open and friendly group of people. If you are able to spare a Wednesday morning with us, you may be assured of a friendly welcome. Explorations resumes Wednesday 7 February 2018 in the Old Vicarage at 10.45am Choral Evensong resumes with the Launch of ABM s Lent Appeal 18 February, 6pm The service will be followed by supper in the Old Vicarage Parish Centre 13
