2 The church building is a sign and reminder of the immanence and transcendence of God who chose to dwell among us and whose presence cannot be contained or limited to any single place. Churches are signs of the pilgrim church on earth; they are images that proclaim the heavenly Jerusalem. (Built of Living Stones, no. 50) The dedication of a church is a significant and rare event in the life of a Christian community. It involves more than merely setting aside a building for the celebration of sacred things, since the people who plan, build, and dedicate a sacred place are themselves the Church, that is, the temple of God built of living stones, where the Father is worshiped in spirit and in truth. Rightly, then, from early times the name church has also been given to the building in which the Christian community gathers to hear the Word of God, to pray together, to celebrate the Sacraments, and to participate in the Eucharist. (Rite for the Dedication of a Church and an Altar, chapter 2, no. 1) This building is both the house of God on earth (domus Dei) and a house fit for the prayers of the saints (domus ecclesiae). (Built of Living Stones, no. 16) The Eucharist is at the heart of the Rite of Dedication of a Church and an Altar in the same way that the Eucharist is central to the life of the Church, the Body of Christ. Just as a Christian becomes the temple of God, receiving in succession the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, so too a building becomes a house of God and the Church with ablutions (Baptism) and anointing with Sacred Chrism (Confirmation), before entering into the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving and Praise (Eucharist). The rite reminds us of fundamental realities of discipleship: We are a pilgrim Church, led by the Cross of Christ in procession to the altar of the Lord. We journey as a community with the saints who have come before us not simply as individuals. We are formed by the Word of God in the Holy Spirit and led beyond ourselves to walk in holiness and truth, to live the Commandments and Beatitudes, and to work for justice, peace, and the Kingdom of God. 3

24 GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION FOR CATHOLICS As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. FOR OUR FELLOW CHRISTIANS We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ s prayer for us that they may all be one (John 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of Faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are not ordinarily admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharist sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 3). FOR NON-CHRISTIANS We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family. FOR THOSE NOT RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. Touch our hearts with true generosity to raise up a house of God for the inspiration and renewal of all your faithful. May the God who bestows great gifts on us continue to bless us and nourish us in the days ahead. May our work always reflect God s glory. May our lives always reflect God s mercy.
