1 St. Martin de Porres, O.P. ( ) St. Rose of Lima, O.P. ( ) First saint of African descent of the Americas; canonized May Born in Lima, Peru of a Spanish nobleman and a black former slave, and despised by his father for his dark color. Practiced uncommon charity and humility; endowed by God with the gifts of bi-location and miraculous healing. First canonized saint of the Americas (1671). Suffered many penances in atonement for the sins of the world. It is big enough for Jesus and myself, she told her protesting mother, with regard to the little hermitage she built in the garden where she lived out her life in prayer, penance and service after becoming a Third Order Dominican.
