1 The Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, :00 a.m. Seasonal Liturgical Rotation for Easter Please turn off your cell phones. Page numbers refer to The Book of Common Prayer (red). Hymn numbers refer to The Hymnal 1982 (blue). Our white, red, and gold Easter vestments and paraments are used. Our usual silver communion vessels and alms basins are once again used. The Paschal Candle is in full view throughout Easter season. The service begins with the Easter Acclamation. The Gloria in excelsis and Te Deum and the use of alleluia have returned to normal usage. We use no Confession with the Prayers of the People. We use a Doxology setting full of alleluias. We use Eucharistic Prayer D and remain standing throughout the prayer. The Fraction Anthem is an Easter setting of Christ Our Passover, full of alleluias. The Dismissal includes alleluia, alleluia both from the Deacon and the congregation. We process out on the final hymn, and a Postlude concludes the service.

Amen. The congregation is seated. Lesson Acts 8:26-40 An angel of the Lord said to Philip, Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go over to this chariot and join it. So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, Do you understand what you are reading? He replied, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else? Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized? He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea. Reader The Word of the Lord. 4 Gospel John 15:1-8 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said to his disciples, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 4

5 Prayers of the People From The Washington National Cathedral Rejoicing in the resurrection of Christ, let us remember in prayer the Church, the world, and all those in need saying, For Christ is risen. For the whole bright earth, so lovingly created and compassionately redeemed, that it may speak of the glory and majesty of God. For Christ is risen. For the Church, whose life is hid with Christ in God, that in all its diversity, witness may be made to one Lord, one faith, one baptism. For Christ is risen. For those who govern and hold authority in the nations, that they may be led to govern with equity and justice, bringing life to those in the shadow of death. For Christ is risen. For all who suffer in mind, body, or soul, for whom Christ is risen, that they may be healed and comforted. For Christ is risen. For all who have died, and for all who grieve, that in Christ who triumphs over death, they may find light perpetual and blessed assurance. For Christ is risen. The Celebrant says Joining our voices with the faithful in every time and place, we offer our prayers to you, O God, rejoicing in the presence of the risen Lord, your son our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. Easter is more than a Sunday. It is actually a seven-week season of the church year, the Great Fifty Days that begin at sundown the evening before Easter Day (when we celebrate the Great Vigil of Easter) and lasts for six more Sundays until the Day of Pentecost. These weeks of celebration will be dramatically different from the solemnity of Lent. Because Easter focuses on our new life in Christ, our liturgy reflects this joy. We stand for prayer throughout the service, and we omit the General Confession that normally follows the Prayers of the People. Of course, personal confession to God is always appropriate and may be made before our worship begins. The Peace Celebrant People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 7 At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: Sanctus and Benedictus Richard Proulx The congregation remains standing, and the Celebrant continues And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. 7

8 Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our holy and righteous forebears, redeemer and mother of Israel, God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. Behold who you are; become what you receive. Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar or to the chapel altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, please either go to 8

9 the chapel or inform an usher that communion needs to be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive.
