3 TO ALL OUR VISITORS To all our Visitors On behalf of the monastic Community, it gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you as we gather here at Ampleforth Abbey to celebrate the Easter Triduum. We come together at the end of an intense forty day period which has provided us with the opportunity to focus on the heart of the Christian vocation and mission conversion to Jesus Christ and the deepening of our friendship with him (George Weigel, Roman Pilgrimage). The need for conversion is an acknowledgment of our sinfulness for, as Pope Francis has said, we are sinners standing under Jesus gaze of merciful tenderness. At Easter, then, we celebrate our total redemption through the blood of Christ, for by his wounds we have been healed. May our joyful celebration of the Easter Triduum be a time when we not only experience the tenderness of the Risen Christ but also deepen our faith in him. Rt Rev Cuthbert Madden OSB, Abbot of Ampleforth

7 Fr Mark So Far and So Near Fr Mark has been working for some 30 years as a member of the International Team of Alliance for International Monasticism (AIM). This is an organisation belonging to the Benedictine Confederation and the Cistercian Orders. Its purpose is to promote networking between monastic communities of men and women following the Rule of St Benedict throughout the world and especially in the poorer and developing countries of Latin America, Asia, and Africa. It also provides help in various forms for young foundations in these latter countries with whom Fr Mark has been working closely especially in Africa and Asia. He will introduce the film So far and so near in its English version, made two years ago for French Catholic Television and presenting the work of AIM and the life of four communities in different parts of the world. Ian Foxley, Paul Moore & Fr Terence "The Truth will set you free - the parable of the two whistleblowers" Ian Foxley blew the whistle on corruption on defence contracts in Saudia Arabia. 9 General Information Newcomers Welcome For those attending the Triduum Retreat for the first time, there will be a short introductory talk in the Big Study, off the Main Hall on Holy Thursday at 5.30pm. Dining Arrangements Meals are served in the ground floor and first floor refectories of the Upper Building. If you have been allocated the Lower Guest Refectory for your meals we would be grateful if you would use this venue throughout the Triduum. Guests are asked to observe silence during Good Friday lunch and families with young children are encouraged to use the first floor of the upper refectories. Please respect the one way traffic in the Upper Building signs are there for your safety, especially for children who need to take great care in all areas where hot food is being served. Children should always be accompanied by a parent or another adult. Any guest who has alerted us to a food allergy or a special diet is asked to make themselves known to the Catering Supervisor. Collections at Mass The Collection taken on Holy Thursday will be shared between CAFOD and The Saint Giles Trust for Children. Founded in 1979, the purpose of the St Giles Trust is to run holidays for children with special needs. They are a self-financing voluntary group and their aim is to provide excellent one-to-one care for the children on their holidays, as well as giving a well-earned rest to those who care for them. In the early years of the Trust, holidays were held in a variety of locations but in more recent years they have always been based with us here at Ampleforth. Singing You are encouraged to join in the singing in the Abbey Church but when joining in, please listen carefully and allow yourself to be led by the Monastic Community. Other Information Maps and further information are available on the notice boards in the Main Hall. If you require any assistance during your stay, please contact the Retreat Co-ordinator, Fr. Christopher, in the first instance or ask our Hospitality team when the office is open. First Aid If you have an accident, require first aid or witness a near miss please report to the hospitality office. Further information on Doctors and Emergency Medical Care is available on page 17. Easter Triduum
10 Children's and Teenagers' Programmes The children s and teenagers programmes are led by the Community of Saint Aelred. The Community of Saint Aelred is a lay Catholic community. Its members seek to deepen their life as Christians based on four founding principles: to grow into the gift of Baptism, to be formed in the spirit of St. Benedict, to make lectio divina the beginning and heart of all they do and to pray the Divine Office, the prayer of the Church. They are inspired by the Manquehue Apostolic Movement and supported by the friendship of the English Benedictine Congregation. If you would like to know more, please contact Dominic Carter at dominiccarter@btinternet.com. Children's Programme (4-11 year olds) This year s activities will focus on the Way of the Cross, and will involve prayer, responding to scripture, song and drama. For most activities the children will be divided into two age groups the precise ages in each will depend on the age range of those attending. The groups will be based in the Lower and Upper Chaplaincies and in a classroom next to the Lower Chaplaincy. Teenagers Programme (12-16 year olds) The aim of the teenagers programme is to give the teenagers a fun and engaging experience of the Retreat, and to help them enter into the spirit of the Triduum. This year we will be led by a group of university students, recent leavers from Ampleforth College. All the activities will be in Alban Roe House, where there is a games room and a kitchen. They will join the other retreatants for meals and for part of the main liturgies. Please note the colour coding for the Children s and Teenagers Programme. 7 Ampleforth Abbey

12 Holy Thursday We begin our celebration of the Triduum by celebrating together the Mass of the Lord s Supper. The reading from the Book of Exodus which describes the Jewish Passover ritual helps us to understand the actions of Christ at the Last Supper, whilst St. Paul reminds us that the meal is connected with the cross and is therefore a sacrificial meal and the sign of the new covenant. The Gospel from John points to the motivation of Jesus love and service. After the Last Supper, Jesus offers his priestly prayer to the Father begging that his followers may be united. Lastly on this day, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays: Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you (John 17: 1) pm Tea in the Upper Building 5.30 pm Newcomers welcome in the Big Study 5.30 pm University Students' welcome in the Alcuin Room 6.15 pm Supper in the Upper Building (self-service) pm Registration and introduction 7.15 pm Introduction, games and preparation for the Mass of the Lord s Supper 7.30 pm Conference in the Big Study pm Closed Confessions in the South Transept 8.15 pm Singing practice in the Abbey Church 8.30 pm Solemn Mass followed by the Watching at the Altar of Repose in the Crypt 9.15 pm Join Solemn Mass in the Abbey Church pm The Gospel of the Arrest brings the Watching to an end Please note the colour coding for the Children s and Teenagers Programme. 16 Holy Saturday We gather at night for our Easter Vigil so that we can more easily experience the contrast between darkness and light, between death and resurrection. In the early Church, this was known as the Great Night which celebrated the Resurrection of our Saviour Jesus Christ. The words of the Preface of Easter act as a fitting summary and lead us towards the climax of our celebration of the reception of the Body and Blood of the Risen Lord: Father we praise you with greater joy than ever, on this Easter night when Christ became our paschal sacrifice. He is the true lamb who took away the sins of the world. By dying He destroyed our death; by rising He restored our life am Matins am Breakfast in the Upper Building (self-service) am Lauds 9.30 am Start of morning activities pm Morning session am Conference in the Big Study am Coffee in the Main Hall am Supplementary talks pm Midday Office and singing practice 1.00 pm Formal end of programme: prizes 1.20 pm Lunch in the Upper Building (self-service) 2.30 pm Recital given by the Arcadian Singers in Big Study 4.00 pm Tea in the Main Hall 4.00 pm Oblates Meeting, Fr Abbot's Meeting Room 5.30 pm Conference in the Big Study pm Silence in the Abbey Church and closed Confessions in the South Transept pm Team games, prayer and song 6.30 pm Vespers 7.00 pm Supper in the Upper Building (self-service) pm Silence in the Abbey Church and closed Confessions in the South Transept 9.45 pm Teenagers to gather together for start of Vigil in Main Hall 9.45 pm Assemble in the Main Hall for beginning of the Vigil pm Easter Vigil with Lauds 13 Ampleforth Abbey
17 This is the night That even now, throughout the world, sets Christian believers apart from worldly vices and from the gloom of sin, leading them to grace and joining them to his holy ones. This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death and rose victorious from the underworld. Our birth would have been no gain, Had we not been redeemed. O wonder of your humble care for us! O love, O Charity beyond all telling, to ransom a slave you gave away your Son! O truly blessed night, Worthy alone to know the time and hour when Christ rose from the underworld! This is the night of which it is written: the night shall be as bright as day, dazzling is the night for me, and full of gladness From the Exsultet, The Easter Proclamation Easter Triduum
