3 BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever. Amen. SERVICE NOTES FOR THE FESTIVAL OF PENTECOST The Festival of Pentecost marks the close of the Easter Season. The word pentecost (literally means "50") was the Greek name for the Jewish Festival of Weeks which happened 50 days after the Passover. The Pentecost we celebrate today was the one that happened 50 days after Jesus died and rose again. On Pentecost, the ascended Lord Jesus fulfilled his promise to baptize his disciples with the Holy Spirit. FOR THE CHILDREN A Staffed Nursery is available for your use at any time during the service. It is located in Rooms 1 and 2. A Cry-Room is available if your little ones need a moment. It is located near the balcony stairs at the back of the sanctuary. A speaker and window let you see and hear the service. Children s Activity Sheets give activities and lessons pertaining to the Scripture lessons for the day. Ask an usher at the door into the sanctuary. 3

C(ongregation): And also with you. CONFESSION OF SINS L: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy. C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. L: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will. C: Amen. Congregation: Refrain PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. The leader says the Prayer of the Day. C: Amen. 1 This hymn was written by Venatius Fortunatus in 575 AD. This has been sung by the Christian Church at the beginning of Pentecost services for nearly 1500 years. 6

7 THE WORD OF GOD CHILDREN S SERMON FIRST LESSON: EZEKIEL 37: The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" I said, "O Sovereign LORD, you alone know." 4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.' " 7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.' " 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet a vast army. 11 Then he said to me: "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.' 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.' " 7

10 SECOND LESSON: ACTS 2: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine." 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.' 10

11 VERSE OF THE DAY Cantor: Refrain All: Refrain Cantor: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. All: Refrain GOSPEL: JOHN 14: "All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. HYMN OF THE DAY: #177, Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest The choir will sing verses 1-4. The congregation is invited to join in singing verses 5-6. Written in 900 AD, this Latin hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus has been praised as the greatest Latin hymn ever composed next to the Te Deum Laudamus. It is most often ascribed to Rhabanus Maurus, Archbishop of Mainz. The earliest use of the hymn was at Vespers during the week of Pentecost and it came to be used at Terce (9 a.m., the hour that the apostles received the Holy Spirit) in the late tenth century. The singing of this hymn in medieval services was apparently done with great dignity, accompanied by the use of incense, lights, bells, and rich vestments. 11

12 SERMON HYMN: Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled Cantors sing the verses, congregation sings the refrain In God s house there are many places for you alone to dwell in safety. You know the way to where I ll lead you, if you are lost, I will show the way. Refrain I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; only through me can you know what I know. If you knew me, you would see the vision, if you see me, you see your God. Refrain The words I speak are not only of myself, it is your God who lives within me. If you believe that your God and I are one, I will provide when you call my name. Refrain 12

13 THANKSGIVING OFFERING The members of Faith Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord's work in this community and around the world. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. LORD S BLESSING L: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness. C: Amen. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. CLOSING HYMN: #571, From Greenland s Icy Mountains 2 2 This amazingly popular hymn was composed in twenty minutes for a special Pentecost service in 1819 at Wrexham, England. The author, Reginal Heber, was urged by the vicar of Wrexham to write something for the morning's service. Since the vicar was also his father-in-law, Heber agreed, and composed this Pentecost hymn that has lasted for generations." 13

14 Announcements Early Service: Every Sunday at 8:00am. In an effort to serve our expanding congregation, two services will be held each Sunday morning. We hope that this additional worship opportunity can be used by many people! The schedule is: 8:00am Worship 9:15am Sunday School and Bible study 10:30am Worship A New FaithBuilders Class begins June 3th: Our FaithBuilders class is for people interested in becoming members of Faith, or for people just looking to build their faith through the study of the basic teachings of the Bible. Classes are held on Sunday at 9:15am and the same topic is repeated on Tuesdays at 7:00pm. If you would like to attend, contact Pastor Schroeder. Childcare is available. Everyone is welcome! Moms, looking for some family friendly fun? Please consider bringing your children and joining us at Faith Lutheran church on Tuesday, June 12th at 10:00 AM. The children will play outside and then we will all eat lunch together. Please bring a sack lunch for you and your children. This year s theme is God So Loved the World. The camp is open to all children who will be in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade starting in the fall, and the cost is $50 per camper. Soccer Camp Coaches/Assistants: We are looking for adult soccer coaches assistants for our Soccer Camp on June 18 th - June 21 st. Those who volunteer will receive free registration for their children in the camp. We're planning on having 150 kids in this year's camp, so lots of help is needed! Snacks: We are looking for donations of pretzels, cheese crackers, goldfish crackers, granola/cereal-type bars and freeze pops.
