4 Preface This ne, revised 2018 edition of the Solo Instrument Book contains all available instrument parts ritten for hymns, songs, psalms and service music in Today s Missal, Music Issue, and Breaking Bread In order to facilitate the use of this accompaniment ith the OCP missal program, please note the folloing: CCOMPNIMENT NUMBERS: With this revision, the accompaniment numbers have been updated, but are still referenced at the top of each song in Today s Missal, Music Issue, and Breaking Bread as cc This accompaniment number ill not change during the life of this revision ( ), and is completely separate from the song number in the missal (hich may change from year to year) The accompaniment number ill be the same number in all three accompaniment books (Keyboard, uitar, and Solo Instrument) to better accommodate ensemble playing BOOK ORNIZTION: The organization of this book is similar to the last revision, as shon in the Table of Contents (see preceding page) ll hymns and songs are sequenced by title in strict alphabetical order Subsequent sections of this book reflect the order in hich they occur in Music Issue: Psalms and Canticles (psalm number order), Rites (liturgical order), Mass Settings (alphabetical order by Mass title, then liturgical order ithin), dditional Service Music (liturgical order), Ne Music (beginning liturgical year 2018) and Indexes NOTE ON INSTRUMENTTION DESINTIONS: Many songs in this volume are ritten for a specific instrument such as violin, flute, or Bb trumpet Some parts are marked for a generic Solo Instrument in C (or Bb ) In either case, these designations indicate that the parts are meant to be played by a single performer Some songs may have multiple parts labeled by Roman numerals (ex I, II), hich indicate one instrumentalist per melodic voice Other instrument parts, hoever, are ritten in a more flexible to- or three-stave format and are marked Solo Instrument(s) in C (or Bb ) note the s in parentheses These parts alays have the melody on the top staff ith chord symbols (for those instrumentalists ho improvise) There are also one or to harmony (or obbligato) lines that can ork by themselves or together Unlike the instrument parts described above, in hich each part is meant to be played by one person, the more flexible format allos an instrumentalist (or multiple instrumentalists) to choose hich line to play (or improvise around), knoing that all lines ill ork together CHORD SYMBOLS ND INTRO BRCKETS: Chord symbols in the Keyboard ccompaniment Book continue to match the chord symbols in the uitar ccompaniment Book so the to instruments can be played together on all hymns and songs Since most traditional hymns ere not originally intended for the guitar, the chord symbols have been adjusted in varying degrees from the actual keyboard harmony These chord symbols are not intended to be a harmonic realization of the keyboard part, but rather to match a progression that is practical and playable on the guitar footnote directing the keyboardist to play from the chord symbols hen in ensemble ith the guitar is given on each of these hymns When needed, separate solo instrument parts have been provided to be used ith either the ritten keyboard accompaniment or the chords in the guitar edition Introduction brackets are often present for suggested introductions to each song Dashed brackets indicate here to sections of music join to provide an Introduction INDEX FORMT: The indexes that are integral for this book ( cknoledgments, Index of Instruments, and Index of Titles ) are located in the back Those indexes hich are most helpful for liturgy planning can be found in the Master Index It may be donloaded in PDF format at ocporg/master-index The Master Index includes the folloing indexes: Supplemental Sources, Text and Music Sources, Language, Musical Style, Metrical and lphabetical Hymn Tunes, Scriptural, Topical, Suggested Psalms for the Liturgical Year, and Liturgical
