What persecutions I endured; yet from them all, the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

THE GOSPEL The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:10-14) The Lord spoke this parable: Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to Heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner! 5 ANNOUNCEMENTS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1 ST : THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple will be celebrated this Thursday, February 1, at 6:30 pm. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3 rd : TEEN SOYO BEACH-BICYCLING TRIP This coming Saturday, February 3 rd, 11 AM 2 (or 3) PM, our parishioner Danny Nofal will host the St Nicholas Teen SOYO Group to ride bicycles along the beach paths in beautiful Marina del Ray. Parents, please have the liability form signed before the event we cannot let any minor on a bike without the form. SUNDAY FEBRUARY 4 th : BOYS PRESENTATION TO THE LORD After Liturgy next Sunday there will be a special blessing for all the young men in our parish following the English and Arabic Liturgies. SUNDAY FEBRUARY 11, 2018 ANNUAL MEETING St. Nicholas Cathedral Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday February 11, Please note, there will be one Liturgy at 10:30 AM. Nominations for Parish Council members will be finalized for this meeting. The annual financial report will also be presented at this meeting. Elections for new Parish members will be on February 18 & February 25, Please plan ahead to join us. MARCH 9-11: SUNDAY SCHOOL RETREAT AT CAMP ST NICHOLAS Save the date: Join us for an enjoyable family weekend at Camp St. Nicholas in Frazier Park from Friday March 9 to Sunday March 11. Only registrants with valid tickets are allowed to check in. Please purchase your tickets at Ministry Spotlight The Men's Fellowship ministry fosters spiritual and physical well-being and unity of its members. The leadership coordinates religious work and activities in promoting the work of the Cathedral and provides a social organization based on a commonality of life view. It hosts several men s retreats; dinner meetings with guest speakers; and supports the Cathedral in all spiritual activities such as the Welcoming Committee and serving during the Holy Week services. 6 SYMBOLS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT There are, at least, six clear symbols for The Holy Spirit in the Bible which are: 1. The Dove: In the Epiphany, the scene of the baptism of Christ, it is written that the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him. (Matt. 3:16, Luke 3:22 & John 1:33). The dove refers to peace, purity, tranquility and meekness. 2. The Fire: (a picture of fire) In the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles in the form of divided tongues as of fire and sat upon each of them (Acts 2:3). The fire stands for the Divine nature of the Holy Spirit, the third Person in the Holy Trinity. He is Holy and the giver of holiness. The fire consumes the germs of sin in us. It purifies, brings light, warmth and fervency in love, prayer, zeal and service. 3. The Water: Jesus said, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will Flow Rivers of living water. He spoke concerning the Spirit for the Holy Spirit was not yet given (John 7:37, 38). As the water washes and cleans, so the Holy Spirit does, and it is written that, God has saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit ) Titus 3:5). The water also quenches the thirst of the body, but the Holy Spirit gives us comfort and satisfaction. For as the rain comes down from heaven and water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, so the Holy Spirit gives us His nine blessed fruits mentioned in (Galatians 5:22, 23) which are, Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. 4. The Wind: At Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit was accompanied with a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind... (Acts2:2). The winds are mighty as in a tornado or a hurricane; it drives the ships and the clouds. It is written, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of Hosts (Zech.4:6). 5. The Oil: The Oil stands for sanctification, consecration, dedication, ordination, healing, lighting and illumination. All these are the works of the Holy Spirit and much more. Kings, priests and prophets were usually ordained and anointed with holy oil. The priest anoints the person who is baptized with the Holy Myroun oil in all his senses, body members, joints and limbs, for sanctification, confirmation and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon him/her. This Myroun oil anointment replaced the laying of the hands of the apostles which we read of in Acts 8:17, Then they (Peter and John) laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Also oil was used in healing in the sacrament of unction of the sick, Is anyone among you sick, let him call the priests of the church, and let them pray over him anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord and the Lord will raise him up (James 5:14). We also read that the Apostles anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them (Mark 6:13). 6. The Seal: St. Paul writes to the Ephesians saying, Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption (eph.4:30). The Seal means that we have become God s brand and possession; we belong to the Lord Jesus Christ who bought us with His precious blood. The Good Shepherd stamps His flock with this Holy Seal of the Holy Spirit. The Seal also stands for authority of the king or the government. Elen Saleh
