THE CELEBRATION OF A NEW MINISTRY The Institution of The Reverend F. M. Buddy Stallings as the Twelfth Rector of Saint Bartholomew s Church in the City of New York Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 7 pm Welcome to Saint Bartholomew s Church on this significant and joyful occasion. Your presence and participation in this service are gifts to Buddy and to the entire congregation of St. Bart s. We gather today with grateful hearts to formally recognize and celebrate Buddy s election as Rector of Saint Bartholomew s Church. At the same time, we acknowledge and celebrate the gifts, responsibilities and ministries shared by the people of St. Bart s, their Rector and their Bishop in this place. Our celebration embraces the entire community of St. Bart s, of this city of New York and beyond and offers this fresh beginning to God. We are thankful for your presence tonight and for your prayers as we embark on this next chapter in the history and ministry of St. Bart s. WELCOME!

THE INSTITUTION Wardens Bishop Dietsche, we have come together today to welcome Floyd Monroe Buddy Stallings, who has been chosen to serve as Rector of St. Bartholomew s Church. We believe that he is well qualified, and that he has been prayerfully and lawfully selected. Bishop Buddy, do you, in the presence of this congregation, commit yourself to this trust and responsibility? Buddy I do. Bishop Will you who witness this new beginning support and uphold Buddy in this ministry? People We will. Bishop Let us then offer our prayers to God for all his people, for this congregation, and for Buddy their Rector. THE LITANY For the holy Church of God, that it may be filled with truth and love, and be found without fault at the day of your coming, we pray to you, O Lord. For all members of your Church in their vocation and ministry, that they may serve you in a true and godly life, we pray to you, O Lord. For Katharine, our Presiding Bishop, for Andrew our Bishop, and for all bishops, priests, and deacons, that they may be filled with your love, may hunger for truth, and may thirst after righteousness, we pray to you, O Lord. For Buddy, chosen Rector in your Church, we pray to you, O Lord. That he may faithfully fulfill the duties of this ministry, build up your Church, and glorify your Name, we pray to you, O Lord. That by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit he may be sustained and encouraged to persevere to the end, we pray to you, O Lord.

For his family, that they may be adorned with all Christian virtues, we pray to you, O Lord. For all who fear God and believe in you, Lord Christ, that our divisions may cease and that all may be one as you and the Father are one, we pray to you, O Lord. For the mission of the Church, that in faithful witness it may preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, we pray to you, O Lord. For the peace of the world, that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord. For those in positions of public trust, that they may serve justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person, we pray to you, O Lord. For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you, O Lord. For all who have died in the communion of your Church, and those whose faith is known to you alone, that, with all the saints, they may have rest in that place where there is no pain or grief, but life eternal, we pray to you, O Lord. Rejoicing in the fellowship of all the saints, let us commend ourselves, Everliving God, strengthen and sustain Buddy, that with patience and understanding he may love and care for your people; and grant that together they may follow Jesus Christ, offering to you their gifts and talents; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lesson Romans 12:1 18 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual

affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Hymn All my hope on God is founded Michael Words: Robert Seymour Bridges ( ), alt., after Joachim Neander ( ). Music: Michael, Herbert Howells ( ). All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A The Holy Gospel Mark 9:33 37 At the Announcement, all say Glory to you, Lord Christ. Then Jesus and the disciples came to Capernaum; and when Jesus was in the house he asked them, What were you arguing about on the way? But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me. Reader The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton

THE INDUCTION Representatives of the congregation and of the clergy of the diocese stand before the Bishop with the new Rector, presenting gifts for Buddy s ministry. Clergy of St. Bartholomew s Church present a stole and a tippet, saying Buddy, receive this stole and this tippet, and be among us as a pastor and priest. Lay Ministers and Youth Acolytes present The Book of Common Prayer and a youth prayer book, saying Buddy, receive these books, and be among us as a person of prayer. The Prayer Team presents olive oil, saying Buddy, use this oil, and be among us as a healer and reconciler. The Wardens present the keys to the church, saying Buddy, receive these keys, and let the doors of this place be open to all people. Clergy of the Diocese of New York present the Constitution and Canons of this Church, saying Buddy, obey these Canons, and be among us to share in the councils of this diocese. The President of the Altar Guild presents bread and wine, saying Buddy, take this bread and wine, and be among us to break the Bread and bless the Cup. The Musicians of St. Bartholomew s Church present an anthem, newly composed by the Director of Music, saying Buddy, receive this anthem, and inspire us as we seek to perfect the praises of Almighty God with the gifts our Creator has entrusted to us. Community Ministry presents an apron, saying Buddy, accept this apron, and teach us to serve the hungry and homeless faithfully. The Director of the Preschool presents art created by the Preschool children, saying Buddy, accept this artwork with love from the Preschool children, and lead us to be a joyful school. The Head Verger presents a chasuble, part of a set of vestments commissioned as a gift from members of St. Bartholomew s to commemorate this occasion, saying Buddy, accept this chasuble, and welcome all to share in the Holy Communion. Bishop People Buddy, let all these be signs of the ministry which is mine and yours in this place. Amen. The Rector kneels in the midst of the church, saying O Lord my God, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; yet you have called your servant to stand in your house, and to serve at your altar. To you and to your service I devote myself, body, soul, and spirit. Fill my memory with the record of your mighty works; enlighten my understanding with the light of your Holy Spirit;

and may all the desires of my heart and will center in what you would have me do. Make me an instrument of your salvation for the people entrusted to my care, and grant that I may faithfully administer your holy Sacraments, and by my life and teaching set forth your true and living Word. Be always with me in carrying out the duties of my ministry. In prayer, quicken my devotion; in praises, heighten my love and gratitude; in preaching, give me readiness of thought and expression; and grant that, by the clearness and brightness of your holy Word, all the world may be drawn into your blessed kingdom. All this I ask for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. The Bishop presents the Rector to the congregation, saying Greet your new Rector. Members of the Rector s family are presented. Rector People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. At the Offertory THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST At Buddy s request, the offering is designated for the operating budget of St. Bartholomew s Church. Anthem Where charity and love prevail Composed on behalf of St. Bartholomew s parish in honor of The Rev. F. M. Buddy Stallings on the occasion of his Institution as the twelfth Rector of St. Bartholomew s Church. Sung by the Combined Choirs Jeff Morrissey, Baritone Soloist Where charity and love prevail there God is ever found; brought here together by Christ s love by love are we thus bound. With grateful joy and holy fear his charity we learn; let us with heart and mind and strength now love him in return. Forgive we now each other s faults as we our faults confess; and let us love each other well in Christian holiness. Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease; be his the glory that we seek, be ours his holy peace. Let us recall that in our midst dwells God s begotten Son; as members of his Body joined we are in him made one. Love can exclude no race nor creed if honored be God s Name; our common life embraces all whose Father is the same. Words: Latin; tr. J. Clifford Evers (b. 1916), , Word Library Publications. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. William K. Trafka The Presider proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus and Benedictus Communion Service in F Major Martha Sullivan, Soprano; Eliza Bagg, Alto; Christopher Carter, Tenor; Raphael Biran, Bass Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Harold Darke The Presider continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Presider and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. At the Breaking of the Bread Presider People Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Agnus Dei Communion Service in F Major Jeff Morrissey, Baritone Soloist O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Harold Darke

At the Communion All are welcome to receive the Holy Communion. The bread is received in the open palm. The wine, if desired, may be taken from the common cup by drinking (placing your hand gently on the base of the chalice to guide it) or by dipping the wafer of bread. If you require a gluten-free wafer, please ask the priest when the bread is offered to you. Communion will be brought to those in the galleries. If you wish to receive but are unable to come forward, let your usher know, and Communion will be brought to you. If you do not wish to receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward for a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. Motet Ave Maria St. Barthomew s Choir and St. Bart s Singers Jason Whitfield, Baritone Soloist David Bryan, Tenor Soloist Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ et concepit de Spiritu sancto. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus. et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus Christus. Maria dixit: Ecce ancilla Domini fiat mihi secundum verbum Tuum. Et verbum caro factum est et habitavit in nobis. Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu in mulieribus. et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus Christus. Sancta Maria, mater Dei ora pro nobis peccatoribus nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary that she will conceive by the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full grace, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Mary said: Behold the handmaiden of the Lord, be it done unto me according to thy word. And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full grace, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death. Amen. Franz Biebl Anthem Fairest Lord Jesus Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature, O thou of God of man the Son; thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, thou, my soul s glory, joy, and crown. Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring: Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, who makes the woeful heart to sing. Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and all the twinkling, starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer, than all the angels heaven can boast.
