Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mariann, Bishop in the Church of God, on behalf of the clergy and people of the Diocese of Washington, we present to you these persons to be ordained as priests in Christ s holy catholic Church: Elizabeth Gardner Kristen Hawley Timothy Johnson Rebecca Myers Lisa Zaina Have they been selected in accordance with the canons of this Church? And do you believe their manner of life to be suitable to the exercise of this ministry? We certify to you that they have satisfied the requirements of the canons, and we believe them to be qualified for this order. Will you be loyal to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of Christ as this Church has received them? And will you, in accordance with the canons of this Church, obey your bishop and other ministers who may have authority over you and your work? I am willing and ready to do so; and I solemnly declare that I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do solemnly engage to conform to the doctrine, discipline and worship of the Episcopal Church. The ordinands then sign the above Declaration in the sight of all present. The people stand. Dear friends in Christ, you know the importance of this ministry, and the weight of your responsibility in presenting these people for ordination to the sacred priesthood. Therefore if any of you know any impediment or crime because of which we should not proceed, come forward now, and make it known. Is it your will that these people be ordained as priests? It is. Will you uphold them in this ministry? We will. In peace let us pray to the Lord. 3

litany for ordination Sung responsively. For all members of your Church in their vocation and ministry, that they may serve you in a true and godly life, we pray to you, O Lord. For Katharine our Presiding Bishop, for Mariann our Bishop, and for all bishops, priests, and deacons, that they may be filled with your love, may hunger for truth, and may thirst after righteousness, we pray to you, O Lord. For Elizabeth, Kristen, Timothy, Rebecca, and Lisa, chosen priests in your Church, we pray to you, O Lord. That they may faithfully fulfill the duties of this ministry, build up your Church, and glorify your Name, we pray to you, O Lord. 4

That by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit they may be sustained and encouraged to persevere to the end, we pray to you, O Lord. For their families and the members of their households, that they may be adorned with all Christian virtues, we pray to you, O Lord. For all who fear God and believe in you, Lord Christ, that our divisions may cease and that all may be one as you and the Father are one, we pray to you, O Lord. For the mission of the Church, that in faithful witness it may preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, we pray to you, O Lord. For those who do not yet believe, and for those who have lost their faith, that they may receive the light of the Gospel, we pray to you, O Lord. For the peace of the world, that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord. For those in positions of public trust, that they may serve justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person, we pray to you, O Lord. For a blessing upon all human labor, and for the right use of the riches of creation, that the world may be freed from poverty, famine and disaster, we pray to you, O Lord. For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you, O Lord. For ourselves; for the forgiveness of our sins, and for the grace of the Holy Spirit to amend our lives, we pray to you, O Lord. For all who have died in the communion of your Church, and those whose faith is known to you alone, that, with all the saints, they may have rest in that place where there is no pain or grief, but life eternal, we pray to you, O Lord. Rejoicing in the fellowship of Mary the mother of Jesus, Peter, Paul and all the saints, let us commend ourselves, and one another, 5

collect for ordination The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Ministry of the Word The people are seated. the lesson Jeremiah 1:4 9 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord. Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. Reader psalm 119:33 40 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. One measure of music is sung for each half verse, changing pitch on the underlined syllable. chant: Kennedy Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; I shall keep it with all my heart. Make me go in the path of your commandments, For that is my desire. Incline my heart to your decrees and not to unjust gain. Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; give me life in your ways. Fulfill your promise to your servant, which you make to those who fear you. Turn away the reproach which I dread, because your judgments are good. Behold, I long for your commandments; in your righteousness preserve my life. 6

the gospel John 6:35 38 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me." Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. sermon The people stand. nicene creed Said by all. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. the examination The people are seated. The ordinands remain standing. My sisters and brother, the Church is the family of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. All baptized people are called to make Christ known as Savior and Lord, and to share in the renewing of his world. Now you are called to work as a pastor, priest, and teacher, together with your bishop and fellow presbyters, and to take your share in the councils of the Church. As a priest, it will be your task to proclaim by word and deed the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to fashion your life in accordance with its precepts. You are to love and serve the people among whom you work, caring alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor. You are to preach, to declare God s forgiveness to penitent sinners, to pronounce God s blessing, to share in the administration of Holy Baptism and in the celebration of the mysteries of Christ s Body and Blood, and to perform the other ministrations entrusted to you. In all that you do, you are to nourish Christ s people from the riches of his grace, and strengthen them to glorify God in this life and in the life to come. My sisters and brother, do you believe that you are truly called by God and his Church to this priesthood? Answer I believe I am so called. Answer Do you now in the presence of the Church commit yourself to this trust and responsibility? I do. 8

Answer Answer Answer Answer Answer Answer Answer Will you respect and be guided by the pastoral direction and leadership of your bishop? I will. Will you be diligent in the reading and study of the Holy Scriptures, and in seeking the knowledge of such things as may make you a stronger and more able minister of Christ? I will. Will you endeavor so to minister the Word of God and the sacraments of the New Covenant, that the reconciling love of Christ may be known and received? I will. Will you undertake to be a faithful pastor to all whom you are called to serve, laboring together with them and with your fellow ministers to build up the family of God? I will. Will you do your best to pattern your life and that of your family or household in accordance with the teachings of Christ, so that you may be a wholesome example to your people? I will. Will you persevere in prayer, both in public and in private, asking God s grace, both for yourself and for others, offering all your labors to God, through the mediation of Jesus Christ, and in the sanctification of the Holy Spirit? I will. May the Lord who has given you the will to do these things give you the grace and power to perform them. Amen. 9

During the hymn the participating clergy gather around each candidate for the laying on of hands. Silence. prayer of consecration Creator of all, we praise you for your infinite love in calling us to be a holy people in the kingdom of your Son Jesus our Lord, who is the image of your eternal and invisible glory, the firstborn among many people, and the head of the Church. We thank you that by his death he has overcome death, and, having ascended into heaven, has poured his gifts abundantly upon your people, making some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry and the building up of his body. laying on of hands Here the bishop lays hands on each of the ordinands and prays. Therefore, Gracious God, through Jesus Christ your Son, give your Holy Spirit to N.; fill him/her with grace and power, and make him/her a priest in your Church. When all have been ordained and received, the bishop then continues May Elizabeth, Kristen, Timothy, Rebecca, and Lisa exalt you, O Lord, in the midst of your people; offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to you; boldly proclaim the gospel of salvation; and rightly administer the sacraments of the New Covenant. Make them faithful pastors, patient teachers, and wise councilors. Grant that in all things they may serve without reproach, so that your people may be strengthened and your Name glorified in all the world. All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. vesting and presentation of bibles The participating clergy return to their seats and the new priests are now vested according to the order of priests. The bishop then gives a Bible to the newly ordained. greeting the new priests New priests the peace New priests Receive this Bible as a sign of the authority given you to preach the Word of God and to administer the holy Sacraments. Do not forget the trust committed to you as a priest of the Church of God. God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. We welcome you as ambassadors for Christ: let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. The clergy and people greet one another with a sign of God s peace. 11

The Holy Communion offertory sentence The people are seated while an offering is received to support the discretionary funds of the new priests. offertory anthem Draw us in the Spirit's tether Harold Friedell ( ) Draw us in the Spirit's tether; for when humbly, in thy Name, two or three are met together, thou art in the midst of them. Alleluya! Alleluya! Touch we now thy garment's hem. As the brethren used to gather in the name of Christ to sup, then with thanks to God the Father break the bread and bless the cup, Alleluya! Alleluya! So knit thou our friendship up. All our meals and all our living make as sacraments of thee, that by caring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be. Alleluya! Alleluya! We will serve thee faithfully. presentation hymn Take my life and let it be Sung by all, standing. Hollingside 12

the great thanksgiving The people remain standing throughout the Eucharistic Prayer. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: 13

sanctus and benedictus Holy, holy, holy Sung by all. A Community Mass The presider gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ s passion and resurrection and prays over the bread and wine. All the lord s prayer All Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. God of our Fathers and Mothers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God of Deborah, Miriam, and Mary Magdelene; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Holy God, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. As we join our prayers with those of the Church Universal, so we say, each in our own language, the prayer that Jesus Christ has taught us, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 14

The people are seated. ministration of communion All who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. To receive communion, come to a communion station at the direction of the ushers. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Eat the bread and then drink from the cup when it is offered to you, or, if you wish, you may hold the bread and dip it into the wine when the cup is offered to you. Gluten-free wafers are available; please make your need known to the minister. If you wish to receive a blessing rather than receive communion, please join in the movement to the communion station and cross your arms over your chest this will alert the priest of your desire to be blessed. communion anthem Ave verum corpus Nicholas White (b. 1968) Ave verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine; vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine; cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine; esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu fili Mariae; miserere mei. Amen. Hail true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, which in anguish to redeem us didst suffer upon the cross; from whose side, when pierced by spear, there came forth water and blood; be to us at our last hour the source of consolation. O sweet, O blessed, O Jesu, Son of Mary, have mercy upon me. Amen. Sequence for the Feast of Corpus Christi The people stand. hymn In my life, Lord, be glorified Bob Kilpatrick (b. 1952) 16

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the holy food of the Body and Blood of your Son, and for uniting us through him in the fellowship of your Holy Spirit. We thank you for raising up among us faithful servants for the ministry of your Word and Sacraments. We pray that Elizabeth, Kristen, Timothy, Rebecca, and Lisa may be to us an effective example in word and action, in love and patience, and in holiness of life. Grant that we, with them, may serve you now, and always rejoice in your glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. blessing New priests Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
