2 PALM SUNDAY THE COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD'S ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM (Procession starts from Courtyard) President In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. During Lent we have been preparing by works of love and self-sacrifice for the celebration of the Lord's death, and resurrection. Today we come together to begin this solemn celebration in union with the Church throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with him in faith and love, so that united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life. THE BLESSING OF THE PALMS Almighty God, we pray you, bless these crosses and palm branches and make them holy. Today we joyfully acclaim Jesus our Messiah and King. May we reach one day the happiness of the new and everlasting Jerusalem by faithfully following him who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. The crosses are distributed All Clap your hands for joy, all people! Praise God with loud songs! The Lord, the Most High, is to be feared: He is a great king, ruling over all the world. He gave us victory over the peoples; He made us rule over the nations. He chose for us the land where we live, the proud possession of his people whom he loves. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew (21: 1-11) Praise and glory to God When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, The Lord needs them. And he will send them immediately. This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, Who is this? The crowds were saying, This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee. This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ, the Word. Let us go forth in peace praising Jesus our Messiah, as did the crowds who welcomed him to Jerusalem. 3

4 Process in silence. At the front door of the Cathedral: President And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil. "Who is this?" people asked, and the crowds answered "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." Jesus then went into the temple. While the congregation enters the Cathedral and takes its places, the Choir forms in the Ambulatory. The Collect Liturgist Let us pray for a closer union with Christ in his passion. Everlasting God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son to take our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross; in your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen The Readings (please sit) Even as the exiles were about to return in joy from Babylon in 537 BC, the anonymous prophet who added to Isaiah feels the need to reflect on the suffering that had been Israel s lot, as part of God s plan. A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah (50: 4-9a) The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backwards. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? 8 Paul, writing from prison, sends affectionate greetings to the church in Philippi, thanks them for the gift they had sent him, and tells them of his own joy in Christ. A reading from St. Paul s letter to the Philippians (2: 5-11) Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death -- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 9 The Gospel (Read from the Sanctuary) All four gospels tell of Jesus entry into Jerusalem before his arrest. In Luke there is an emphasis on Jesus as the one who brings peace and has a deep compassion for the people. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory. Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on a cross. Therefore God raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names. A reading from the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke (23:1-49) Praise and glory to God. Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. They began to accuse him, saying, We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king. Then Pilate asked him, Are you the king of the Jews? He answered, You say so. Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find no basis for an accusation against this man. But they were insistent and said, He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this place. When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And when he learned that he was under Herod s jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign. He questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him back to Pilate. That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before this they had been enemies. Pilate then called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, and said to them, You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and here I have examined him in your presence and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve death. I will therefore have him flogged and release him. Then they all shouted out together, Away with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us! (This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken 9

10 place in the city, and for murder.) Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again; but they kept shouting, Crucify, crucify him! A third time he said to them, Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him. But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices prevailed. So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished. As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For the days are surely coming when they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed. Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us ; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one! The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself! There was also an inscription over him, This is the King of the Jews. One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us! But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. He replied, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise. It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, while the sun s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. Having said this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, Certainly this man was innocent. And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. (NRSV) 10

The Nicene Creed (please stand) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the Prophets. 11

14 The Great Thanksgiving The President says: The Lord is here. God s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise. It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. Hosanna to the Son of David! He challenges the power and the sword; the gentle rider on a humble beast, the Servant King. Out of love for us he accepted death and lifted high upon the cross, he drew the whole world to himself; the tree of shame became the tree of glory. Where life was lost, there life has been restored. You raised him to life triumphant over death; you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and life-giving Spirit. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit s grace and power, may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. 21 Holy Week and Easter Services at St Peter s Cathedral 2019 Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, as we remember Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when the population of the city welcomed him by laying palm leaves and cloaks on the ground in his path. Accordingly, the celebration traditionally involves a procession up the hill and into the church with palms and the distribution of palm crosses. On the evening of Maundy Thursday at 7.00p.m., we commemorate The Last Supper. This service thus traditionally includes three special elements: Jesus institution of Holy Communion, his washing of his disciples feet as a symbol of servanthood, and his giving his disciples his new commandment that they should love one another. The service concludes with the stripping of the chancel, sanctuary, and altar to leave the church bare in preparation for Good Friday. On Good Friday we commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and his being laid in the tomb. In the afternoon, at 2.00p.m., the commemoration of the crucifixion and death of Jesus is centred on the Passion of Jesus from the cross, and concludes traditionally with the Veneration of the Cross. Tenebrae, a meditative service of readings and music takes place after dark on Good Friday (7.00p.m.), to remember Jesus as he is laid in the tomb from which he will rise on Easter Day. Easter begins on Holy Saturday. At 7.00p.m., the Easter Vigil service is the first celebration of Jesus resurrection. This traditionally takes the form of the lighting of the Paschal Candle from an outdoor brazier and the use of incense. We have readings and psalms which recount the history of God s redemption of humankind, the renewal of Baptismal vows, and the first Eucharist of Easter. We sing the Gloria again for the first time since the beginning of Lent. Easter Sunday is the most important day in the Church s year. Easter Sunday celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus. The services are the usual Eucharistic services and the 9.45a.m. service includes the use of incense. 21

There is a basket at the back of the church with bags for pre-schoolers 2+ years of age. It contains items for quiet activities. Feel free to help yourselves to one.
