1 The Tractarian The Parish Newsletter of the Anglican Cathedral of the Epiphany Vol. 9, No. 3 March 2018 The Curate s Corner By The Reverend Zachary Braddock The Virtue of Charity In this third examination of the Theological Virtues (see previous issues), I would like to look at the Virtue of Charity, which is, as St. Paul tells us, the greatest of the three. Charity is often referred to as love; but, at least in the English language, this leaves it open to an ambiguousness. Charity may be defined as loving God above all, and all others in God. Charity, by Giotto It is important to remember that Love is not, first and foremost, a feeling, but rather an action. The call to the virtue of Charity is a call to live the virtues of Faith and Hope, for the simple fact that God is God, and that our neighbors are in fact our neighbors, made, as we are, in the image and likeness of God; and we as Christians are called to be concerned with their wellbeing as well as our own. St. Basil puts it well: If we turn away from evil out of fear of punishment, we are in the position of slaves. If we pursue the enticement of wages,... we resemble mercenaries. Finally, if we obey for the sake of the good itself and out of love for him who commands we are in the position of children. This will be, God willing, exemplified and lived out, in the relationship growing between the Four Anglican Jurisdictions who held their joint synods this past month. God willing, we live this out in our own individual lives as well. Above all, however, the greatest act of charity is Our Lord s offering of himself on the cross. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13) if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:1b-2) Meditating on this, take to heart the words of St. Paul, Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-2)

3 Chapel Chatter By Fr. Paul Sterne Our February service project was to assist in preparing bags of food to send to Haiti, through Feeding Children Everywhere. We helped to fill enough bags of jambalaya to provide 18,000 meals, and even got to take one of the extra bags with us to serve at our Sunday night Bible study. Our spring break retreat will be March 9-13 at St. Simeon Skete in Taylorsville, KY. The activities will include assisting in teaching local children, interceding on the streets of Louisville, and doing chores around the Skete. 4 Ordination of Jeremy Jay Boccabello Father Jay was ordained on Saturday, February 24th, and he celebrated his first Holy Communion the next day. He is gathering a new congregation at the Beaufort Chapel and Study Center in Beaufort, S.C. Over the years, he has rendered service at St. John the Baptist in Marshall, VA, and here at the Cathedral. Moreover, as our Diocesan Archdeacon, he has worked to further our relationships with other Continuing church bodies, and with the Greek Orthodox. To that end, he will be part of our deliberations in Dublin, Ireland (March 6-8), to strengthen our ties with the Greeks and with the member jurisdictions of the Union of Scranton. 6 Liturgical Questions and Quandaries Have a question about the way that we worship, or about the Prayer Book or Hymnal? Ask one of the clergy. What happens during Ordination to the Priesthood? When a new priest is ordained, such as Fr. Jay Boccabello s ordination this past February 24 th, several things are given to the new priest, immediately after the Prayer of Ordination ( Receive the Holy Ghost for the Office and work of a priest ~ BCP pg. 546) First, the new priest is vested in a priest s stole, maniple, and chasuble. These are the vestments that the priest, in particular, wears for the celebration of the Mass. The Stole itself is worn as a sign of priestly authority, and is worn for the sacraments, blessings, and some other rites. Then, the bishop anoints the new priest s hands with Chrism, which is one of the three Holy Oils the Bishop blesses or consecrates at the Chrism Mass each year. This is done to set aside the priest s hands for the new tasks they are called to do. As the bishop anoints with the oil, he prays that whatsoever they shall bless may be blessed, and whatsoever they shall consecrate may be consecrated and sanctified A chalice, containing a little wine and water, and a paten on which is placed an unconsecrated host. This confers the authority to celebrate the Eucharist. The Bishop says to the priest, Take thou authority to offer sacrifice to God, and to celebrate Mass both for the living and for the dead. In the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Finally, a Bible is handed to the priest, a sign of his authority to preach the Gospel. Heroes of the Faith George Herbert Poet and Divine ( ) George Herbert ( ) was a Welsh-born poet, orator and Anglican priest. Born to a noble family, his mother was patron to John Donne who dedicated his Holy Sonnets to her. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where in 1620 he was elected to the prestigious post of Public Orator. His first two sonnets were sent to his mother in 1610, on the theme that the love of God is a worthier subject for verse than the love of woman. They foreshadowed his future religious and poetic inclinations, but at first, Herbert was much involved in court life and Member of Parliament from In 1627, he resigned as Orator and was ordained a priest, becoming rector at Bemerton in Wiltshire where he was noted for his diligence and humility, traits reflected in his poetry, which also expresses the conflict between the religious and worldly life. When he realized he was dying of consumption, he sent a collection of his poems in manuscript to his friend Nicholas Ferrar to judge whether to burn them or publish them. The result was The Temple, religious poems using common language and rhythms of speech, published to enormous popular acclaim. Also published after his death, in 1652, was A Priest to the Temple: Or the Country Parson, his Character and Rule of Life homely, prose advice to country clerics. The Tractarian 6 March 2018
