2 THE EPISTLE (For the Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost) Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. (5:8-19) Brethren, walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it is said, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light. Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart. THE GOSPEL (For the Thirteenth Sunday of Luke) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:18-27) At that time, a man came testing Jesus and asking, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery. Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother. And the man said, All these I have observed from my youth. And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me. But when the man heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Jesus, seeing him sad, said, How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Those who heard it said, Then who can be saved? 4 November 15th, 2015 First Day of the Nativity Fast This Fast is divided into two periods: The First is Sunday, November 15th through Saturday, December 19th when the traditional fasting discipline (NO meat, poultry, dairy, fish, wine, and olive oil) is observed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with katalysis for wine and olive oil (some also permit fish) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for fish, wine, and olive oil on Saturdays and Sundays. The Second is the period of the Forefeast, Sunday, December 20th through Thursday, 24th, when the traditional fasting discipline is observed Monday through Friday, with katalysis for wine and olive oil on Saturday and Sunday only. THE SYNAXARION (Commemoration) On November 29 in the Holy Orthodox Church we commemorate the contest of the Holy Martyr Paramonos of Bithynia and his 370 fellow Martyrs. Paramonos contested for piety s sake during the reign of Decius, in the year 250. A ruler named Aquilinus, seeking relief from a bodily malady, visited a certain therapeutic hot spring. He brought with him captive 370 Christians from Nicomedia, and commanded them to offer sacrifice in the temple of Isis. When they refused, he had them all slaughtered. Paramonos, beholding their murder, boldly cried out against such an act of ungodliness. When Aquilinus heard this, he sent men to kill the Saint. Thus they all entered into the Eternal Kingdom. On this day, we also commemorate Martyr Philoumenos of Ancyra; Venerable Akakios of Sinai; Hieromartyr Dionysios, Bishop of Corinth; Urban, Bishop of Macedonia; and Nicholas, Archbishop of Thessalonica. By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy upon us. Amen.

A candidate must be Twenty-One (21) years of age or over, have been a voting Member of St. George Church for a period of one (1) year, and have fulfilled the Canonical Requirements of the Orthodox Faith. A candidate to St. George Parish Council must be in good standing spiritually, and have fulfilled his/her financial requirements as prescribed by the Parish Council." To serve on the parish council is a ministry. Mission of the Parish Council The mission of the parish Council is to keep, practice and proclaim the Orthodox Christian Faith pure and undefiled. We believe that in Orthodoxy we have the fullness of the Truth, then we have the great responsibility to share it with everyone. Choosing Suitable Candidates for the Parish Council The best parish council members are those who are Church-oriented and Christ-centered. To be a good council member, one must be active in the worship and sacramental life of the Church. The best candidates are easy to find-they are in the Church. The Priest is head of the Parish, and is charged with the guidance of the total Parish program. The parish council consists of the Priest, and the elected lay members, and is referred to as Parish Council. This is because one of the identifying traits of the Orthodox Church is that we are conciliar-decisions are made in council. Setting An Example for the Parish The duties of a parish council member include regular attendance at divine services and participation in the sacramental life of the Church,...thereby setting an example for the parish. A Commitment to Serve In the Oath of Office, the parish council members affirm that they...will fulfill faithfully and sincerely the duties and the obligations required of a member of the Parish Council No contract is signed, but a promise is made which rests on the shared commitment of all council members to serve the Church, which is the Body of Christ on earth. We are His hands, feet, eyes and more. To serve on the council is a ministry and a mission. We are called to use the gifts with which we have been blessed to carry out the work of the Church.

Statement on the Reception of Refugees in the United States Statement from the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America on the Reception of Refugees in the United States in Light of Recent Terrorist Actions around the World Since the tragic terrorist actions in Paris, Beirut, Mali and elsewhere in the past two weeks, there have been polarized reactions to the reception of refugees, mainly of Syrian nationality, worldwide: an understandable reaction of concern on the one hand, but a sad overreaction of fear on the other. We are all concerned first and foremost for the safety of the citizens of the United States which must be continually addressed and assessed. At the same time, the humanitarian disaster caused by the war in Syria to which the U.S. government has contributed by calling for the removal of the established Syrian leadership as it did in Egypt, Iraq and Libya requires a moral response from the people and government of our great country. Misguided U.S. foreign policy helped create the so-called "Arab Spring" which has been a "tornado" that has destroyed Arab countries, leaving power vacuums that have fostered the soaring, vicious activity of terrorist groups including ISIS, al- Nusra, and others in the Middle East and around the world. All of this has resulted in an unprecedented number of deaths of innocent people and lack of basic services like healthcare and sanitation, healthy food and drinking water, safe and dignified housing, and so forth. We must not be guided by fear or bigotry, but rather let us work to heal the wounds of the injured, clothing the naked and feeding the poor as our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ has taught us (Matthew 25:35-36).
