Philippians 1:2 Confession of Sin The Officiant says to the people Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Silence may be kept. Officiant and People together, all kneeling Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Deacon alone stands and says Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. The Invitatory and Psalter All stand Officiant Lord, open our lips. People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. 6 The First Lesson Isaiah 40:21-31 A Reading from Isaiah. Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. 7 The Song of Zechariah Benedictus Dominus Deus Luke 1:68-79 Hymnal S248 At 8 am: the Officiant and People skip the antiphon and read the canticle together. At 10 am: The Choir sings the Antiphon followed by the congregation. The choir sings the verses. The antiphon is repeated at the end. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins. The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 9:16-23 A reading from Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians. If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those 7

8 under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Third Lesson Mark 1:29-39 A reading from the Gospel according to Mark. After Jesus and his disciples left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted 8

9 place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. O Connell Amazing Grace The Apostles Creed Officiant and People together, all standing I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. 14 ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THE CHILDREN Our youngest worshippers are welcome in the Children s Chapel where there are professional caregivers and an age appropriate service every Sunday beginning at 9:50 am. Children return to church at announcements or may stay with the caregivers through the whole service. At any time, children and families are welcome on the big rug near the font, where there are coloring pages and crayons, and a great view of the action up front. The Break Room is available for parents and children who need a break from the service. There are books and toys for children and comfortable chairs for adults. THE WESTFIELD FARMERS MARKET February 10 th, 10 am to 3 pm, indoor winter market. OUR HOUSE Enjoy the Dan Kane Singers at the Westfield Senior Center, Sunday, February 11 at 2 pm. FEBRUARY BROWN (AND PINK) BAG PROJECT INTRODUCES SOMETHING NEW! These little brown bags and the items you generously put in them are keeping the shelves of the Westfield Food Pantry full all year long. Thank you. Starting in February, we will have a third bag option to help the School Pantries. The pantries at our schools are kept stocked by an affiliate program with the Westfield Food Pantry who funnels products to school nurses who help homeless teens with the necessities they can t easily buy. So, each month there will be a bag of another color with an item needed to help the schools. This month we ll start with pink bags for feminine products. 14
