1 C H U R C H S T A F F The Trophybearer Parish Priest/Editor: Fr. Christodoulos Margellos Parish Council President: Mary Rankin WHAT IS PRAYER! M A Y Office Secretary: Candice Kalman Philoptochos President: Susan Matos Sunday School Director: Dn Paul Speed Prayer is doxology, praise, thanksgiving, confession, supplication and intercession to God. "When I prayed I was new," wrote a great theologian of Christian antiquity, "but when I stopped praying I became old." Prayer is the way to renewal and spiritual life. Prayer is aliveness to God. Prayer is strength, refreshment, and joy. Through the grace of God and our disciplined efforts prayer lifts us up from our isolation to a conscious, loving communion with God in which everything is experienced in a new light. Prayer becomes a personal dialogue with God, a spiritual breathing of the soul, a foretaste of the bliss of God's kingdom. How is one to pray? Only the Holy Spirit can guide us to pray as we should. Just I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Holy Friday 2 Pictures May Calendar 3 as a child learns to walk by walking, one can best learn to pray by praying, trusting in the help of God. Put your whole soul into your prayer. Think about the meaning of every word you pray. Make it your own personal prayer. Be persistent in prayer. Do not yield to carelessness or neglect. Strengthen your prayer through a lively faith in the Lord, a spirit of forgiveness toward others, and genuine Christian living. Stewardship Update May Service Schedule Memorial Day Flier Community News Pascha Vigil Pictures As we pray deeply within our hearts we grow in prayer. By the grace of God we suddenly catch a glimpse of the miracle of the presence of the Holy Spirit working within us. At first it is only a spark but later it becomes a flame freeing and energizing our whole being, provided we do nothing to grieve the Holy Spirit; and if we do sin we repent of our sin immediately and ask for God's forgiveness. To experience the fire of God's holy love, to give it space within us to do its cleansing and healing work as a breath of the Holy Spirit, and to use it as light and power for daily living -- such are the goals as well as the fruits of true prayer. 4 The Council Connection 4 May 2014 Christ is Risen! Thank you to all of the parishioners of St. George who contributed their time, talent and treasure to the parish during the 2014 Easter Season. From donating for flowers to dying eggs, from providing flashlights to read the service books at evening services to being flower girls at the Lamentation Service, all efforts of our members contributed to a glorious Pascha! We are also very grateful for the many prayers for Father Christodoulos as he recovers from his recent surgery and resumes his duties serving the parish. If you have passed the back parking lot on a weekday, you will have noticed that Unity Point Health Systems/Trinity Hospital employees are utilizing every space while the Rock Island facility undergoes construction. We are glad to have been given the opportunity to help out an institution that serves the community as well as the opportunity to earn revenue through leasing the property for three months on weekdays. As mentioned in last month s newsletter, the parish council is beginning a ministry of parish renewal through an Ambassador program that will seek to increase participation of current members, seek out former parishioners to invite them to participate in the life of the Church as well as develop an outreach program to the community at large. There will be a Sunday Evening Supper on June 8 th, at 5:30 p.m. p.m. for anyone who is interested in this ministry. Please contact me if you would like more information on this project (mbarton83@aol.com or ). Yours in Christ, Mary Rankin Parish Council President 4

Joining Philoptochos really means actively living and practicing our Orthodox faith. It also means being an important part of a truly dynamic force of humanitarian outreach in our community. There can be no better response to the question of why join Philoptochos than to say your membership and participation is the manifestation and witness of your faith as an Orthodox Christian. All women and men in the St. George parish are invited to be members. All prospective members are welcome to attend our meetings and learn what we are all about! See enclosed sign up form for more information, KOLYVA FOR MEMORIALS: As many of us know in order to have a memorial in the Orthodox Church we need to have Kolyva. Because of this we have started offering to make Kolyva for anyone who needs to have one and either does not have time or does not know how to make them. We will charge $ for a tray and it will be ready for Sundays. Families are welcome to help with the making of the Kolyva as well. For more information on ordering Kolyva contact the church office. REACHING OUT: In an attempt to reach out to former parishioners of St. George we are asking all members to please call the church office with any former members who have fallen away from the church. Fr. Christodoulos will then reach out to them. Please if you have anybody in mind please call the church office or speak with Fr. Christodoulos HOSPITAL VISITS: If you or a family member are in the hospital, please call the office. Ever since the change in the privacy laws, hospitals are reluctant to call churches. 12 St. George Greek Orthodox Church st Ave Rock Island, IL Phone: Fax: Priest Office SAINTS CONSTANTINE & HELEN: 12 This great and renowned sovereign of the Christians was the son of Constantius Chlorus (the ruler of the westernmost parts of the Roman empire), and of the blessed Helen. He was born in 272, in (according to some authorities) Naissus of Dardania, a city on the Hellespont. In 306, when his father died, he was proclaimed successor to his throne. In 312, on learning that Maxentius and Maximinus had joined forces against him, he marched into Italy, where, while at the head of his troops, he saw in the sky after midday, beneath the sun, a radiant pillar in the form of a cross with the words: "By this shalt thou conquer." The following night, our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him in a dream and declared to him the power of the Cross and its significance. When he arose in the morning, he immediately ordered that a labarum be made (which is a banner or standard of victory over the enemy) in the form of a cross, and he inscribed on it the Name of Jesus Christ. On the 28th Of October, he attacked and mightily conquered Maxentius, who drowned in the Tiber River while fleeing. The following day, Constantine entered Rome in triumph and was proclaimed Emperor of the West by the Senate, while Licinius, his brother-in-law, ruled in the East. But out of malice, Licinius later persecuted the Christians. Constantine fought him once and again, and utterly destroyed him in 324, and in this manner he became monarch over the West and the East. Under him and because of him all the persecutions against the Church ceased. Christianity triumphed and idolatry was overthrown. In 325 he gathered the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which he himself personally addressed. In 324, in the ancient city of Byzantium, he laid the foundations of the new capital of his realm, and solemnly inaugurated it on May 11, 330, naming it after himself, Constantinople. Since the throne of the imperial rule was transferred thither from Rome, it was named New Rome, the inhabitants of its domain were called Romans, and it was considered the continuation of the Roman Empire. Falling ill near Nicomedia, he requested to receive divine Baptism, according to Eusebius (The Life of Constantine. Book IV, 61-62), and also according to Socrates and Sozomen; and when he had been deemed worthy of the Holy Mysteries, he reposed in 337, on May 21 or 22, the day of Pentecost, having lived sixty-five years, of which he ruled for thirty-one years. His remains were transferred to Constantinople and were deposed in the Church of the Holy Apostles, which had been built by him (see Homily XXVI on Second Corinthians by Saint John Chrysostom). As for his holy mother Helen, after her son had made the Faith of Christ triumphant throughout the Roman Empire, she undertook a journey to Jerusalem and found the Holy Cross on which our Lord was crucified (see Sept. 13 and 14). After this, Saint Helen, in her zeal to glorify Christ, erected churches in Jerusalem at the sites of the Crucifixion and Resurrection, in Bethlehem at the cave where our Savior was born, another on the Mount of Olives whence He ascended into Heaven, and many others throughout the Holy Land, Cyprus, and elsewhere. She was proclaimed Augusta, her image was stamped upon golden coins, and two cities were named Helenopolis after her in Bithynia and in Palestine. Having been thus glorified for her piety, she departed to the Lord being about eighty years of age, according to some in the year 330, according to others, in 336.
