We go to her only as a way leading to the goal we seek Jesus, her Son. Saint Louis Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, #94

Dear Apostles of Divine Mercy, With the month of October approaching, we are called once again to remember that this is the month of Mary and the Rosary. We celebrate the Feast of the Holy Rosary on October 7th. On October 5th is the Feast of St. Faustina, which we will be celebrated with a Mass on October 1st, as she is the model of our Apostolate. This month s Newsletter is entitled Mary, Ark of the Covenant! As we continue to study the Papal Bull for the Jubilee Year of Mercy by Pope Francis, he calls Mary, the Ark of the Covenant. In #24. My thoughts now turn to the Mother of Mercy. May the sweetness of her countenance watch over us in this Holy Year, so that all of us may rediscover the joy of God s tenderness. No one has penetrated the profound mystery of the incarnation like Mary. Her entire life was patterned after the presence of mercy made flesh. The Mother of the Crucified and Risen One has entered the sanctuary of Divine Mercy because she participated intimately in the mystery of His love. Chosen to be the Mother of the Son of God, Mary, from the outset, was prepared by the love of God to be the Ark of the Covenant between God and man. She treasured Divine Mercy in her heart in perfect harmony with her Son Jesus. Her hymn of praise, sung at the threshold of the home of Elizabeth, was dedicated to the mercy of God which extends from generation to generation (Lk 1:50). We too were included in those prophetic words of the Virgin Mary. This will be a source of comfort and strength to us as we cross the threshold of the Holy Year to experience the fruits of Divine Mercy. At the foot of the Cross, Mary, together with John, the disciple of love, witnessed the words of forgiveness spoken by Jesus. This supreme expression of mercy towards those who crucified Him show us the point to which the mercy of God can reach. Mary attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone, without exception. Let us address her in the words of the Salve Regina, a prayer ever ancient and ever new, so that she may never tire of turning her merciful eyes upon us, and make us worthy to contemplate the face of mercy, her Son Jesus. Our prayer extends to the saints and blessed ones who made Divine Mercy their mission in life. I think especially of the great apostle of mercy, Saint Faustina Kowalska. May she, who was called to enter the depths of Divine Mercy, intercede for us and obtain for us the grace of living and walking always according to the mercy of God and with an unwavering trust in His love. by Shirley Oleskiw, Director Page 2

OUR EADM CENTRE Here in the Chapel, we have special devotions to our Blessed Mother. We enjoy the devotions, particularly the reciting of the Rosary before every Mass, and the special celebrations on her Feast Days. The Month of October is no exception. We will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th from 3:00-4:00 pm, with hymns, reciting the Litany and Rosary. Daily Adoration of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament continues here in our Chapel. We invite you to ask your friends to join you in Eucharistic Adoration. Our Centre is definitely a great place of healing. Over and over I hear the stories of people who have come here to pray, and their lives have been changed forever. I am presently compiling a pictorial booklet on our history including stories of miracles that we have been told or having experienced. If you have a picture or story to tell of which you have experienced a miracle at the Chapel or at your home from St. Faustina s oil or relic, please write it down and mail it to us. With the grace of God, our goal is to have it completed when the Jubilee of Mercy starts on Dec. 8th. Don t forget about our Divine Mercy flags, they will be available for the Jubilee of Mercy. More information is on the back cover of this newsletter. Mary s Garden is being changed for winter with angels and trees of light for the months of October and November. On October 1st, you are invited to join us in a Special Healing Mass celebrating the Feast Day of St. Faustina (Oct. 5th). Following the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we will have a blessing with St. Faustina s oil and relic, and then coffee and dainties, and a picture show of our visit to Poland and Ukraine, to complete the celebration. The pilgrimage to Guadalupe for January has been finalized. Fr. James Owolagba will be coming with us. The final payment is due by November 10, Mass will be held on Thursday, October 1st with 6:30 pm. We will pray the Novena to St. Faustina at 3:00 pm daily from September 26 October 4. Page 3

Page 4 Mary, Ark of the Covenant! As we study and learn more about Mary, thus we get to know more about Jesus her Son. Every grace she received and every role she held within salvation history is rooted in Christ. Her role as the New Ark of the Covenant, serves to reveal the true nature of her Son Jesus Christ. He was one person with two natures, one divine and one human, born of the Virgin Mary. The Old Testament was the physical place of the old Ark of the Covenant, When God told Moses not to enter the holy place before the mercy seat which is upon the Ark. The New Ark was the physical dwelling of Jesus in the Word Incarnate. The New Testament perfects the Old, and whereas the old Ark of the Covenant had been lost, God provided a new and more perfect one an immaculate woman. The Ark moves from being a human artifact of wood and gold, to the highest honored and highest human creature, when at the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel addressed Mary as Hail, full of Grace. She was Immaculate, a pure vessel of Christ s Incarnation, a Virgin and sinless flesh from which Christ would draw His human nature. Mary was full of grace because she was born without original sin and had remained sinless in order to be the New Ark of the Covenant, the Mother of God. By Mary s Fiat, God took on a physical presence in her womb, and she became the Mother of God. Never had anything like this been seen before, the second person of the Trinity became incarnate, and His mission is the forgiveness and satisfaction of mankind. The Old Testament Ark was said to contain the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments carved by the finger of God, the priestly rod of Moses brother Aaron, and the heavenly manna that sustained Israel in post-egyptian wandering. The New Ark of the Covenant is the Immaculate Woman Mary. Since being overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, her womb became the dwelling place of God on Earth until the birth of Christ. As the New Testament is a perfection and fulfillment of the Old, so too is Christ s Incarnation in the Virgin Mary a perfection of the Old Ark of the Covenant. The contents of the New Ark perfect the contents of the Old Ark insofar as Christ the Lord takes upon Himself the roles of the former objects: Word of God, Bread of Life, & Eternal Priest. (Cont d on page 5)

The Tablets of the Covenant represented the old covenant and its laws. Christ comes and perfects those laws, most notably during his Sermon on the Mount. Changing the Laws requires the proper authority, and to change divine laws required divine authority. Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, had the divine authority. Concerning the Old Ark and manna, Christ our Lord is the perfect Bread of Life. In the Gospel of John, Christ gives his famous Eucharistic Discourse, which paves the way for discussion on the Eucharist and Christ s body and blood as the life giving sacrament, from the Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. He demonstrated His authority both as the Eternal King in the lineage of King David and as the Eternal Priest in the lineage of Melchizedek. The rod of Aaron was a sign of the priesthood. The subject of Christ as the Eternal Priest is exhausted by the book of Hebrews. There it highlights the High Priest Melchizedek, and the legitimacy of Christ s eternal priesthood being rooted in the Order of Melchizedek. Let us now compare the joy of the Ark. In Hebrews it shares the story of David s joy when he received the Old Ark of the Covenant. David speaks of his unworthiness before the Ark and dances and leaps before the presence of the Lord. In the Gospel of Luke, the evangelist records the story of when Mary went to visit Elizabeth, and Elizabeth asks with joy why Mary has come to her using the term mother of my Lord. as Elizabeth does before the New Ark and John the Baptist leaps in joy within Elizabeth s womb. In her deep humility and meekness of heart, listen to her words in her canticle from Luke 1: 46-50: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for He regarded the low estate of His handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed; for He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm, He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree: He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent empty away. He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy, and He spoke of our fathers, To Abraham and to His posterity forever. (Cont d on page 6) Page 5

In Sacred Scripture it tells us that the old ark was lost and that the people yearned for its return. In the Apocalypse of St. John, Revelations 12, Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant, the New Eve and the New Queen. She fits the roles of the enmity between Eve and the serpent as first stated in Genesis. Biblically speaking, Mother Mary fits the roles within Revelation 12, and for our purposes here, shows herself to be the New Ark of the Covenant. St. Pope John Paul II writes in Redemptoris Mater that For every Christian, for every human being, Mary is the one who first believed. And precisely with her faith as Spouse and Mother, she wishes to act upon all those who entrust themselves to her as her children. The more her children persevere and progress in this attitude, the nearer Mary leads them to the unsearchable riches of Christ. Given what Vatican II calls the indissoluble bond uniting Mary and her Son, it follows that as Mother of the Eucharistic Jesus, she now remains as closely united with the sacramental sacrifice as with its prototype at Golgotha. In other words the Virgin is present at every Mass with its High Priest and victim, renewing her maternal compassion and exercising her universal intercession. This explains why the Mother of the faithful so earnestly desires that we attend Mass frequently and fervently. What the people of the Old Testament and Ark so dearly waited for thousands of years, we have been blessed to enjoy the New Testament and the New Ark, by believing in our redemption and presence of her Son Jesus Christ. Let us not overlook this great gift that God has given us. by Shirley Oleskiw Name Plates Available in Chapel For a tax donation of $ you can order a name plate to be placed under the rays of Mercy in our Chapel. Call us if you want one, especially in memory of your loved ones. We pray for them daily and at our Masses. Page 6

Saint Faustina-a Model for Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy It was to Saint Faustina Kowalska ( ), a simple uneducated nun from Poland, that the Lord chose to spread the Divine Mercy message and devotion. She was born in 1905 in the village of Glogowiec in Central Poland. She came from a large, poor peasant family, and attended less than three years of elementary school. When nearly twenty years old, and after a few years of work as a domestic servant working with wealthy families, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Her seemingly ordinary life concealed in itself an exceptionally profound union with God. It was to this simple nun that our Lord came and announced....today I am sending you with My mercy to the people of the whole world. I do not want to punish aching mankind, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My merciful heart (Diary, 1588). Jesus told St. Faustina, I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it. I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy towards your neighbor: the first by deed, the second by word, the third by prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. (Diary, 742). Deed is expressed in spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Pope Francis in his Papal Bull #15 for the Year of the Jubilee of Mercy asks us all to take part in this mission. He states, It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, (Cont d on page 8) Page 7

comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. We cannot escape the Lord s words to us, and they will serve as the criteria upon which we will be judged: whether we have fed the hungry and given drink to the thirsty, welcomed the stranger and clothed the naked, or spent time with the sick and those in prison (cf. Mt 25:31-45). Moreover, we will be asked if we have helped others to escape the doubt that causes them to fall into despair and which is often a source of loneliness; if we have helped to overcome the ignorance in which millions of people live, especially children deprived of the necessary means to free them from the bonds of poverty; if we have been close to the lonely and afflicted; if we have forgiven those who have offended us and have rejected all forms of anger and hate that lead to violence; if we have had the kind of patience God shows, who is so patient with us; and if we have commended our brothers and sisters to the Lord in prayer. In each of these little ones, Christ himself is present. His flesh becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us. Let us not forget the words of Saint John of the Cross: as we prepare to leave this life, we will be judged on the basis of love. As Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy, we must exemplify His mercy by doing spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Saint Faustina prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet incessantly for the dying, and on several occasions bilocated to the bedside of a dying person. The Lord told her, My Daughter, help me to save souls. You will go to a dying sinner, and you will continue to recite the Chaplet, and in this way you will obtain for him trust in My mercy, for he is already in despair (Diary, 1797). As members of Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy, we must aspire to imitate the virtuous life of St. Faustina. We must lead a sacramental life, spreading appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist and the sanctity of life, and living and doing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. We must overcome any obstacles of indifference and respond to the requests of Jesus and Pope Francis. Like St. Faustina, we may also be called to suffer in the valley of tears. Yet we look forward to being with our Merciful Savior and Merciful Mother, and receiving our eternal reward in Heaven as promised by Jesus. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 8

The Feast Day of the Our Lady of Holy Rosary: October 7 This feast was instituted by Pope St. Pius V in thanksgiving for the great naval victory over the Turks at the battle of Lepanto on this day in the year 1570, a favor due to the recitation of the Rosary. This victory saved Europe from being overrun by the forces of Islam. Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever gained over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted in the Litany of Loretto. In 1572, on the anniversary of the battle, Pope Pius V instituted this feast in thanksgiving to Our Lady of the Rosary. He invited all to celebrate by meditating on the mysteries of Christ and following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At Belgrade the Turks were defeated on the Feast of Our Lady at Nives in A second victory gained that year on the Octave of the Assumption determined Pope Clement XI to command the Feast of the Rosary to be celebrated by the universal Church. Leo XIII added the invocation "Queen of the most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loretto. The Feast is in reality a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed on Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen. In modern times successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. It is a form of contemplative prayer, mental and vocal prayer, which brings down God s blessing on the Church. It is a biblically inspired prayer which is centered on meditation on the salvific mysteries of Christ in union with Mary, who was so closely associated with her Son in his redeeming activity. During the month of October, we should all make a special effort to pray the Rosary daily. by Shirley Oleskiw Mother of Mercy...In the evening, I saw the Mother of God, with Her breast bared and pierced with a sword. She was shedding bitter tears and shielding us against God s terrible punishment. God wants to inflict terrible punishment on us, but He cannot because the Mother of God is shielding us... (Diary, 686). Page 9

Our Mother of Mercy, St. Faustina and Priests Our Blessed Mother has a great love for her priest Sons. On several occasions she showed to St. Faustina how she loved her priests. On this one occasion a priest had asked St. Faustina to pray for his intentions, so she began a nine day Novena to the Mother of God. Towards the end of the Novena the Mother of God appeared to her holding the Infant Jesus in her arms, and the priest, her confessor, was kneeling at Her feet talking with Her. The Infant Jesus slipped out of His Mothers arms and went to converse with St. Faustina. She was overwhelmed by the beauty of the Infant Jesus. Then she heard a few of the words that the Mother of God spoke to her confessor. The words were: I am not only the Queen of Heaven, but also the Mother of Mercy and your Mother. And at that moment She stretched out her right hand, in which She was clasping her mantle and She covered the priest with it (Diary,330). On another occasion St. Faustina saw her Spiritual Director surrounded by a light which flowed from our Blessed Mother, because of the love that he had for her. (Diary,# 806). In passage 1585, St. Faustina tells us about a vision she had of the Mother of God, In the midst of a great brilliance, I saw the Mother of God clothed in a white gown,. On her left arm She held the Child Jesus. She looked at me kindly and said: I am the Mother of God of Priests. At that, She lowered Jesus from her arms to the ground, raised Her right hand heavenward and said: O God, bless Poland, bless priests. Then She addressed me once again: Tell the priests what you have seen (Diary 1585). Even though St. Faustina did not understand what she saw, she still recorded it and in her heart knew that the Mother of God had a very special love for her priest Sons. In one instance, St. Faustina was instructed by our Lord, Ask of My Faithful servant Tell him Father Sopocko needed her helpful suggestions as shown by his own words, There are truths of the faith which we are supposed to know and which we frequently refer to, but we do not understand them very well, nor do we live by them. It was so with me, concerning the Divine Mercy. (Cont d on page 11) Page 10

I had thought of this truth so many times in meditations, retreats, I had spoken of it so often in sermons and repeated it in the liturgical prayers, but I had not gone to the core of its substance and its significance for the spiritual life; in particular, I had not understood, and for the moment I could not even agree, that the Divine Mercy is the highest attribute of God, the Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier. It was only when I encountered a simple holy soul who was in close communion with God, who, as I believe, with divine inspiration told me of it, that she impelled me to read, research and reflect on this subject. (cf. Life & Mission p. 167) In conclusion I would just like to reassure our brothers in Christ that our Blessed Mother, St. Faustina and Father Sopocko set very good examples to follow. In these difficult times we face, trust in our Lord is very much needed for the will of God to be carried out in our lives. Please love, support, and pray for our priests. by Shirley Oleskiw Dives in Misericordia, Rich in Mercy & Mary by St. Pope John Paul II, November 30, 1980 (The following are excerpts from Section 9, Mother of Mercy.) Mary has obtained mercy in a particular and exceptional way, as no other person ever has. In an exceptional way, she made possible with the sacrifice of her heart her own sharing in revealing God's mercy. This sacrifice is intimately linked with the cross of her Son, at the foot of which she was to stand on Calvary....No one has experienced, to the same degree as the Mother of the crucified One, the mystery of the cross, the overwhelming encounter of divine transcendent justice with love: that "kiss" given by mercy to justice. No one has received into his heart, as much as Mary did, that mystery, that truly divine dimension of the redemption effected on Calvary by means of the death of the Son, together with the sacrifice of her maternal heart, together with her definitive "fiat." Mary, then, is the one who has the deepest knowledge of the mystery of God's mercy. She knows its price, she knows how great it is. In this sense, we call her the Mother of mercy: our Lady of mercy, or Mother of Divine Mercy; in each one of these titles there is a deep theological meaning, for they express the special preparation of her soul, of her whole personality, so that she was able to perceive, through the complex events, first of Israel, then of every individual and of the whole of humanity, that mercy of which "from generation to generation" people become sharers according to the eternal design of the most Holy Trinity. Page 11

How to Get an Indulgence for Praying the Rosary The Holy Rosary Pope John Paul II wrote in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 25, The Rosary is at the same time a meditation and an imploration with Mary to unite ourselves more and more to Jesus Christ.... To pray the Rosary is to hand over our burdens to the merciful hearts of Christ and His Mother. What is an indulgence? Our Catechism of the Catholic Church, # 1471 teaches: The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance. An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. Indulgences may be applied to the living or the dead. Through the Holy Catholic Church, by the authority granted her by Christ Jesus, that temporal pain can be removed with indulgences that are concrete steps toward conversion here on earth. Therefore the earning of indulgences cannot be only external gestures, done superficially, but must be a process of interior growth toward actual detachment from sin. Catholics can gain an indulgence for themselves or apply it to the souls of the deceased. We can gain a plenary indulgence for reciting the Holy Rosary by following certain guidelines laid down by the Holy Catholic Church. We must ask for the indulgence and fulfill the following three conditions: sacramental confession in the month, Eucharistic Communion and prayer, (Our Father and Hail Mary) for the pope s intentions. The five decades must be recited continuously, and a plenary indulgence may be gained only once in a day. We must have a penitent attitude that opens us to receive the complete remission of the temporal guilt of sin, which God desires to grant us through the Holy Catholic Church by Shirley Oleskiw (The Gift of the Indulgence, Apostolic Penitentiary, Nov. 29, 1998, January 29, 2000).
