In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me; but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped from his hands. It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold. When He had said these things He cried, He who has ears to hear, let him hear! Then His disciples asked Him, saying, What does this parable mean? And He said, To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience. There is a sign up sheet posted on the bulletin board downstairs next to the other three sign up sheets (i.e. cleaning, coffee hour, reading schedule). The cost of the 2018 St Tikhon s calendars is $6 per calendar. 4 Announcements 40 Days For Life Philadelphia Campaign Fall Season: The 40 Days for Life Fall Campaign has begun (from September 27 to November 5). This will be the largest campaign ever with peaceful vigils occurring in ALL 50 states at the same time! Meanwhile the killing still continues at Planned Parenthood. Thank you so much in advance for signing up for this list and being willing to continue standing up for those that can t speak for themselves. The 40 Days For Life is not a political organization or a protest group. They stand and pray as a peaceful physical presence and witness for the lives of the unborn, who cannot speak for themselves. Other peaceful vigils located in the surrounding areas include: New Jersey - Absecon (Atlantic City area) and Cherry Hill Pennsylvania Northeast Philadelphia, Norristown, Warminster, and West Chester Delaware Wilmington and Dover ******************************************************************************* From the book: A Guide To Church Etiquette In The Orthodox Church Children in Church Christ said, Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for such is the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:14). It is possible for young children to remain in church throughout a service if they are taught to be quiet and respectful. Many parishes have cry rooms or nurseries for those who are too small to be quiet throughout the whole Liturgy. Please be respectful to those around you if your child becomes fussy or out of control, and remove them from the nave of the church quickly. If a very young child needs a snack, please clear away any leftover pieces. However, the child should not have anything in his mouth when he comes to Holy Communion. It is never appropriate to allow a child to run down the aisles, play loudly, or carry toys that make noise. Eventually, children will be able to spend longer times in the Liturgy. That is where they should be, but remember the reason for coming to church is to pray and worship. Plan to have your children use the restroom and get a drink before church begins, and don t allow them to come and go continually. Consider bringing your children into the church at a time when the Liturgy is finished to practice church behavior. Teach them that they are visiting God s very special house, and they will need to have very special manners there. 4

According to Article 10, Section 1, of the Parish By-Laws, notice of all Parish Meetings shall be announced in the Parish Bulletin and read by the Parish Rector from the amvon on three consecutive Sundays preceding the date of the meeting. The General Parish Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, October 22. Discussions will include events since the last Parish Meeting; activities over the next few months; the status of the Property Committee; and any other business that needs to be discussed. November 4 from 9AM to 1PM Harvest Fest Luncheon and Fall Outside Church and Hall Clean Up. With the beauty of Autumn comes the falling of the leaves, so the Property Committee is asking everyone to join them on November 4 to help clean up the church hall yard and outside property. In addition, Father Mark will bless the newly planted pussy willow tree in the yard. Afterwards, we will enjoy a lunch filled with Fall themed goodies! Yummmmm! 7

8 Commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council [Oct 15 th ] Today the Church remembers the 350 holy Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council under the holy Patriarch Tarasius (February 25). The Synod of 787, the second to meet at Nicea, refuted the Iconoclast heresy during the reign of Empress Irene and her son Constantine. VI. The Council decreed that the veneration of icons was not idolatry (Exodus 20:4-5), because the honor shown to them is not directed to the wood or paint, but passes to the prototype (the person depicted). It also upheld the possibility of depicting Christ, Who became man and took flesh at His Incarnation. The Father, on the other hand, cannot be represented in His eternal nature, because no man has seen God at any time (John 1:18). In Greek practice, the holy God-bearing Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council are commemorated on October 11 (if it is a Sunday), or on the Sunday that follows October 11. According to the Slavic MENAION, however, if the eleventh falls on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, the service is moved to the preceding Sunday. [Note: Today s readings for the Sunday of the Holy Fathers are as follows: Epistle Hebrews 13:7-16 and Gospel John 17:1-13] 8
