1 ST. MARON MARONITE CATHOLIC CHURCH The Glorious Epiphany page 107 January 6, 2019 On the Feast of the Epiphany we remember when Jesus came to John the Baptist, and was baptized as all the people. Jesus, the Son of God, who is without sin, was baptized as all human sinners. Saint Augustin said: God became man to make man God. Because the servant was changed into master God took the condition of servant. The inhabitant of the heavens lived on the earth so that the inhabitant of the earth might find dwelling in the heavens. Jesus took our humanity to exchange with us his divinity as we sing in our mass. The purpose of Jesus is to restore our image as sons and daughters of God, image that the sin has distorted. He went to John and was baptized to open for us the door of the Heaven, teaching us that with our baptism we are not only Christian but we are also citizens of Heaven. When we were baptized we became a member of the mystical body of Jesus Christ, the Church. We became sons and daughters of God and at the same time brothers and sisters in the community of Church. With our birth we had a family, with our baptism we received a bigger family. The baptism is the door of the sacraments, the door to be in communion with God through the church. Through the sacrament of baptism we became part of the Church; we are ambassadors of Jesus Christ in this World. This is our identity: To bring Jesus for everyone, man and woman in this world. Let us think today a little about our baptism, when we were baptized. Who were our godfather and godmother? Did they guide us to Jesus? When we were baptized our parents didn t ask us our opinion; they decided that for us. Today we are called to renew our baptism, to say again yes for God, to accept our communion with our brothers and sisters in the church. To be an effective member in my Church, to give testimony to others of the love of God for us. Today we are called to renew our faith in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. People can not separate physically baptized from non-baptized, but they can see the effects of our baptism, the way we engage in our faith and in our Church. We meet once a month in the Parish Center in Independence. Our first meeting of 2019 is, (UPDATED MEETING DATE) Wednesday January 23rd at 7:00 pm. There are no dues or registration required, just bring a side dish to share and your views to discuss in a laid back, relaxed atmosphere. Brothers and sisters, The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one look down on you. Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show every courtesy to everyone. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. The evangelist writes, As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother s wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done, added to them all by shutting up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. This is the truth! Peace be with you.
