Volume XLVII, No. 1 Spring-Summer 2016 CHARISM We are Benedictine women of Yankton, South Dakota, sharing gift of seeking God through prayer, work, study, and community life. MISSION Rooted in rural heritage and growing in relationship with God and one another in monastic community, we live a life of prayer, work and lectio by which we serve God and God s people in time and place. CORE VALUES Christians follow Christ by bringing to life the values of the Gospel. We have gathered clusters of these values into these three: Awareness of God Community Hospitality What a blessing the Year of Mercy is! The logo and the motto together provide a summary of what the Jubilee Year is all about. The motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure (cf. Lk 6:37-38). The logo is designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love and power to change one s life. Pope Francis has been a symbol of God s mercy as we see him interacting with people, looking them in the eye, making them aware of how special they are to God. Mercy was the focus of Lenten prayers and liturgies at Sacred Heart Monastery. The liturgy planning team created a PowerPoint on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy which greeted us in the gathering space. This featured both local and international needs. Twenty Sisters and guests attended the Benedictine Peace Center Lenten retreat, Building a Church of Mercy; Being a People of Compassion, which centered on the meaning of mercy and Scriptural parables of mercy, such as the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan. As we are challenged by the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, we continue to serve on local non-profit boards. Sisters regularly visit prisons, help feed the hungry at the Yankton Community Banquet, and have taken meals out on Saturday evenings to the Yankton Homeless Shelter. Our concern goes beyond Yankton: Lenten alms from the Sisters will be sent to AIM the Alliance for International Monasticism, which assists Third World Benedictines. Our librarian, S. Lynn Osika, periodically sends duplicate copies of books to English speaking monasteries. In this Year of Mercy, we are both reminded to receive God s mercy and to give it. God s mercy is always waiting for us, but this special time gives us the opportunity to rejoice in it and share it.

Reflections from the Prioress S. Penny Bingham OSB Prioress Dear Friends, We have just celebrated Easter, remembering the Paschal Mystery of Jesus, as he lovingly passed through suffering and death to resurrected life. Whether in life or death or resurrection, Jesus is the face of the Father s mercy, as Pope Francis reminds us in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We are called to be like Jesus, to be compassionate to one another, to be merciful like the Father. The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, listed below, are specific ways to practice mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead The Spiritual Works of Mercy Admonish the sinner Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Comfort the sorrowful Bear wrongs patiently Forgive all injuries Pray for the living and the dead Hopefully, the pictures that you view and the stories you will read here will show us Yankton Benedictines as trying to live mercifully, as well as being open to receiving the mercy of others. Sister Eileen O Connor s life epitomized mercy, as she was ever ready to respond generously to anyone in need. You will be able to recognize mercy in the stories of Jubilarians as well. We are now experiencing the mercy of a new residential volunteer. Isn t it amazing that a person would offer months of her life to help out in various ways in monastery? And we learn mercy from you, readers, and other neighbors, like several of the local teens who shared with us their story of going to the January March for Life and being stranded on the Pennsylvania Turnpike on their return trip. As the Earth continues greening and bursting forth with new life in this Easter season and through summer, may we share the abundant fruit of mercy, both giving and receiving mercy. Friends, let us pray for one another, that we may be merciful like the Father. God s blessings for you, S. 3 S. Julie Peak and Mike Healy (SHM employee) assist a resident as she moves to Majestic Bluffs. A number of sisters assisted on moving day for the transfer of residents from Avera Yankton Care Center to the new facility at Majestic Bluffs. Each Sister stayed with a resident once they got out to the Bluffs and waited for beds and belongings to be transferred to their rooms. S. Clarice Korger, Vocation Director, has been traveling in the area for various outreach opportunities, visiting the USD Newman Center on January 26 for a vocation presentation and speaking with three classes of O Gorman juniors about vocations to (Left to right) Subs with the Sisters, S. Fran the religious life at Streff, S. Margretta Doyle, student, and the end of January. S. Madonna Schmitt Thank you to S. Kathryn Easley for recommending the Sisters from Sacred Heart Monastery to Mr. Baustian, the theology teacher. On February 7, S. Clarice spoke to the Catholic Newman Group, college students at Christ the King Parish. This group is made up of the Catholic students from Augustana and University of Sioux Falls. Br. August from Elkhorn, NE, was a part of the presentation on Benedictine religious life. S. Phyllis Hunhoff and Fr. O Dell helped make the opportunity possible. On March 17, 2016, six Mount Marty college women were invited to the Monastery. They joined the Sisters at Vespers, and a group of Sisters and the women enjoyed an evening together with fun, conversation, and sub sandwiches. On April 26, S. Clarice spoke at the Newman Center in Brookings, SD. On February 1, S. Jodie Zimmerman spoke to a greatnephew s class for Catholic Schools Week. Also associated with Catholic Schools Week, on February 4, we Sisters had 145 students from Sacred Heart School, Yankton here for Mass. S. Anna Dangel was the reader, and the February 4: Sacred Heart School, Yankton children participated in the Prayers of the Faithful and Presentation of Gifts. S NOTES 3 On March 8, Dan and Cameron Specht, Doug and Kate Budig, and Kristen Rezac presented a powerpoint and spoke to us about their experience at March for Life 2016 in Washington, D C and the experience of attending Mass in the middle of a blizzard on the Pennsylvania Turnpike with 500 other people. The three young women expressed how their faith was energized by their participation and by the witness of others from across the country. Sister Mary Kay Panowicz was part of a visitation team for the Benedictine Sisters in Beech Grove, IN, during the first week in March. Alliance for International Monasticism (AIM) is a group that helps Sisters in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. All the donations that Monastery received at Mass during Lent were given to AIM. The Sisters ate simpler meals without dessert on Wednesday nights during Lent. The money saved from this meal, along with any donations, was given to one of the projects sponsored by AIM. Students from St. Benedict/Sacred Heart School, Yankton; St. Agnes, Vermillion; and St. Rose, Crofton, NE made a Triduum Retreat during Holy Week here at the Monastery. The two-story farmhouse, located at the west end of the Monastery cemetery drive, has been torn down. It had served its purpose and was no longer cost efficient. It was built in the late 1940 s for employees and served various other purposes over the years. Several families lived there, as well as various groups of Sisters, the Sisters Formation Team, visitors, and employees. It was the first male residence hall when Mount Marty College went co-ed in Later it was a residence hall for the MMC women students. 4 SISTER JENNIFER KEHRWALD grew up in Yankton, SD, and is the third child of Pearl and Walter Kehrwald. She attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Mount Marty High School in Yankton, being educated by the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton for 12 years. She was also encaged by one of the sisters to come and see. The whole Catholic culture Sister lived in provided support for her decision, beginning with her parents. After entering Sacred Heart Monastery she pursued a degree in German and a minor in Chemistry. Before becoming a full time instructor, she engaged in travel with the Foreign Study League with S. Angeline Keating to Germany and Austria and spent a summer as a care-taker in Tennessee. After final profession, Sister Jennifer taught at O Gorman High School. This was followed by graduate studies at the University of St. Louis where she earned a Masters in Religious Studies. Sister Jennifer s ministries have included teaching at the college level, serving various Health Systems in Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota, and South Dakota, notably serving as Regional Director in North Dakota and South Dakota, President of Benedictine Health System in Yankton, Chaplain, and as Procurator Business Manager and Prioress of Sacred Heart Monastery. Sister Jennifer most recently was Canonical Administrator with the Benedictine Sisters in Crookston, Minnesota. She has finished this ministry and is now on Sabbatical until September. Of her Jubilee she says, I am grateful for the call to join the Benedictine Sisters of Yankton and for God s faithfulness in helping me live out that call. My life has been full of surprises, all of which have been blessings to me. I have enjoyed the opportunity to know, love, and serve, not only my own community, but many Sisters from other Benedictine communities. SISTER JOYCE STREFF was born to the late Henry and Joyce Streff of Salem, SD. She is the youngest of f children and was raised on the family farm. She attended St Mary s Catholic School for all 12 years. The experience of growing up in this faith community and background fostered her initial response to seek out her vocation to a religious community of Sisters. This process was fostered more with her contact with Sister Amica and the Benedictines of Sacred Heart Monastery in her high school years. Sister Joyce entered the monastery in August of 1964, made first monastic profession on June 29, 1966, and made perpetual monastic profession in June of Sister Joyce has ministered mainly in Health Care for 40 years. She was trained to be an Occupational Therapist and then trained to be a hospital chaplain. She has ministered to the people of God in Ohio, Colorado, Nebraska and South Dakota. This hospital ministry has been very rewarding and fulfilling for her, and she knows it is of service to all people. She presently works as a Board Certified Chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE. Sister Joyce claims that her faith, religious community, and her family are the heart and soul of her life. She declares, Golden Jubilarians... I would not be where I am today without my faith, family, and religious community. The 50 years have seemed to go quickly, but she is very grateful for all of the years and people she has met and the places to which she has traveled. She claims, It is with great joy and blessings to be able to celebrate 50 years as a Yankton Benedictine from Sacred Heart Monastery. SISTER KATHRYN EASLEY, grew up with faith in two key areas of her life. Having attended only Catholic schools, she was familiar with many different orders of Sisters. S. Kathryn says, I became acquainted with Benedictine Sisters who staffed parish grade school, Cathedral of the Risen Christ (then Holy Family), where I attended junior high and then returned to teach for a year after graduation from college. The sisters lived two houses away from home and walked by the house each day; I was drawn by their joy and their warm family spirit. I didn t have the Monastic words or a deep thoughtful reflection for my relationship with them at the time. They just became my friends. In addition to the influence of the Sisters themselves, Sister says, My parents and family played a significant role in my desire to become a Sister. Our parents were faith-filled witnesses of the Catholic Faith in many ways, 4

Prefer Nothing to Christ most memorable being their daily Mass attendance and their consistent involvement in and service to the Church... It was no surprise I would have their love and support in my decision to enter religious life for which I am most grateful. On choosing religious life by entering in 1964, Sister says, I knew I wanted to serve the Church, and I wanted to be a part of the Benedictines as they served. I found a joy-filled community of women, seeking Christ who were committed to prayer, the Liturgy of the Hs, the Eucharist, and service. It was a perfect fit! I am in awe and feel blessed to receive my calling to monastic life at Sacred Heart Monastery. She made first profession in Following her perpetual monastic vows, Sister Kathryn continued being involved in Catholic education as an instructor and as a principal. She taught in Lincoln and Hartington, NE; Yankton and Vermillion, SD; and 30 years in the Sioux Falls Catholic School System in Sioux Falls, SD. She was elected prioress and served from 1989 to For her, Jubilee is a celebration of God s love, presence, and guidance on her jney as a Benedictine sister. Jubilee is a celebration of her family, her Benedictine family, and her friends their love and support through these 50 years. Jubilee is a celebration of hope and joy for the years to come. Sister Kathryn shared her favorite quote from the Rule: Prefer nothing whatever to Christ and may he bring us all together to everlasting life. SISTER MARGO TSCHETTER was born in Yankton, SD, to Verdi and Hattie (Velek) Tschetter and was a student in Hoven, Tabor, and Yankton, SD. Having Yankton Benedictines as teachers influenced her toward the religious life, she joined the convent in 1964 and made first monastic profession in She graduated from Mount Marty College and then taught in Lincoln, NE, and Sioux Falls, SD. Sister Margo continued to teach and taught at Hope Preschool for 7 years and at Sacred Heart School in Yankton for 34 years. Sister Margo and S. Joelle Bauer co-founded Hope Preschool and taught in it from Since retiring, she has been helping with activities for the Care Center Sisters, tutoring people from the Yankton Abilities Building Center in Yankton, and teaching ERTH (Ecummenical Religious Training for the Handicapped program), which she co-formed 37 years ago. Throughout her life, beginning in the first grade through high school, she had Yankton Benedictines for teachers. She states, It only stands to reason that since I felt called to religious life it would be to the Yankton Benedictines. The joyful presence of these Sisters was the biggest influence in my life. As a Benedictine and a teacher, I had many opportunities in the past 45 years to plant the seeds for Benedictine men and women try to live out by following The Rule of St. Benedict. Sister Margo goes on to say, I find it hard to believe that I have lived the Benedictine life for fifty years. I thank God daily for being a Benedictine Sister at Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton. SISTER MARIETTA KERKVLIET grew up in Salem, SD, and is the middle child of seven of the late John and Elizabeth Kerkvliet. She attended St. Mary s Grade and High School, Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque, IA, and Mount Marty College in Yankton, SD. She entered Sacred Heart Monastery in August of 1964, made first monastic profession on June 29, 1966, and perpetual profession in November 25, Sister Marietta s ministries have included teaching grade school and being a Religious Education Director. She returned to the monastery to be Vocation Director. She continues to serve in various ways, including serving on the Mount Marty College Board, being Liturgical Director, and guiding Sisters in formation. She writes, The possibility of being a Sister stood in front of me every day as I was taught by the Bernadines and later the Yankton Benedictines. Prayer for vocations was among family prayers. So it was with a great deal of support that I entered Sacred Heart Monastery. Often we were invited by teachers to consider religious life, and S. Rose invited me to Sacred Heart Monastery when I was completing high school at St. Mary s in Salem. Her belief in me enabled me to 'give it a try.' When I entered, I did not know much about the differences in religious communities but found the way of Benedict to be a wonderful fit for me; it provided strong community support for prayer, work, and growth personally and spiritually. Celebrating 50 years has called me to pause and give thanks for God s presence in my life, especially in my Benedictine Sisters who have provided stability on the jney, encagement in the challenges, and role models to follow. Life lived together has been God s greatest gift to me and enables me to reach out to others in many ways unrealized when I first knocked at the door. It is with a heart full of joy and gratitude to God, my Sisters, my family, and those with whom I have ministered that I celebrate this year of Jubilee. 5

Sisters Illustrated An Adventure of a lifetime! Story from Sister Angeline Keating Reflections on Community: In my retirement years, I feel that I am well taken care of in every aspect of my life, and this includes the need to help out when and where I can. Sisters and lay staff tell me that my small contributions are appreciated. Having grown up in a community minded family, I chose a religious order where community was a priority in its living together and in its ministry. This has enriched my spiritual life immensely. Sisters meet together using what we call contemplative dialogue; we call upon the Holy Spirit to lead us as we listen to each Sister speak so the best outcome can be reached. S.Angeline showing off her Christmas gift from Sisters Eileen O Connor and Rita Mary who are now both in heaven. S. Angeline with other counselors at Guest Picture House for Women Religious. S. Angeline with family members while Picture visiting the Sphinx and Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt. As a neophyte teacher I was helped by my experienced Sisters who taught in the next classroom. In administration at MMC the entire College community of Sisters and lay people helped recruit students. S. Angeline Keating has become a part of many smaller communities at Sacred Heart Monastery: sharing in the Care Center s Eucharist daily, helping Sisters into their dining room for lunch, reading Scripture commentaries to Sisters with limited vision, assisting in the Federation Archives, substituting as receptionist, being a member of the Initial Formation group with postulants and their Directors, and cleaning the community snack room on weekends. More recently she is more focused on the Communion of Saints as she prays the Apostles Creed as part of her night prayer. She remembers we are all one in Christ, whether on earth or in heaven. Vocations Jamboree Voice by Vocations By Sister Clarice Korger, Vocation Director Where could you find a bean bag juggling nun, a friar rapping about the three vows, and a nationally known evangelist? There was a lot of energy in the room throughout the day at the Vocations Jamboree hosted at University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. College and high school students had the opportunity to interact with the various groups to ask questions about a religious vocation and get information. Sister Peggy Venteicher and I were warmly welcomed by the sisters of Annunciation Monastery in Bismarck. The monastery, along with the Diocese of Bismarck and the University of Mary, sponsored the event that ran from March 30-31st. There were over 50 different religious orders and Christian service groups represented at the jamboree. According to Dr. Peter Huff, director of the Saint John Paul II Center for University Ministry, The Vocations Jamboree highlight[ed] the many different ways dedicated women and men are serving Christ and the Church. The university conferred the Lumen Vitae medal on Bishop Robert Barron, who gave the keynote address at the Jamboree. The Vocations Jamboree was a wonderful way to get into contact with young people, who are seeking what God is calling them to in their lives. Recent Events 55 and under gathering - Beech Grove, IN By Sister Clarice Korger, Vocation Director "Collaboration is a style of performing ministry in a way that is completely based on the identification, release, and union of all the gifts in the Christian community so that the mission of Jesus Christ continues." Br. Loughlan Sofield, ST Collaboration was the overarching theme for the gathering of professed Benedictine Sisters aged 55 and under that took place in Beech Grove, IN from April 21 to 24. Six Sisters from Sacred Heart Monastery traveled to Our Lady of Grace Monastery to be part of the conference. They were there with 74 other Benedictine Sisters who are in this age group. The sisters came from monasteries around the United States and Mexico. The New Wineskins: Benedictine 55 & Under Gathering conference had as its purpose to connect Benedictine women in this age demographic for the purpose of sharing ideas, resces, hopes, dreams, and building new relationships among them. The Sisters heard from various leaders regarding the theme of collaboration and had presentations on using technology as a way to collaborate around the country and the world. The Sisters at the conference are now better equipped to collaborate as they continue the mission of Christ. 6

Open to making a difference while doing something you enjoy? 21 or older? Yes?... Sacred Heart Monstery offers a Residential Volunteer Program! For details visit yanktonbenedictines.org (bottom link under Who we are ) or call Providing single women with the opportunity to enhance their lives by sharing in the life, prayer, and ministries of Monastery. Meet Residential Volunteer: Theresa McGinn The Residential Volunteer Program welcomed a new volunteer recently - Theresa McGinn, an elementary school teacher from the Fort Lauderdale area in Florida. Although there are no religious among her family members, no one in Theresa s family was surprised when she decided to pursue a year of volunteering here in Yankton in order to discern her possible call to religious life. I had thought about it in my early years, in my 20 s and 30 s. I explored convents and talked with prioresses at that time in my life and determined that these communities were looking for someone much younger than I. About this time, my parents needed extra help assisting with my father s health needs. God always puts you where you re supposed to be at the moment. I m at that point again where I really want to be a Sister, and I ll never know if it was the right thing or not if I don t try it. Maybe it s not too late! For women like Theresa, the Residential Volunteer Program provides the opportunity for a time of discernment. She comments, The free spirit in me said, 'Give it a try!' I ve been asking lots of questions. Theresa enjoys sharing her teaching experiences with the Sisters and has found many common experiences. Theresa has adapted well to living with the Sisters and the structure of the monastic days. Theresa commented, It s a relaxed atmosphere, yet structured and disciplined, yet peaceful and prayerful. There is an indescribable calm here. No one seems to be in a hurry, everyone is happy to be doing what they are doing at the moment, not looking forward to an h from now. They are happy and present in the moment. The Residential Volunteer Program is currently working with several potential volunteers. The first weekend in April, S. Bonita and Theresa hosted two ladies from Kansas City. One is considering volunteering with the community; the other just came along for the ride. In February, S. Bonita attended a Catholic Volunteer Network Program Formation Workshop at St. Paul s College, Washington, DC. The workshop provided excellent networking opportunities and valuable reference documents in support of the program. The Service to Sisterhood Grant has also funded social media and writing workshops for Communications Coordinator, Raelynn Coldwell. Come to me my daughter..... and I will give you rest. S. Eileen O Connor OSB, 74, died on Tuesday, January 26, A wake service was held at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 29, and the funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, January 30 at 10:30, both in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the monastery cemetery. Eileen Veronica was born on July 28, 1941, the second child to Hugh and Eileen (O Shea) O Connor of Brooklyn, New York. She attended St. Agatha and St. Brendan Parochial Schools in Brooklyn graduating on June 24, She had many fond memories working with her mother cleaning house for wealthy families in Brooklyn during her growing years. Her parents were benefactors to St. Joseph Indian School at Chamberlain, South Dakota, which drew Eileen s heart to South Dakota and Sacred Heart Monastery. Eileen entered Sacred Heart Monastery August 20, 1958, and attended Mount Marty College. She was invested as a novice on June 28, 1959, and made first profession June 29, With a teaching certificate, her first mission was to St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota. She later received her BA from Mount Marty College in Yankton, and MA from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Her ministerial life was spent in teaching positions in Chamberlain and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Lincoln, Nebraska. After many years of teaching, she was asked to fill a new role at St. Therese Parish in Sioux Falls as a Pastoral Minister. Here she filled the gaps in existing ministries and attended to the needs of a growing Church. She often could be seen riding her bike to visit parishioners and always extended a welcoming smile. She was a Pastoral Minister for seventeen years until asked to be the Vocation Director and assist with Oblates at Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton. S. Eileen celebrated life and her Irish heritage at every opportunity, often dancing a jig or singing with the Sweet Adelines. Her bicycle was her preferred means of transportation, and she appreciated good books and movies. She embodied the word volunteer and would lend a helping hand in service to friend and stranger alike. She was a Big Friend and Pen Pal to children, and had a special place in her heart for people who suffered mental illness or were incarcerated. She never hesitated extending the merciful hand of Christ to another, saying, It is good for me to be here. S. Eileen is survived by her Benedictine community, her sister, Terry (Dan), six nieces and nephews and fifteen great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mary Christine. 7
