4 Introduction The Mass ITH the publication of the Divine orship Missal, some information, given in previous editions of this Ordo, is now unnecessary. The Missal indicates when loria in excelsis and Credo are to be said and which reface is to be used. Broadly speaking, the readings at Mass on Sundays, solemnities and feasts are proper, whereas the readings for ferias and memorials are as for the occurring weekday. In the rare instances where a memorial has a proper reading, this is indicated in the Lectionary. The Office salmody roper psalms are prescribed for Sundays and certain Holy Days. On other days, the psalter is read in course, as set out in the Customary of Our Lady of alsingham. salms which are regularly used for the Invitatory or Compline, for example may be omitted from the monthly scheme. The Laudate psalms (ss ) which traditionally conclude Morning rayer may be used. On ferias and memorials the Laudate psalms may be said either in full (with loria atri said only after the final psalm) or as follows: Monday and Thursday, s 148; Tuesday and Friday, s 149; ednesday and Saturday, s 150. The psalm scheme of the Divine Office may be followed. This may help particularly those who wish to use the Breviary in the morning and Evening rayer, as set out in the Customary. A table of psalms, following the Hebrew numbering, is included in this Ordo. Morning rayer At Morning rayer, the reading in bold type (drawn from the Two-Year Cycle of the Office of eadings), or the corresponding reading from the One-Year Cycle, as printed in the Divine Office, should always be read. hen this reading is drawn from the Old Testament, a reading from the New Testament may also be read, usually the ospel of the Day, traditionally read at Mattins. hen the reading in bold type, or as in the Divine Office, is from the New Testament, an Old Testament reading may be read as the First Lesson. The New Testament reading follows as the 4

5 Second Lesson. hen a New Testament reading is set, reference is also made in italics to the ospel. The practice of meditating on the ospel of the Day, even when it is not read at Morning rayer, is highly commendable. It is permissible for there to be only one reading from Scripture at Morning rayer. The second reading, following a responsory or canticle, would be a post-biblical reading, drawn from the Divine Office. In addition to the readings in the Divine Office there is an anthology of spiritual readings in the Customary, to which the Customary references in the tables generally refer. Though readings not part of the Divine Office may not displace Scripture readings, the reading in the Customary may be used at some other point, morning or evening, perhaps after the ospel Canticle or the Third Collect. Evening rayer At Evening rayer there are two readings offered, following the rayer Book pattern. They are drawn mostly from the Daily Office Lectionary of the Book of Divine orship. The practice of reading the ospel of the esurrection, or the ospel of the Day, as in the Divine Office, as the Second Lesson at Evening rayer I of Sunday, is also facilitated in these tables. The same convention of italicisation, as in the Morning rayer tables, where the ospel would be additional to a New Testament reading, is followed. 5
