3 From father jordan, o.p., Pastor my dear ones, May the grace of Our Lord be always with us! we come to the great feast of Corpus Christi the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Because I am speaking at all of the Masses this weekend, I offer you this reflection by Pope Saint John Paul II, entitled The Eucharist and our lives (October 2000): We have become Christ. For if he is the head, we are the members; he and we together are the whole man. St Augustine s bold words extol the intimate communion that is created between God and man in the mystery of the Church, a communion which, on our journey through history, finds its supreme sign in the Eucharist. The commands, Take, eat... Drink of it... (Mt 26: 26-27), which Jesus gives his disciples in that room on the upper floor of a house in Jerusalem on the last evening of his earthly life (cf. Mk 14: 15), are rich in meaning. The universal symbolic value of the banquet offered in bread and wine (cf. Is 25: 6) already suggests communion and intimacy. Other more explicit elements extol the Eucharist as a banquet of friendship and covenant with God. For, as the Catechism of the Catholic Church recalls, it is at the same time, and inseparably, the sacrificial memorial in which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated, and the sacred banquet of communion with the Lord s body and blood (CCC, n. 1382). Just as in the Old Testament the movable shrine in the desert was called the tent of meeting, that is, of the encounter between God and his people and of brethren in faith among themselves, the ancient Christian tradition called the Eucharistic celebration the synaxis, i.e., meeting. In it the Church s inner nature is revealed, a community of those summoned to the synaxis to celebrate the gift of the One who is offering and offered: participating in the Holy Mysteries, they become kinsmen of Christ, anticipating the experience of divinization in the now inseparable bond linking divinity and humanity in Christ (Orientale lumen, n. 10). This communion with Christ thus produces an inner transformation of the believer. St. Cyril of Alexandria effectively describes this event, showing its resonance in life and in history: Christ forms us in his image so that the features of his divine nature will shine in us through sanctification, justice and a good life in conformity with virtue. The beauty of this image shines in us who are in Christ, when we show ourselves to be good people through our deeds. Let us express our desire for the divine life offered in Christ in the warm tones of a great theologian of the Armenian Church, Gregory of Narek (10th century): It is not for his gifts, but for the Giver that I always long. It is not glory to which I aspire, but the Glorified One whom I desire to embrace... It is not rest that I seek, but the face of the One who gives rest that I implore. It is not for the wedding feast, but for desire of the Bridegroom that I languish (XII Prayer). you are with me at the altar! O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee! i n the lord, Let us offer... in the warm tones of a great theologian...gregory of Narek, It is not for his gifts, but for the Giver that I always long. It is not glory to which I aspire, but the Glorified One whom I desire to embrace...it is not rest that I seek, but the face of the One who gives rest that I implore. It is not for the wedding feast, but for desire of the Bridegroom that I languish.

Prostrate, we adore this great mystery that contains God s new and definitive covenant with humankind in Christ. pope st. john paul ii june Devotion The Sacred Heart of Jesus during the month of june, the Church directs our attention to the example of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who loved us even unto His death on the cross for our sins. One invocation we can pray is that of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque: O Heart of love, I put all my trust in Thee; for I fear all things from my own weakness, but I hope for all things from Thy goodness. year of Consecreated Life Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration Let us hasten to Jesus, present on the altar, and there, united in love, let us place our gift and our petitions at His feet. Blessed Mother Maria Theresia Bonzel founded the congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in Olpe, Germany, in From the very day the community was founded, Mother established Perpetual Adoration in the local convent chapel. The files of her beatification attest to the love and strength she found therein: She had grown under the soft light of the Eucharistic sun. Again and again she went to the hidden God to find light, courage and strength. The Eucharistic Lord must be discovered by us anew and must be proclaimed as an enabler of selfless love. Flowing from prayer, Mother Maria Theresia put herself and the Sisters at the service of children, the sick, and the poor. For over 150 years, the Sisters have remained faithful to their charism of perpetual adoration as well as the active apostolates of healthcare and education. Currently, the Sisters serve primarily in schools and hospitals in Indiana and south suburban Chicago. In doing so, they follow in the footsteps of Jesus who spent His public life praying, teaching, healing and ministering to others. For more information, Sr. M. 7 dfhcmnydominican Friars Health Care Ministry of New York The Eucharist, the Church, and the Hospital by rev. jonah pollock, o.p., Associate Director of Dominican Friars Health Care Ministry of New York The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. With these words, Pope St. John Paul II began his 2003 encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia. He goes on to explain, In a variety of ways, she [the Church] joyfully experiences the constant fulfillment of the promise: Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age (Matt 28:20), but in the Holy Eucharist, through the changing of bread and wine into the body and blood of the Lord, she rejoices in this presence with unique intensity. Ever since Pentecost, when the Church, the People of the New Covenant, began her pilgrim journey towards her heavenly homeland, the Divine Sacrament has continued to mark the passing of her days, filling them with confident hope (EE 1). The Pope goes on to discuss the way in which the communion we share in receiving the Eucharist builds up the communion of the Church. The Eucharist thus appears as the culmination of all the sacraments in perfecting our communion with God the Father by the identification with his only-begotten Son through the working of the Holy Spirit (EE 34). He calls the Eucharist the supreme sacramental manifestation of communion in the Church (EE 38) and says, The Eucharist creates communion and fosters communion (EE 40). The Eucharist gives life to the Church by uniting Christians more perfectly with Christ and with one another. When we celebrate the Eucharistic sacrifice, receive the Eucharist in Holy Communion, or adore the Eucharistic presence of Christ in prayer, we are made the body of Christ by the body of Christ. That is, we are constituted as the Church by our common participation in the Eucharist. The Eucharist creates communion. It unites us with God and with one another. It brings us into communion with the whole Church and not merely with the assembly of those present. Given the very nature of ecclesial communion and its relation to the sacrament of the Eucharist, it must be recalled that the Eucharistic Sacrifice, while always offered in a particular community, is never the celebration of that community alone. In fact, the community, in receiving the Eucharistic presence of the Lord, receives the entire gift of salvation and shows... that it is the image and true presence of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church (EE 39). The Eucharist not only unites the individual Christian with the Church, it also unites the particular church with the universal Church. When we bring Holy Communion to the sick, we extend to the sick persons the communion of the local church The Church of St. Catherine of Siena. By receiving Holy Communion in the Eucharist as consecrated and sacrificed in the worship of our community, the sick persons are united to our local church, are made sharers in our assembly. But the Eucharist is never the celebration of our local community alone. Through communion in our Eucharistic Lord, we receive his full presence and are part of the universal Church that is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. This is the fuller communion that the sick person enters into in receiving the Eucharist. The Church draws her life from the Eucharist and the sick person draws her life from the Eucharist by which she shares in the communion of Christ and his Church. Last year, Dominican Friars Health Care Ministry of New York extended that treasure to more than 30,000 sick persons and family members. Every day, Dominican Friars and Health Care Ministry volunteers offer Holy Communion to scores of patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center and Hospital for Special Surgery. We give them the Eucharist; but at the same time we give them the Church. Confined to the hospital, the sick person is separated physically from the local community in which the Eucharistic sacrifice is offered. However, by receiving the Eucharist, whether physically or spiritually, the sick person is brought into communion with the worship of the assembly and the communion of the Church universal. Though the Eucharist and the communion it creates, the sick person in the hospital shows himself to be the image and true presence of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church Through communion in our Eucharistic Lord, we receive his full presence and are part of the universal Church that is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. This is the fuller communion that the sick person enters into in receiving the Eucharist. DFHCMNY Staff: Rev. Jordan Kelly, O.P., Exec. Director Rev. Jonah Pollock, O.P., Assoc.
