8 Epistle Priest: Reader: Let us attend. How great are Thy works, O Lord! In wisdom hast Thou made them all.. Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul! Priest: Wisdom. Reader: The Reading is from The Acts of the Holy Apostles (11:19-30) Priest: Let us attend. IN THOSE DAYS: the Disciples, who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen, traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the Word to none except Jews. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, upon coming to Antioch, spoke to the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number that believed turned to the Lord. News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad; and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose; for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a large company was added to the Lord. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church, and taught a large company of people; and in Antioch the Disciples were for the first time called Christians. Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world; and this took place in the days of Claudius. And the Disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brethren who lived in Judea; and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. Holy Gospel The reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John (4:5-42) AT THAT TIME: Jesus came to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob s well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as He was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink. For His Disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to Him, How is it that Thou, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God, and
9 Who it is that is saying to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water. The woman said to Him, Sir, Thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Art Thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle? Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst forever; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. The woman answered Him, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You are right in saying, I have no husband ; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly. The woman said to Him, Sir, I perceive that Thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and Thou sayest that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming [He Who is called Christ]; when He comes, He will tell us all things. Jesus said to her, I Who speak to you am He. Just then His Disciples came. They marveled that He was talking with a woman, but none said, What dost Thou wish? or, Why art Thou talking with her? So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people, Come, see a man Who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ? They went out of the city and were coming to Him. Meanwhile the Disciples besought Him, saying, Rabbi, eat. But He said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know. So the Disciples said to one another, Has anyone brought Him food? Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him Who sent Me, and to accomplish His work. Do you not say, There are yet four months, then comes the harvest? I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor. Many Samaritans from that city believed in Him because of the woman s testimony, He said to me all that I ever did. So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. And many more believed because of His words. They said to the woman, It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world. May God Be With You!
10 The Saints Of The Day May 13, 2012* THE HOLY FEMALE MARTYR GLYCERIA Glyceria was the daughter of a Roman governor. Becoming impoverished after her father's death, Glyceria settled in Trajanopolis in Thrace. During the reign of the nefarious Emperor Antoninus, Glyceria was taken to offer sacrifices to the idol of Jupiter [Zeus]. She traced the sign of the cross on her forehead and when the Prefect Sabinus questioned her concerning her lamp, (for all of them carried lamps in their hands), Glyceria pointed to the cross on her forehead and said: "This is my lamp." As a result of her prayer lightning struck the idol and smashed it to pieces. The prefect became angry and ordered her flogged and thrown into prison. The prefect sealed the doors to the prison, determined to starve the virgin to death. However, an angel of God appeared to Glyceria and administered heavenly food to her. After a period of time, when the prefect thought that the virgin must have died from hunger, he opened the doors of the prison and was astonished when he saw her healthy, radiant and joyful. Witnessing this miracle, Laodicius, the jailer confessed Christ the Lord and was immediately beheaded. After that Glyceria was thrown into a fiery furnace but remained unharmed by the fire. Standing in the midst of the fire and, remembering the miracle of the three youths in the Babylonian furnace, Glyceria praised the Lord. Finally, she was thrown to the lions and, praying to God, this holy virgin gave up her soul to the Lord for Whom she bravely endured many tortures. She suffered honorably in the year 177 A.D. A healing oil [myrrh] emitted from her relics which healed the sick of the gravest diseases. THE VENERABLES JOHN, EUTHYMIUS, GEORGE AND GABRIEL OF THE MONASTERY IVIRON [MT. ATHOS] All four venerables were the founders of the famous Iberian [Georgian] monastery on the Holy Mt. Athos. At first, St. John lived a life of asceticism in the Lavra [Monastery] of Athanasius and, after that, founded his monastery, Iviron. John died in the year 998 A.D. Euthymius and George translated the Holy Scripture into the Georgian language. Euthymius died in the year 1029 A.D. and George died in 1066 A.D. Gabriel was found worthy to receive the miracleperforming Icon of the Mother of God which arrived at the monastery by way of the sea. REFLECTION Concerning the power of death and the power of the Cross of Christ, St. Athanasius writes: "Whose death ever drove out demons? And whose death have the demons been afraid of as the death of Christ? Where the Name of Christ is only invoked, there, every demon is driven out. Who in such a measure tamed spiritual passions in men that the prostitutes live a chaste life and murderers do not use the sword anymore and the fearful become courageous? If not the Faith of Christ? If not the sign of the Cross? And who else has so convinced men in immortality as the Cross of Christ and the resurrection of the Body of Christ? The death of the Sinless One and the Cross of the Lover of men have brought a greater and more lasting victory than all the earthly kings with many multi-millions of armies. Which army was able to defeat a single demon? Meanwhile, only the mention of the Name of the Crucified One on the Cross peels to flight the army of demons. O, if all Christians would know what treasure they have in the Name of Christ, and what kind of weapon they have in the Cross of Christ! To God Be Glory and Praise Always! Amen. *Taken from The Prologue from Ochrid by Saint Nicholas (Velimirovich)
11 May 9, 2012 Spiritual Bums By Father James C. Meena Word Magazine, May 1981 I would like to share with you some reminiscences of the past. When I was a child, my parents would always admonish me when I would leave home for some social occasion, Remember who you are and always make us proud of you. Whenever I would forget that admonition one or the other of them would say to me, usually in anger, We are not raising bums in this family. We are raising decent people. I remember some of the movies and radio stories of those days where parents who were raising children who were lazy and did not want to go out and get a job or who felt that the world owed them a living saying to them, I didn t raise you to be a bum, I raised you to be a good person, get out and get a job, take care of yourself. For some reason or the other during the course of this past month, that word bum kept going through my mind in recollection. Maybe God was trying to inspire me to say something about it in relationship to the sad reality that on the Sunday after a major Feast, whether it s one day or three or four days following, the Church is almost always half empty. Yet after the climax of the Holy season, when the Church was filled with people and the communion lines extended to the doors of the Church and beyond and when the liturgy was extended in time because there were so many people coming to the chalice and when we were concerned about hearing all the confessions before Liturgy and having enough time to do this and then to come to Church the following Sunday and witness all of those good people who came to the chalice absenting themselves from the same Eucharist and the same celebration, I wonder if God does not want me to say; We are not raising spiritual bums in this Godly household. God does not punish us immediately for our indolence but I think somehow he keeps a record of those items when we put me first and Him second. It is coming to Church and carrying with us into our daily lives that which we learn here, expressing it in our relationship to other people, expressing the gospel of love and hope and fulfillment, the gospel of faith, the gospel of joy to a joyless world, a world that has reached such a degree of faithlessness that it is a matter of great concern. It is for this that we come to Church, it is for this that we take the Sacraments and it is for this that we hear the Word of God. Unlike generations past, we have the gift and the ability to read the gospels; we don t have to come to Church to hear them read. Most of us have the ability to read intelligent sermons and expositions on theology and doctrine, so we really don t have to come to Church to get these things if we don t want to. We come to Church because this is home base for us, our spiritual household. It is here that we become aware of the fullness of Christ s unity, the reality of His Family. Nowhere else can we feel the concept of Family of God except when we come together in worship as His community and when we make manifest in works the things that we learn and are inspired to do in times of worship. I think this is what makes the difference between spiritual bums and Saints. I can hear my parents saying to me as a boy; We don t want you to be a bum, and I can hear our Lord saying the same thing. I can hear our blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary, and the Church, saying to us, Children I don t want you to be bums, I want you to be Saints. And that is not a great deal to ask because, you see, the Church is the communion of Saints, of holy people living on the face of this earth and holy people who have now migrated beyond the limitations of this life. It is a communion of Saints in the Church Militant with the communion of Saints in the Church Triumphant. It is a Church of holy people. Anytime we say, me first Lord and you second, that is risky. Only when we put Him first do we attain to that Saintliness that is acceptable to Him. Think about it the next time you are tempted to be a spiritual bum Saint Isidore of Rostov, Fool for Christ May 14 Troparion of St Isidore of Rostov Tone 4 Illumined by grace, O divinely-wise Isidore, thou didst chastely and patiently run the course of thy life. And after death thy splendid life has made thee famous: for thou didst shower grace of healing on all who faithfully venerate thy tomb. O blessed Isidore, pray to Christ our God to save our souls. Kontakion of St Isidore of Rostov Tone 8 Let us praise him who is a champion and wonder among the righteous, and who has received the gift of wonderworking from Christ. We see that thou hast boldness before the Holy Trinity. Pray that we thy servants may be delivered from misfortunes that we may cry to thee: Rejoice, O divinely wise Isidore.
