The Collect of the Day Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. People Amen. Then all are seated The Word of God The First Lesson Deuteronomy 26:1-11 When you come into the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance, and have taken possession of it, and live in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God gives you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place which the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, I declare this day to the Lord your God that I have come into the land which the Lord swore to our fathers to give us. Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand, and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God. And you shall make response before the Lord your God, A wandering Aramean was my father; and he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. And the Egyptians treated us harshly, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage. Then we cried to the Lord the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice, and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror, with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which thou, O Lord, hast given me. And you shall set it down before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God; and you shall rejoice in all the good which the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A period of silence follows the Lesson 5

Psalm 91:1-2, 9-16 Qui habitat The Psalm is read by the Lector and Congregation, alternating by whole verse He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, * abides under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall say to the Lord, You are my refuge and my stronghold, * my God in whom I put my trust. Because you have made the Lord your refuge, * and the Most High your habitation, There shall no evil happen to you, * neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over you, * to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you in their hands, * lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; * you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet. Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver him; * I will protect him, because he knows my Name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; * I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him to honor. With long life will I satisfy him, * and show him my salvation. The Second Lesson Romans 10:8b-13 The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. For, every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A period of silence follows the Lesson 6

All stand with the Celebrant for the reading of the Gospel The Gospel Luke 4:1-13 Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit for forty days in the wilderness, tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days; and when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. And Jesus answered him, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone. And the devil took him up, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, To you I will give all this authority and their glory; for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it shall all be yours. And Jesus answered him, It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. And he took him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; for it is written, He will give his angels charge of you, to guard you, and On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. And Jesus answered him, It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God. And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Peter James Speropulos An extended silence follows the Sermon, all seated Following the silence, all stand with the Celebrant and say together The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: 7

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. All kneel Litany of Healing The Celebrant introduces the Litany with this bidding Let us name before God those for whom we offer our prayers. 9 V. Grant to all who seek your guidance, and to all who are lonely, anxious, or despondent, a knowledge of your will and an awareness of your presence; R. Hear us, O Lord of life. V. Mend broken relationships, and restore those in emotional distress to soundness of mind and serenity of spirit; R. Hear us, O Lord of life. V. Bless physicians, nurses, and all others who minister to the suffering, granting them wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience; R. Hear us, O Lord of life. V. Grant to the dying peace and a holy death, and uphold by the grace and consolation of your Holy Spirit those who are bereaved; R. Hear us, O Lord of life. V. Restore to wholeness whatever is broken by human sin, in our lives, in our nation, and in the world; R. Hear us, O Lord of life. V. You are the Lord who does wonders: R. You have declared your power among the peoples. V. With you, O Lord, is the well of life: R. And in your light we see light. V. Hear us, O Lord of life: R. Heal us, and make us whole. Let us pray. A period of silence follows The Celebrant concludes the Prayers with this Collect O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. People Amen. The Celebrant now invites those who wish to receive the laying on of hands (and anointing) to come forward V. Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us; R. Save us, and help us, we humbly beseech you, O Lord. 9

The Celebrant says the following prayer over those who have come forward O God of peace, you have taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength: By the might of your Spirit lift us, we pray, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. People Amen. The Celebrant then lays hands on each person (and, having dipped a thumb in the oil of the sick, makes the sign of the cross on their foreheads), and says the following I lay my hands upon you and anoint you with oil in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, beseeching our Lord Jesus Christ to sustain you with his presence, to drive away all sickness of body and spirit, and to give you that victory of life and peace which will enable you to serve him both now and evermore. People Amen. The Peace All stand Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the Bread and a period of silence is kept; then is said Celebrant People Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Invitation and Ministration of Communion All Christians baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are invited to receive the consecrated Body and Blood of Christ. The beginning of Passover is determined by the first full moon after the vernal equinox, which can occur any day of the week. In an effort to ensure that Easter occurs on a Sunday, the Council of Nicaea, in 325 A.D., determined that Easter shall be on the first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox.
