2 Welcome to St. Mark s Episcopal Church, we are glad you are here! Please complete a Visitor card and place it in the offering plate. St. Mark s is a traditional church for contemporary people and we believe that God s love is for everyone. This is an open-minded congregation where we actively seek, question and wonder about our faith. We also believe that we are the hands of Christ, and mission work within our community is a vital part of what we do here. AN OPEN TABLE All are welcome to receive communion here. If you need a gluten-free wafer, please let the minister know when you are at the altar rail. You are invited to come forward and kneel as you are able to receive the bread. You may drink from the cup or take the wine by intinction, or dipping the wafer into the cup. If you prefer a blessing only, cross your arms over your chest. SUNDAY WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR CHILDREN Liturgy of the Word for Children is held at 10 a.m. for children ages 4 through 5 th grade in our smaller John Roberts Chapel. Children enter our Nave during the processional hymn and return from the chapel during the Peace so that they may share the Eucharist with their families. Liturgy of the Word for Children is a special time for these children, and they sing, pray, craft and hear the Gospel. FORMATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH Children in kindergarten through 6 th grade meet at 6 p.m. for dinner and fellowship, then split up by age. Classes end at 7:30 p.m. Youth in grades 7-12 meet at 5:30pm on Wednesdays. ADULT FORMATION AT 9:00AM SUNDAY MORNINGS IN THE PARISH HALL This is an Adult Education Group that allows us to engage in conversation, reflect on the diverse points of scripture and go deeper into our faith. NURSERY SERVICES The nursery is located in the short hallway between the Narthex and the Parish Hall. Nursery is provided for children birth through age 3 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The friendly, two-room nursery suite is staffed by a wonderful group of compassionate caregivers who are church members and mothers, too! RESTROOMS Are located to the left of the main entrance, through the Parish Offices door. COFFEE BAR In between the services, enjoy a cup of coffee at our coffee bar, located in the front left corner of the Narthex. Amen. THE LESSONS FIRST LESSON A Reading from Isaiah 6:1-13 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory."the pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had

4 been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" And he said, "Go and say to this people: `Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.' Make the mind of this people dull, and stop their ears, and shut their eyes, so that they may not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and comprehend with their minds, and turn and be healed. "Then I said, "How long, O Lord?" And he said: "Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate; until the Lord sends everyone far away, and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land. Even if a tenth part remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled. "The holy seed is its stump. Lector The Word of the Lord. SECOND LESSON A Reading from A Reading from 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you--unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them--though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 6 Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people." When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. SERMON The Rev. Joshua Daniel, Ph.D. THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

7 and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The people stand or kneel. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, and We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; The continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mark, Mary and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE All are invited to share in the bread and wine of holy communion. To receive the bread, place one hand in the other with palms up and extend them to the minister distributing the bread. To receive the wine, please assist the minister with the cup, grasping the base and guiding the cup to your lips; or you may dip the bread in the cup. If you choose not to receive the bread or the wine but instead receive a blessing, cross your arms over your chest. POST COMMUNION PRAYER and Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage

Confirmation Classes for 2019 If you are considering becoming a confirmed member of St. Mark s, or if you just want to learn more about the Episcopal Church, please register for confirmation classes. You may -mail Father Joshua at joshua.daniel@stmarksjonesboro.org by February 17. Classes will be held for 6 consecutive weeks. Date and times will be announced after Feb. 17 when registration is completed to work with schedules. Two Saints Kitchen On February 2, 2019 Team #10 served homemade chile, cheese, fitos, and sour cream, with cookies for dessert to 32 guest, 17 seconds, and 14 to go plates. EYC is busy preparing for WinterStar. It is our spring Diocesan Youth Retreat at Camp Mitchell. It costs $120 per child. We're preparing a few fundraisers this month to help send us to Camp. The first will be our famous Parent's Night Out. EYC will host PNO on Feb 16th from 5-9. This will give Parents an opportunity to go on a date for Valentine's Day while kids are safely having fun with us. We take kids of all ages and will separate into age groups. We will have age appropriate activities planned. We will eat pizza and cookies. Cost is $20 for 1st child and $10 for siblings. The second fundraiser planned is a dinner hosted by EYC. On Thursday February 21st we will cook and serve a BBQ dinner. EYC will cook and serve. We have BBQ sandwiches, beans, fries and chicken strips for kids. (if desired) While we would love to have to you eat here and let us serve you and clean up after you, We will also send home a family take out meal if you prefer. Both of these are great opportunities to support the youth group at St. Marks. We really appreciate it. 13 Winterstar, the diocese annual spring retreat for youth in the 6th 12th grades, will be held Friday, March 8 Sunday, March 10 at Camp Mitchell. The weekend begins with registration on Friday at 7 p.m. and ends Sunday at 11 a.m. There will be games, music, worship services, hiking, sports, hammocking and even more camp goodness. Register now on the EYC page. Altar Flowers for If you would like to donate flowers for the altar in honor or memory of a loved one for 2019, there is a sign up sheet in the Narthex. Cost is $35.00 For Our Children We are now inviting the children to take a more active role in the church s offering. We re asking our kids to bring a can of food or some other non-perishable item so that during the offertory they can bring the food to altar as an offering. We ll then donate the food to Helping Neighbors. So if you have a child, help remind them to bring a can of food! Diocesan Events Diocesan Convention 2019, February 15 16, Little Rock, Arkansas, Friday s events will all take place at Trinity Cathedral; Saturday s at Episcopal Collegiate Lower School Choral Evensong at St. Mark s in Little Rock The Choir of St Mark s Episcopal Church will sing Choral Evensong on Feb. 10, at 5 p.m. The Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis will be sung to the setting in F by George Dyson. The anthem will be the Beatitudes by Arvo Part, a modern choral classic. Communion will be administered from the reserved sacrament after the service. A Classic Valentine Concert at St. Luke s, NLR The Johannes Trio will perform on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 7 p.m., at St. Luke s in North Little Rock. They will play Trio No. 1 for Piano, Violin, and Cello by Johannes Brahms and Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano by Jean Francaix. A reception with the performers will follow. The performance is free and open to the public. Becoming Wholehearted Half-Day Retreat This four-hour retreat based on the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola will be led by Tom Elliott, author of The Intimacy You Desireand owner of DeepWardly Spiritual Direction Services. You will learn how several of Ignatius' meditations can help you be more wholehearted and

14 authentic, especially in the most challenging areas of your life. And you'll enjoy time in personal prayer. The retreat will be held Saturday, March 9, 9 a.m. 1 p.m., at St. Mark s in Little Rock. The topic of the guest speaker, the Rev. Dr. Stuart Hoke, will be Our Shelter From The Stormy Blast. Hoke, formerly a priest at Trinity Church Wall Street, will give his eyewitness account of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the recovery efforts that followed.
