The First Aid Kit and the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) are located outside the church office door, immediately behind the sanctuary. Fire Extinguishers are located in the Sacristy and in the Narthex. If you are interested in membership to this parish or desire a call from the Pastor, please indicate this to an usher or to the Pastor. In Lent we will frequently hear a word unfamiliar to English-speaking Christians, but one which, if we learn to use and understand it, will open our hearts and minds to the celebration of our redemption. The word is pascha, from which the term Paschal Triduum comes which is the name for the three days between Maundy Thursday and Easter Saturday. It is the ancient biblical word for Passover and is used in the Holy Scriptures both for the exodus/passover event which saved Israel in the time of Moses, and for the death and resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate at Easter and on every Lord s Day. Indeed in many languages the name of Easter is some variation of pascha see particularly French, Italian, and Spanish. s and theologians speak of the Paschal Mystery, a phrase heard often in the liturgy during Lent and Eastertide. Its meaning is brought home by William Pregnall, former Dean of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. He describes the Paschal Mystery as the saving event by which God in all times and in all places saves the human race. It has been specially manifested at four points in history: 1. In the Passover/Exodus, which freed Israel from slavery in Egypt, and journeying to the promised land; 2. In the death and resurrection of Jesus, which saves us from slavery to sin and death and leads us into the promised land of God s kingdom; 3. In Holy Baptism, when we each become participants in the dying and rising of Jesus, and partakers of its benefits; 4. In our participation in the Eucharist, where all of these past events become present to us again and we are active participants in them. Lent is not a gloomy time, a sad time, or a depressing Restrooms are available on the first and second floors of time for those who are remembering what God has the Education Building. done for them. Our self-examination, which reveals our sin, prepares us to recognize our need for God. Then we gather Sunday by Sunday in the liturgy where our story as the people of God reminds us that God has met and still meets our need. Our fasting and self-denial give us the resources with which we can join Christ in his struggle against evil and death. oining him in that struggle, we also join him in his victory. 3 The Preparation for Worship All worshipers are invited to remain reverently silent before the service, and to join fervently in prayer, enthusiastically in praise, and heartily in song during the service. Tenebrae, which is a Latin word meaning "shadows," has been observed in the church of Jesus Christ since the fourth century. On this Good Friday we remember the death of Jesus and recall his seven last words on the cross. As we remember the last words, we will extinguish the candles on the communion table, one by one. The gradual extinguishing of the candles will be accompanied by prayers, hymns, choral anthems, and readings from Scripture. Following the final scripture reading, the Christ candle will be removed briefly from the church to signify Christ's death. The Christ candle will be brought back into the church as a foretaste of the resurrection that we will celebrate on Easter. Out of respect for the liturgy we are about to celebrate and those sitting around you, help us create sacred space by powering down your cell phones and electronic devices. The season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. As we prepare our hearts and minds for worship this morning, you are invited to meditate on the words of Psalm 51 and to pray silently the Prayer of Preparation. THE SILENT PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; According to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, And put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. Psalm 51 Personal prayer in preparation for worship: Prepare my heart, O God, to accept your Word. Silence in me any voice but your own, that hearing, I may also obey your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Liturgy begins with the music of the organ. The organ voluntary is a veil drawn reverently between the cares of the week and the time of worship where all are welcome to experience the presence of God with the people of God. Through its power and brilliance may you feel the majesty and glory of God, and in its quietness, His peace. THE OPENING VOLUNTARIES Chorale ERBARM DICH MEIN, O HERRE GOTT, BWV 721 J. S. Bach ( ) Have mercy on me, Lord my God, of kindness Thou hast evermore, Cleanse my offenses with Thy blood, I own my sin, it grieves me sore. I have sinned against Thy whole command, this truth confronts me constantly; Before Thee evil cannot stand, and Thou art just to punish me. Elegy (Hommage à César Franck) Derek Remeš (b.1988) Chorale O MENSCH, BEWEIN, BWV 622 J. S. Bach ( ) O Man, lament your great sin, for the sake of which Christ left his Father s bosom and came to earth. Of a pure, gentle virgin Jesus was born for us; He wanted to become the Mediator. He gave life to the dead and put aside all sickness, until the time arrived that He should be sacrificed for us. He bore the heavy burden of our sins stretched out upon the cross. All you who pass this way, look and see the suffering of our Savior. All you who pass this way, look and see the sorrow of Jesus Christ. Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. 5 Celebrant THE OPENING VERSICLES AND APOSTOLIC GREETING Blessed be the God of our salvation, Who bears our burdens and forgives our sins, Who creates us in love, And redeems us in mercy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. THE LITANY OF REMEMBRANCE Let us remember Jesus: who, though rich, became poor and dwelt among us; who was mighty in deed, healing the sick and the troubled; who, as a teacher to his disciples, was their companion and servant. May we always be grateful for Jesus Christ, that he died so we might have life everlasting. Let us remember Jesus: who prayed for the forgiveness of those who rejected him and for the perfecting of those who received him; who loved all people and prayed for them, even if they denied and rejected him who hated sin. May we always be grateful for Jesus Christ, that he died so we might have life everlasting. Let us remember Jesus, who humbled himself, obedient unto the cross. God has exalted him who has redeemed us from the bondage of sin and given us new freedom. May we always be grateful for Jesus Christ, that he died so we might have life everlasting. THE COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Merciful God, as we remember how your son Jesus bore our sins in his body on the cross, how seven times he spoke, seven words of love, we ask you to bless our hearing. As we recall how all three hours his silence cried for mercy on the souls of all, we ask you to help us to understand the mystery of your love, and make us into a people who are ever more worthy of it; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. 6 The First Word Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. The sit THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT LUKE 23:33-34 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, the twenty-third chapter. Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one! 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself! 38 There was also an inscription over him, This is the King of the Jews. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, touch us with your hands which the sins of the world pierced with the nails and forgive our sins. Whether we sin out of ignorance or intention, be merciful to us and grant us your acceptance and peace. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. THE ANTHEM The Parish Choir Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Sometimes it causes me to tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Words and Music: Traditional Spiritual; arranged by Raymond H. 7 The Second Word Today you will be with me in Paradise. THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT LUKE 23:39-42 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, the twenty-third chapter. One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us! 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. 42 Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, as you looked upon the thief on the cross, look even upon us that we may confess our sins and ask humbly, Lord, remember us when you come into your kingdom. Enable us by the Holy Spirit to repent and to receive your grace in this world and in the world to come. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. 8 The Third Word Woman, behold your Son! Behold your mother! THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT JOHN 19:23-27 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, the nineteenth chapter. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it. This was to fulfill what the scripture says, They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots. 25 And that is what the soldiers did. Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, Woman, here is your son. 27 Then he said to the disciple, Here is your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Blessed Savior, who in your hours of greatest suffering expressed compassion for your mother and made arrangements for her care, grant that we who seek to follow your example may show our concern for the needs of others, reaching out to provide for those who suffer in any way. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. 9 The Fourth Word My God, My God, why have your forsaken me? THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT MATTHEW 27:45-49 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the twenty-seventh chapter. From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. a 46 And about three o clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, This man is calling for Elijah. 48 At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Almighty God, who forsook your Son upon the cross showing the world your judgment upon human sin and guilt, grant us, upon hearing his cry, the grace to know and believe that we will never be forsaken, that he is present with us even to the end of the age. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. THE ANTHEM How beautiful the hands that served the wine and the bread and the sons of the earth. How beautiful the feet that walked the long dusty roads and the hill to the cross. How beautiful is the body of Christ. How beautiful the heart the bled, that took all my sin and bore it instead. How beautiful the tender eyes that chose to forgive and never despise. How beautiful is the body of Christ. How beautiful the feet that bring the sound of good news and the love of the King. How beautiful the hands that serve the wine and the bread and the sons of the earth. How beautiful is the body of Christ. 10 The Fifth Word I thirst. THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT JOHN 19:28-29 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, the nineteenth chapter. After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), I am thirsty. 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, whose lips were dry and whose throat was parched, grant us the water of life that we who thirst after righteousness may find it quenched by your love and mercy, leading us to bring this same relief to others. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. THE ANTHEM The Parish Choir; Christina McDonald, Cello Jesus, hanging on the cross, my heart would share your pain, there in labor hang with you till all are born again. On the wood of the cross hung my Savior, my friend. Now I come, now I am here, I adore and give praise to my Lord without end. Once I touched your wounded feet, my fingers in the nail; there I saw the wine of God cupped in the holy grail. On the wood of the cross hung my Savior, my friend. Now I come, now I am here, I adore and give praise to my Lord without end. When I saw your wounded side, my heart reached out to share; all your flesh was torn and wide, and all our pain was there. On the wood of the cross hung my Savior, my friend. Now I come, now I am here, I adore and give praise to my Lord without end. Jesus, hung from broken hands, O man of wounded heart, let me touch your wounded feet and in your death be part. On the wood of the cross hung my Savior, my friend. Now I come, now I am here, I adore and give praise to my Lord without end. Words: Frances Teresa; based on Saint Mark 15:34 Music: Chris de Silva THE SOLEMN LITURGY FOR GOOD FRIDAY Page 10 SAINT JAMES CHURCH, ELCA

The Sixth Word It is finished. THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT JOHN 19:30-37 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint John, the nineteenth chapter. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, It is finished. Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35 (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.) 36 These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, None of his bones shall be broken. 37 And again another passage of scripture says, They will look on the one whom they have pierced. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, who finished the work that you were sent to do, enable us by your Holy Spirit to be faithful to our call. Grant us strength to bear our crosses and endure our sufferings, even unto death. Enable us to live and love so faithfully that we also become good news to the world, joining your witness. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. THE ANTHEM The Parish Choir; Christina McDonald, Cello Behold the Savior of mankind nailed to the shameful tree; how vast the love that him inclined to bleed and die for thee! It is finished, the battle s over. God s plan is now complete. Precious Jesus, O my Savior, gave his life for you and me. Tis done; the precious ransom s paid; Receive my Soul! He cries. See where he bows his sacred head; he bows his head and dies! It is finished, the battle s over. God s plan is now complete. Precious Jesus, O my Savior, gave his life for you and me. But soon he ll break death s envious chain, and in full glory shine. O Lamb of God, was ever pain, was ever love, like thine? It is finished, the battle s over. God s plan is now complete. Precious Jesus, O my Savior, gave his life for you and me. Words: Samuel Wesley and Wes Cameron Music: Wes Cameron THE SOLEMN LITURGY FOR GOOD FRIDAY Page 11 SAINT JAMES CHURCH, ELCA

The Seventh Word Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit. THE HOLY GOSPEL, SAINT LUKE 23:44-49 A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Luke, the twenty-third chapter. It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 while the sun s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. Having said this, he breathed his last. 47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, Certainly this man was innocent. 48 And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. 49 But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE COLLECT Let us pray. Father, into whose hands your Son Jesus Christ commended his spirit, grant that we too, following his example, may in all life and at the moment of our death entrust our lives into your faithful hands of love. In the name of Jesus who gave his life for us all. THE EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLE We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world. At this time, the Christ candle is removed from the church as a symbol of Christ s death. THE ANTHEM The Parish Choir Behold the wounds in Jesus hands, the marks upon his side. Then ponder whom he meant to save when on the cross he died. We cannot see the love of God which saves us from the fall, yet know that Christ from wood and nails built mansions for us all. Behold the outstretched hands of Christ, our God, who came to save, whose love and grace redeems our souls and lifts us from the grave. Though bruised and battered as we stray his guiding hands caress, he washes and anoints with oil then in his arms we rest. Behold the wounds in Jesus hands, look to your Lord and live. He yearns to bless you with his love and all your sins forgive. Oh, empty is the heart of man when it is filled with sin. Come, open wide your broken heart and let your Savior in! Behold his wounded hands and feet! Come touch and see and feel the wounds and marks that you may know his love for you is real. Then as you fall to worship him and wash his feet in tears, your Savior takes you in his arms and quiets all your fears. Words: John V. Pearson Music: David R. Naylor The Christ candle is now brought back into the church as a foretaste of the resurrection that we will celebrate on Easter. THE SOLEMN LITURGY FOR GOOD FRIDAY Page 12 SAINT JAMES CHURCH, ELCA

The kneel or sit as able THE SOLEMN COLLECTS AND LORD S PRAYER Dear of God: our heavenly Father sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved; that all who believe in him might be delivered from the power of sin and death, and become heirs with him of everlasting life. Let us kneel and pray, therefore, for people everywhere according to their needs. Silence is held for reflection. Let us pray for Elizabeth and Tim our bishops, for Tony our pastor, and all servants of the church, and for all the people of God. Almighty and eternal God, your Spirit guides the church and makes it holy. Strengthen and uphold our bishops, pastors, other ministers, and lay leaders. Keep them in health and safety for the good of the church, and help each of us in our various vocations to do faithfully the work to which you have called us. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for those preparing for baptism. Almighty and eternal God, you continue to bless the church. Increase the faith and understanding of those preparing for baptism. Give them new birth as your children, and keep them in the faith and communion of your holy church. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for our sisters and brothers who share our faith in Jesus Christ. Almighty and eternal God, you give your church unity. Look with favor on all who follow Jesus your Son. Make all the baptized one in the fullness of faith, and keep us united in the fellowship of love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for the Jewish people, the first to hear the word of God. Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and your teaching to Moses. Hear our prayers that the people you called and elected as your own may receive the fulfillment of the covenant's promises. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. Almighty and eternal God, gather into your embrace all those who call out to you under different names. Bring an end to inter-religious strife, and make us more faithful witnesses of the love made known to us in your Son. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for those who do not believe in God. Almighty and eternal God, you created humanity so that all may long to know you and find peace in you. Grant that all may recognize the signs of your love and grace in the world and in the lives of Christians, and gladly acknowledge you as the one true God. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for God's creation. Almighty and eternal God, you are the creator of a magnificent universe. Hold all the worlds in the arms of your care and bring all things to fulfillment in you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Let us pray for those who serve in public office. Almighty and eternal God, you are the champion of the poor and oppressed. In your goodness, give wisdom to those in authority, so that all people may enjoy justice, peace, freedom, and a share in the goodness of your creation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. THE SOLEMN LITURGY FOR GOOD FRIDAY Page 13 SAINT JAMES CHURCH, ELCA

The stand Let us pray for those in need. Almighty and eternal God, you give strength to the weary and new courage to those who have lost heart. Heal the sick, comfort the dying, give safety to travelers, free those unjustly deprived of liberty, and deliver your world from falsehood, hunger, and disease. Hear the prayers of all who call on you in any trouble, that they may have the joy of receiving your help in their need. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Finally, let us pray for all those things for which our Lord would have us ask in the words he himself has taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. THE CLOSING HYMN The are dismissed in profound silence.
