2 TWO GOALS 1) To help us better connect head and heart. Cranmer s purpose for worship is that the people should continually profit more and more in the knowledge of God and be the more inflamed with the love of His true religion. 2) To tune our ears to hear the gospel in worship.

3 THEOLOGY The central question being asked in the Reformation: How are people changed? By a work of God in the heart. And how does God do this work? Through His Word, particularly in the gospel.

4 THEOLOGY The driving force behind the Reformation, and therefore the driving force behind a Reformation understanding of worship can be summarized in this statement: THE WORD OF GOD BIRTHS FAITH

22 Dearly Beloved, We have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.
