2 THE CHAPEL The Chapel provides a sacred space at the heart of the College for all members of Selwyn College and Newnham College to use as a place of prayer and reflection. The Chapel is open to all from early in the morning until late at night, and unless a service is taking place, silence is kept between 12:00noon and 1:00pm each day during Full Term. In addition to Sunday services, daily prayers are offered morning and evening on weekdays. Requests for prayer can be written on the intercessions board in the ante-chapel. The Dean of Chapel and Chaplain, Hugh Shilson-Thomas, is a priest in the Church of England. He is available to all members of College in confidence to lend a listening ear, provide support and engage with those exploring questions of faith. He is part-time Chaplain at Newnham College, and can put members of faiths other than Christianity in touch with their own faith communities. The Assistant Chaplain, Roger Revell, is also an Anglican priest and a Selwyn graduate student. The Gosden Scholar and Ordinands on Attachment are students training for ordained ministry in the Church of England. They undertake duties in and around the Chapel. Worship at 8:30am on weekdays is in the Upper Chapel, which at other times is reserved for quiet prayer (open to all, entry through the vestry and follow signs). CHORAL COMPLINE by candlelight will be sung by the Choir on Wednesday 6 February at 10:00pm. A Choral Eucharist for CANDLEMAS (the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple) will be celebrated at 6:00pm on Sunday 3 February, marking the liturgical turning point from Christmas and Epiphany towards Lent and Easter. That morning there will be no communion service in the chapel. ASH WEDNESDAY (6 March) marks the beginning of Lent. There will be a Choral Communion Service (with the Imposition of Ashes) at 9:00pm. The will be a special service of MUSIC AND READINGS FOR LENT AND PASSIONTIDE on Sunday 10 March at 6:00pm. A CATHOLIC MASS is organised by Fisher House in Selwyn Chapel from time to time. All chapel-goers who have booked are then welcome to come to the New SCR for Chapel Supper. Simply sign up on the list at the back of the chapel by Wednesday or chapeladministrator@sel.cam.ac.uk. Ends in time for SCMS (music society) concerts. Cost 7.50 with drinks. FILM NIGHTS, CHAPEL SOCIALS AND TIME OUT All who come to chapel are welcome whenever people gather in D7 or elsewhere after chapel services. Other socials will be advertised during the term, including opportunities for relaxation and occasional Film Nights look out for further details. Please note also that entry to Ely Cathedral is now FREE to students see Chapel posters. WARDENS AND SACRISTANS Anyone who might be interested in assisting in the chapel as a warden or sacristan, meeting and greeting or setting up for services, is invited to speak with the Chaplain.
