1 Saint Katherine Glen Carlyn Road Falls Church, VA DOXA The monthly newsletter of Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church Volume 15, Number 4 April 2017 WHY DO YOU SEEK THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD? WE ARE PREPARING FOR the most joyous reasons of our existence. The victory over death and the time of re-creation into the eternal existence with the Creator of Life. Are you ready to be a partaker of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ? These last few months we have had an extraordinary amount of funerals, along with the mourning of so many loved parishioners many founders of Saint Katherine. Their memory is never forgotten by their loved ones and we pray that the Lord has them in His Memory. They are not just dead and gone, they live in His Kingdom. I want to seek my loved ones among the living when time comes for my death. I want you, no, really the Lord wants you to live a life of joy and happiness, and to know that in death there is a resurrection. Pascha for all of us is a foretaste of what is promised by Jesus to all of His creation a renewal of Paradise. Why do you seek the living among the dead? (Luke 24:5). Why do you mourn the incorrupt amid corruption? All Christianity, therefore, is the experience of faith repeated again and again as if for the first time, through its incarnation in rites, words, music, and colors. To the unbeliever, it may indeed seem like a mirage he hears only words, he sees only incomprehensible ceremonies, and he understands them only outwardly. But for believers, all of this radiates from within, and not as proof of his faith, but as its result, as its life in the world, in the soul, in history. Therefore the darkness and sadness of Holy Friday is for us something real, alive, and contemporary we can cry at the cross and experience everything that took place in that triumph of evil, treachery, cowardice, and betrayal. We can contemplate the life-bearing tomb on Holy Saturday with excitement and hope. And therefore, every year we can celebrate Pascha and the Resurrection. Pascha is not the remembrance of an event in the past. It is the real encounter in happiness and joy with him whom our hearts long ago knew and encountered as the life and light of all light. Pascha night testifies that Christ is alive and with us, and that we are alive with him. The entire celebration is an invitation to look at the world and life, and to behold the dawning of the mystical day of the Kingdom of light. Today the scent of spring begins, sings the church,...and the new creation exults. It exults in faith, in love, and in hope. INSIDE THIS ISSUE... This is the day of resurrection, Let us be illumined by the feast, Let us embrace each other, Let us call brothers even those that hate us, And forgive all by the resurrection, And so let us cry: Christ is risen from the dead, Trampling down death by death, And upon those in the tombs bestowing life. 3 FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT I WANT TO SPEND A LITTLE MORE TIME THIS MONTH discussing some recent improvements in our electronic giving programs. We have recently added a Giving Kiosk in the church narthex and our website giving page has also been significantly upgraded. In general, these improvements have been well received and frankly, that s very gratifying for all those who worked diligently to implement these changes. However, some have complained that these changes are too much and distract from our sacred worshipping environment. I respectfully disagree. Let me begin by saying communication is vital. Last month I wrote extensively about our church finances, our $1.65M budget, and what it takes to run our community. Making finances a part of our regular dialogue is essential to helping all parishioners understand and support our Holy Church s vision and we are ready, willing, and able to meet with all parishioners individually or in small groups to discuss our finances, stewardship, or other giving programs at any time. Your questions are always welcomed. A recent study revealed that Americans for the first time donated more than $1 billion a day on average $373.5 billion in all to charities. While giving to churches went up by almost 3 percent, it is nevertheless a sad fact their overall share of charitable giving continues to slip. This is a challenge for all churches and one our own community has not ignored as evidenced by our recent actions. Many people want to give online and through mobile means because it s how they pay for most things in our modern society. In my view, we have a responsibility to help parishioners instead of standing on what some might define as tradition or looking for reasons to justify inaction. The facts below are compelling. The study I mentioned earlier indicates 60 percent of overall churchgoers prefer giving electronically, and it s not just millennials. Predictably, ages exhibited the highest interest in e-giving at 77 percent, but seniors were not far behind at nearly 50 percent. In fact, the study found that preferences toward e-giving were strong across all age groups. Furthermore, there is a sizable giving gap between how givers prefer to give and by what giving options churches provide. In fact, two to four times as many churchgoers would give electronically if they had the option. Interestingly, the 60% figure I cite above, rises up to 80 percent among churchgoers who engage more frequently with the Church through attendance at services, participation in church schools, youth sports, or other activities. Generally speaking, the more active parishioners are, the more they are looking for convenient ways to give. Busy moms and dads often don t have time to stop to write a check when they re dropping off or picking up their kids from our church s school programs. Many of them have asked us to establish recurring online payment options for tuition and extracurricular activities and I m happy to report these changes will soon be implemented. Many of our ministry leaders and volunteers spend countless hours taking in and manually processing hundreds, even thousands of dollars, in cash or checks each year. Their job would be much easier if outings, camps, retreats, social events, fundraisers, and ministry dues could be paid for with credit cards or by using a mobile device. Many parishioners have told me that gathering up the family or coming straight from work for a meeting or event can be difficult, so it s understandable when they forget their checkbooks or are short of cash. In reality, most people rarely use cash these days. Our website and Giving Kiosk easily afford busy parishioners the opportunity to make multiple payments for a variety of church and social events within the community. Additionally, e-giving is a nice complement to more traditional means and it can be a supplement to giving throughout the year. Simply put, parishioners young and old are looking for new, more convenient ways to donate to their Church. This has been confirmed in conversations I ve had with other church leaders throughout our own Metropolis and Archdiocese at Clergy-Laity gatherings. Up until now, our e-giving capabilities at Saint Katherine were rudimentary and needed improvement. Online giving was occasional, even sporadic. In the final analysis, enhancing electronic giving at Saint Katherine isn t just about providing alternative giving options to occasional parishioners, but about more effectively connecting with those who are already engaged with the church in an active and meaningful way. It s as simple as clicking the Stewardship button on our website! I trust this brief conversation has provided you with meaningful insight and background relative to our recent enhancements and a further understanding that our initiatives in no way denigrate our holy traditions, but rather build on their foundations for a stronger future. I pray everyone s Lenten journey has been blessed and spiritually fulfilling. On behalf of our Parish Council, I wish you all great joy in the knowledge of the truly risen Christ! Καλό Πάσχα! Happy Easter! Your servant in Christ, President, Parish Council 3

4 FROM THE YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT OFFICE THE LENTEN SEASON AND PASCHA is a time for a fresh start and renewal. Our lives in the Church, much like the natural world, have different seasons. The springtime is a time of re-birth and growth. It is a time where the animals become more active and the plants sprout and grow. Likewise, we too can, and should, participate in this action of arising and feeling the warmth of the sunshine. Each day is a fresh opportunity and a gift. No matter what has happened this past year, good or bad, God is always here with us, offering us His Joy and Peace. Like the plants and animals that need food and water to grow, we too need elements to thrive and prosper. However, what we need most is to nourish our spiritual lives. Our hearts and souls are like little seedlings. We need to nurture them, but how? God s grace is the water and sunshine we need. We receive it by an active life in the Church. This means receiving Holy Communion, establishing habits of prayer and being grateful, being involved in the church as a community, and wanting to know and love God. Let us all seek to thrive and grow spiritually by God s grace. YOUTH ACTIVITIES Lenten Outreach Project, March 31-April 1. Wonderful ministry opportunity! 6 BOOK REVIEWS Eleni Ziu and Nina Ziu BOOKS FOR TEENS AND MORE! The Power of the Cross. Mary Paloumpis Hallick. Holy Cross Orthodox Press, Paperback, 92 pages. description of the historical importance and use of crosses in the Orthodox Church, including the sign of the cross. The author presents the book in historical order and explains the different styles of Orthodox crosses. The book is informative, full of amazing and true facts. For example, crosses have been around for as long as humans can remember. Simple crosses were found painted on the walls of caves from prehistoric times. Additionally, almost all cross styles used in Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism reflect different cultures, such as Celtic and Egyptian, and some are even based on different religions, such as Buddhism and paganism. The author explains these and other facts in interesting detail. In particular, I was surprised to learn that some early Christians avoided use of the cross after Christ s crucifixion because they thought the cross was a sign of shame and despair. However, the cross came into the faith as Saint Paul began to preach of salvation through the cross and being crucified with Christ. Only then did Christians begin to see the cross as a sign of life and victory. They began making the sign of the cross to signify the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit openly and often. I recommend this book to readers of all ages. ~Eleni Ziu Mary Paloumpis Hallick, Ed.D., was a career teacher and principal. Her other books include The Book of Saints and Sowing Seeds for Christ, as co-author. The Morning Offering. Abbot Tryphon. Ancient Faith Publishing, Paperback, 375 pages. The Morning Offering by Abbot Tryphon is a beautiful collection of blog-style readings for each day of the year. Short, simple, and concise, The Morning Offering is a great way to power start your day with a few paragraphs of Orthodox literature. Abbot Tryphon, a former college professor, is particularly gifted at communicating to the youth. Both the voracious and casual reader will find this book humorous, lighthearted, and uplifting. Many teens would find the abbot s perception of family, school, and church life to be accurate accounts of their personal struggles in such (Continued on page 12, column 2) ΤΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ Η ΦΑΝΤΑΣΙΑ ΣΤΟΝ ΑΝΘΡΩΠΟ Σοφία Δ. 6

11 MISSIONS AND OUTREACH Go therefore and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Visit with Bishop Neofitos. Our community was blessed to have Bishop Neofitos of The Holy Orthodox Diocese of Nyeri and All Mt. Kenya Region in our midst last month. His Grace celebrated the Presanctified Liturgy on Wednesday, March 8, the Salutation Service on Friday, March 10, and the Divine Liturgy on March 12. Abbot Tryphon s comments, suggestions, and personal experiences are great examples as to how Orthodox Christians should live their lives. The Morning Offering touches on areas such as procrastination, complaining, pride, living just for me and how to keep our prayer meaningful. The abbot s explanations are free of incomprehensible doctrine and written in a style understandable to young and old. One of the things I particularly enjoyed about this book was the fluency of reading from one day to another. The topic changed daily, yet it in some way it is a continuance of the previous reading. Abbot Tryphon has a gift for writing with ease and grace. ~Nina Ziu Abbot Tryphon is head of the All-Merciful Saviour Monastery (ROCOR), Vashon Island, WA and has a daily podcast found at LENTEN OUTREACH PROJECT. ONCE AGAIN, our Saint Katherine community will reach out to those who are living on the streets. Bags of clothing, personal items, and food will be distributed on April 1. While the items are very basic, they can be of great assistance to those less fortunate. If you would like to help with a monetary donation or donate needed items, please contact Daphne Papamichael (CyprusD@aol.com). Thank you for your support! 12

14 (Continued from page 1) Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene after the Resurrection, and He says to her Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabbouni! (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God (John 20:15-17). I pray that this Easter is, for each and every one of us, an opportunity to share with our Lord Jesus in His resurrection. Let us seek the life He promises for He lives and, we too shall live, forever and ever. Amen. Christos anesti! Cristos vaskres! Cristo ha resucitado! Hristos a inviat! Christos t ensah em muhtan!
