5 Desert Deanery Report to the Diocesan Assembly The Diocese of the West The Right Reverend DANIEL, Bishop of Santa Rosa, Dean The Desert Deanery of the Diocese of the West, the youngest of the Diocese s deaneries, was established by His Eminence, Archbishop BENJAMIN in July It is comprised of the parishes in the city and county of San Diego, California, and in the states of Nevada and Arizona. The parish communities included in the Desert Deanery are: Saint Paul the Apostle, Las Vegas, NV; Saints Peter and Paul, Phoenix, AZ; Saint John of Damascus, Poway, CA; and Saint Nicholas, San Diego, CA. The mission clergy and mission communities within the territory of the Desert Deanery are also invited and encouraged to participate in deanery life, meetings, and events as may be helpful and appropriate. The principal meeting of the deanery clergy took place in early December, during a gathering which was hosted at Saint John of Damascus Church, Poway, CA. Discussion of Church life, parish activities, and the state of Orthodoxy in North America were topics that were the focus of the meeting. The second day of the meeting saw the concelebration by deanery and local clergy of the Divine Liturgy at Saint Nicholas Church, San Diego, on the occasion of its Altar Feast. A festive luncheon hosted by the Parish Sisterhood followed the Divine Liturgy. It is anticipated that the deanery clergy and their will participate in a similar gathering before the end of the present calendar year. The District Dean is in regular contact with the clergy of the Desert Deanery and can attest that the clergy and their parish communities have continued to faithfully fulfill their mission and ministry of living and proclaiming the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. Details of deanery life on the parish level may be found in the parish reports presented to this Assembly by the respective parishes. Additionally, some aspects of parish life in the deanery are included here. Highlights of parish life in the Desert Deanery include Saint John of Damascus, Poway, CA, and completion of its two significantly large renovation/expansion projects, which included an icon project for iconography in the Altar which required expansion of the altar area, and completion of the new construction and renovation of the church hall. Archbishop Benjamin blessed the finished icons and Bishop Daniel blessed the completed hall project at the end of last year. The parish rector, Archpriest Alexander Federoff, continues to provide dedicated guidance and pastoral care as the parish community looks forward to future growth and development. Saint Nicholas Church, San Diego, CA, continues its community life under the faithful pastoral leadership of Archpriest Alexander Shkalov. The regular cycle of services and attention to the spiritual growth of the parishioners carries on in the face of the difficulties presented by location and parking needs. The various administrative aspects (and challenges) of parish life continue to be addressed in practical ways. Ongoing administrative life and special projects are accomplished with the support and assistance of the Parish Council and Parish Improvements Board. Saint Paul the Apostle Church, Las Vegas, NV, Archpriest John Dresko, parish rector, continues to guide the parish community as it serves parishioners and expands its mission and service in the city of Las Vegas and the ever-growing Las Vegas metropolitan area. 6 substantial bequest has been of great assistance in retiring mortgage debt and fulfilling bond commitments. Father John is assisted in providing priestly service to the community by Priest Stephen Osborn. Throughout the past year, Saints Peter and Paul Church, Phoenix, AZ, continued to focus on parish growth and reaching out to the broader community in new ways. For the sixth consecutive year, parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul again coordinated the annual Arizona Walk for Missions. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has begun to be introduced into the Sunday School curriculum; this is helping meet the educational needs of the several new families with young children who have become a part of the parish community in the past two years. Through their dedication to their parish communities, the clergy of the Desert Deanery continue to exhibit fidelity and stability in pastoral care to the life as well as to the growth of the parishes within the Deanery, and thus to the overall life, wellbeing, and mission of the Diocese of the West. The clergy are assisted in this work by many able and competent parishioners who live their commitment to the Church by offering their services in all areas of parish life. It bears repeating that, while the local mission communities remain under the auspices of the Mission Deanery, the clergy of the Desert Deanery are likewise fully committed to outreach and missionary activity, willingly embracing the fact that each community of every deanery, both established parishes and newly-established missions, are involved in the work of evangelization. Let us note again that every Church community is, in fact, a mission community. As in last year s report, it is important to note that the clergy of the Desert Deanery and their parish communities continue to participate in local inter-orthodox activities and events, primarily in the area of coordinating inter-parish Lenten Vespers as well as various charitable and social organizations and events. 10 coverings used in the temple. The members work together closely to oversee and/or host the weekly Sunday coffee hours as well as hosting other parish celebrations and social events, e.g. Lenten Vespers hosted at Saints Peter and Paul, the annual Patronal Feastday Luncheon, Nativity Eve Holy Support, Mothers Day and Fathers Day luncheons, Pascha Agape Potluck, etc. Flowers decorating the temple regularly throughout the year and for the Great Feasts and other special occasions are provided and/or coordinated by the MBAS. Funds are raised through nutroll bakes for Christmas and Pascha bread bakes for Pascha. Church School - Coordinated by Stephanie Homyak, who is assisted by several teachers, aides, and parents, our Church School classes meet regularly on Sundays throughout the year, providing religious education and social interaction for our parish children and youth. The Church School has also organized various programs and activities throughout the year, participating in various charity efforts as we as our annual Saint Nicholas Day Yolka and the "Easter Egg Hunt" on Pascha following Agape Vespers. The students have also reached out to our parish shut-ins and sick by making greeting cards for them. Saints Peter and Paul Website - Our parish website (sspeterpaulaz.org; Subdeacon Michael Wagner, Webmaster) serves as a resource for members of the parish community and has become a point of contact and information resource for persons seeking the Orthodox Faith in the Phoenix area as well as for Orthodox Christians and others who may be visiting the Phoenix area and desire to attend Sunday Divine Liturgy. Contact information for the Rector, Parish Council, and other parish organizations and ministries is provided on the website. The parish Facebook page (Saints Peter and Paul Eastern Orthodox Church), Sterling Sourk, coordinator, also contributes to parish outreach and communication. Parish Newsletter - Our monthly parish newsletter, Stephanie Homyak, editor, provides the calendar of monthly events, articles, Rector's messages, announcements, and educational information. It is also posted on the parish website. Additionally, a weekly flier is distributed on Sunday mornings which includes the Scripture readings of the day and an updated prayer list. This is prepared weekly by Joffa Mauskopf-Appelgate. Parish Maintenance Committee - Our parish maintenance committee, overseen by David Homyak, oversees and addresses the ongoing regular and special maintenance needs of our parish building and properties. As part of ongoing maintenance and improvements, a bluetoothenhanced sound system was recently installed to assist our hearing-challenged parishioners in their participation in the Divine Services. Volunteer Committee - David Bieber chairs our parish Volunteer Committee which has as its purpose the coordination of volunteers for various parish organizations and special projects. A list of volunteers and their areas of special interest or expertise and ability is maintained and individuals (and groups) are called upon as needed. Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America (Phoenician "O" Club, Chapter 219) - The officers and members of FOCA Chapter 219, all of whom are also involved in other areas of parish life and service, support specially-designated FOCA national charities, e.g. youth ministry and Saint Herman of Alaska Seminary. Occasional fundraisers assist with this type of charitable outreach beyond the parish. The FOCA has also sponsored special social events for parish youth, young adults, and families. DOW Assembly 10 Delegate Book 2

11 Continuing Faith Formation - "Adult Education Classes" are aimed at providing further formation in the faith for adult members of the parish and are held throughout the year. Classes are attended by parishioners, members of other parishes, and enquirers. Arizona Council of Eastern Orthodox Clergy - Bishop Daniel, Rector, supports the work of the local clergy council. The council coordinates such events as retreats and fundraisers (e.g. the annual "Arizona Walk for Missions") and also serves as a local clearing house for local concerns and issues affecting the life of the 14 Orthodox parishes in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The All Saints Orthodox Summer Camp, an inter-orthodox camp in which our youth participate, is presently coordinated through the ACEOC. It also provides online updates on parish information, a calendar of local events, and general resources for the overall community on its website: azorthodox.org. Teen and Young Adult League (T/YAL) - Coordinated by Mara Hecht, the T/YAL invites teenagers, college-age, young married couples, and "20's-30's" to come together for various activities on an age-appropriate basis. Generally, an event is planned for each month through the year, alternating between social gatherings and outreach and social service projects. Our teens and young adults are also involved in many areas of our parish life. This year, our parish participation in Project Mexico was coordinated through the T/YAL. Five of our young adults traveled to Tijuana and participated in the building of a home. This was accomplished in cooperation with the young adults of several local parishes. Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities Arizona Missions Walk - For the sixth consecutive year, the parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul Church once again coordinated the annual "Arizona Walk for Missions." Although an inter-orthodox event involving most of the local Orthodox parishes and enjoying the participation of several local clergy, the inspiration for the event, motivation, leadership and administration were once again mostly from our parish. This annual event splits the raised funds between Project Mexico and OCMC. OCMC reports that this is the largest such parish effort in the United States. Over $25, has been raised in the past few years. Neighborhood Christmas Outreach - Again this past year, the parish community opened its arms and doors to our neighbors by sponsoring a Christmas/Saint Nicholas celebration for children and families living in the neighborhood of the church, primarily in a low-income housing apartment building. Parishioners donated gifts (the participating children are invited to provide their gender, age, and "wish list" which are given to parishioners to assist in shopping) which are distributed by Saint Nicholas when he visits the party that is held for the children. Each family also received a food basket (bigger than ever this year) which included hams and other holiday foods. Over 60 children received gifts this year. This year, the mothers were also given a special gift basket of perfumes and toiletries. The parish youth also participated by wrapping gifts, decorating the parish center, providing entertainment (facepainting and games) and by coordinating the refreshments that were served at the party. It is planned that this will be held again this year, the fourth year in a row. Repose of Protodeacon Alexis Washington - While not exactly within the category of a "highlight," the parish was greatly impacted by the October 2, repose of Protodeacon Alexis Washington who had faithfully served the parish for almost ten years, following his move from Holy Trinity Cathedral, Chicago, IL. Bishop Daniel presided at the Funeral Service which was concelebrated by several local clergy and with the assistance of local and out-of-town DOW Assembly 11 Delegate Book 2

12 deacons. The following day, the Divine Liturgy, Panikhida, and Burial, were presided by His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin. Accommodations were made by parishioners for out-of-town guests and for the reception and repast which followed the services. May the Lord grant His servant, Protodeacon Alexis, rest with the Saints and Memory Eternal! Outreach and Charitable Activities Andre House and Feed My Starving Children are two charities that are supported by our Teen and Young Adult League (T/YAL). Andre House, a facility located in downtown Phoenix, provides meals, showers, and counseling to people living on the streets. Feed My Starving Children is a nation-wide outreach to families and children in need which invites various church and not-for-profit groups to assist in the packaging of food and meals for distribution. Saint Mary's Food Bank - Our parish community continues to support the work of Saint Mary's Food Bank, a large and well-known local charity. This Phoenix-based operation serves the substantial needs of the elderly, ill, homebound, and homeless in the Phoenix metropolitan area and throughout the state. Our ongoing collection of food and dry-goods are transferred to Saint Mary's Food Bank on a regular basis for eventual distribution throughout its state-wide system. Project Mexico and Saint Innocent Orphanage- Through a monthly collection, the parish helps support the work of Saint Innocent Orphanage by providing for the salary of a tutor for students at the orphanage. As noted above, in June five of our young adults from the Teen and Young Adult League also participated directly in the building of a home at Project Mexico with financial support for this project being obtained through fund raisers they had sponsored. Additional Charitable Assistance- Charitable assistance is also provided, whenever possible, to persons who make their way to our church, either on weekdays during office hours or during the hours of services, primarily on weekends. This often takes the form of sharing food, such as may be available during coffee hours or the making of sandwiches and giving of bottled water or juices. Assistance is also given by referring individuals in need to other organizations and institutions which are better suited to meeting their needs. Major Challenges Faced The major challenge facing Saints Peter and Paul Church continues to be demographic and geographic. Parishioners live in all regions of the Phoenix metropolitan area, some driving over an hour each way to attend services. The distance and traffic challenges make it difficult for most to participate in any weekday services or activities. Additionally, our growing number of young families have weekday school, sport, and arts commitments that, added to driving distances, make it difficult to participate in weekday services or educational or service programs. Ministry to Russian immigrants will be given a higher priority in the coming year and will include more, and more obvious, efforts to reach out to the Russian Orthodox living in the Phoenix area. We have come to know many of them through various events throughout the year, but have not yet been able to identify a successful way to bring them into greater participation in community life. Additionally, a Community Outreach Committee has been formed in the parish and is identifying more and more efficient ways to be of service to the general community in the neighborhood of the parish church. Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October to September 2018 Annual Retreat- A parish retreat is being planned to take place in mid-november, at the DOW Assembly 12 Delegate Book 2

13 beginning of the Nativity Fast. As is our custom, the retreat will also be open to members of other parish communities in the Phoenix area. Ongoing Renovation and Improvements- It is planned that we will continue to identify needs to improve the adornment of the parish temple and the condition of the buildings and parish property. It is hoped that we will replace all the windows in the temple that will be of higher quality and improve the effectiveness of healing and cooling. Our first two bids were $65,000 and $50,000 because we did not have any support in the suspended ceiling. After intense research we found a system that was supported by the floor tracks for $14,200. The divided arrived DOW Assembly 14 Delegate Book 2

15 August 17, and are in the process of being installed. Another project was to redo the upper parking lot which is 33 years old. Cost $35,000. When we built the church in 1994, we had planned to finish the vestibule and candlestand area with custom cabinets but ran out of funds. We are still working out details. We received a donation with the purpose of buying something for the hall. Immediately the thought was to equip the hall with a speaker and presentation system. This was completed on August 13, with a 110 white screen, ceiling mounted wireless projector, and noiseless PA system. Finally, the fifth project also funded by a memorial donation is to install a chandelier in the church. This was not an easy task since we do not want to block the iconography in the dome, around the iconostasis or in the altar. We finally figured out how to accurately measure the dome and should be putting a down payment soon. Outreach and Charitable Activities We backed out of feeding the homeless through FOCUS San Diego because we lost our main cooks. It has been difficult to find a local group to join but we are still investigating the possibilities. There are very few homeless in Poway or Rancho Bernardo which tends to be an affluent area. We continue to support OUTREACH ALASKA and helping seminarians and their families. Every third Sunday of every month is Charity Sunday when we collect funds to support charitable projects. We gave $1,354 to this year s Diocesan Lenten Charity. Major Challenges Faced The Russians are Coming! Recently we have been having more Russian immigrants come to St John s. Some are church goers; others are not. They expect their children to be baptized on their first visit and have no idea about membership or even supporting the church financially. Several have become faithful church goers. We have also had many seekers. Folks are coming because they are not happy with changes happening in their protestant church. We constantly have visitors. Most protestants have no previous knowledge or understanding of the Orthodox Church. In our world of instant results, they are disappointed that they cannot just sign a membership form and join our parish and the Orthodox faith. Page 2 of 3 DOW Assembly 15 Delegate Book 2

19 MISSION DEANERY REPORT DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY There are currently 20 Missions in the Diocese, as well as several developing Mission Stations. Almost all of the Mission are in a state of growth and expansion. Several are at capacity for their physical structures. The difficulty is usually the high cost of real estate in most of our locations. In the past year: St. Anthony Mission in Bozeman, Mt. has achieved all the rubrics needed to move to Parish Status. This will formally happen on the weekend of October 28-29th. Congratulations to Fr. David Morrison and all those who have worked so diligently to achieve this important step. The same is true of St. Katherine Mission in Kirkland, Wa. After many years of effort to find an appropriate (and affordable) permanent location they were able to make the purchase this year! Kirkland is a very expensive area, and it was a BIG step for them to take. Congratulations to Fr. Barnabas Powell and all who tirelessly worked to get to this moment. St. Katherine Mission will formally become a Parish on the weekend of November The Mission Station in Astoria, Oregon formally became a Mission (St. Brendan the Navigator) earlier this year. Astoria is the Northern most town on the Oregon Coast. It has shown growth and stability over the past several years and the location has great potential. Joy of All Who Sorrow in Culver City, Ca. has reached near capacity in their current facility. They are taking steps now to both locate and make the move into their first permanent location. Please keep them in your prayers. This is another very expensive area for real estate. Over the past two years we have closed a few locations that were not likely of moving forward. We are also begin judicious about opening new missions relative to the flow of clergy from our seminaries and the need in the Diocese as some clergy are reaching retirement age. (The average retirement age in the OCA is 72) We will only open new mission in locations that we are able to serve properly. His Eminence Archbishop Benjamin is tireless in visiting and supporting our Mission efforts. This is a great encouragement. DOW Assembly 19 Delegate Book 2

20 !!!!!!!!!! Page 2 Also I would like to thank Peter Schwalbenberg, President of the Mission Board for his diligence and support. The same to the Mission Board. I would also like to thank the Diocese of the West for its unflagging vision for and financial support of missions. It is unique in the OCA. We appreciate your continued prayers snd support for our mission efforts, and encourage everyone to visit and encourage our missions and mission clergy over the coming year. Fr. Damian Kuolt, Priest in Charge Committees/Societies none Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities Bible Classes and Adult Education during the week Week Day Services Coffee Talk w/fr. Damian an informal meeting at local coffee houses to meet and visit on the spiritual life Outreach and Charitable Activities Outreach has been limited to Fr. Damian wandering around Bend and bumping into people in the community - this has created dozen relationships with some loose attraction to the parish and 3 new catechumens. Major Challenges Faced There is a close sense of fellowship and desire to be together every Sunday, but new people have nothing else to enter in to except coffee hour. There are few of the original core and they are limited in their ability to support church services and activities. Most of the previous core have dropped over the years; moved away, passed away or just attend once a year. For many who have checked us out, there is just not enough here that they will make it their regular Church. New people, but no increase to the flock just turnover. This year we have: Two new families who moved into the area Two to be baptized soon 4 original regulars (late 60s +) live far away and cannot do more than attend on Sundays. 1 family who is off and on and has a very positive impact when here 6 who dropped away, a couple for whom I am not the priest they need (not greek enough, not pious enough, too this or that, etc.) Everyone is learning as we go. There still is little in the way of an Orthodox sense of parish life and Divine Services (no singers, no reader, no understanding of celebration of the Feasts and yearly cycle). Most active members are converts with little to no exposure the Orthodox Church outside of this little mission or perhaps one other parish for a short time. A major challenge continues to be visibility in the community. Our Facility is awkward from the outside and gives us no public presence, though inside it is a warm Orthodox Temple. 42 Parish Name and Address DOW PARISH ANNUAL REPORT for the Diocesan Assembly Photo St. Katherine Orthodox Mission nd Ave Ne Kirkland, WA Clergy Archpriest Barnabas Powell Deacon Dumitru Nita Committees/Societies Parish Council Choir Sunday School Hospitality Coordinators Charity Committee Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities 1. By God s grace, we were able to acquire the church and grounds we ve rented since The purchase closed Nov. 21 (Entrance of the Theotokos). Unfortunately, a faulty appraisal led to the bank withdrawing our loan offer, so we closed with short-term, seller financing. Five more rejections followed over the next five months, until we were led to an Orthodox loan officer whose father-in-law is a local Antiochian priest. With his assistance, we signed refi. documents on Holy Friday. We re now engaged in several remodeling projects, and thankful to God for this gift after 18 years as a mission. 2. We continue to receive a steady stream of inquirers. Recent growth has mostly come from Orthodox transplants. More in-house converts are needed. 3. Growth in operational scope has led to the development of several staff positions, with modest stipends. In addition to our Deacon, Choir Director and Youth Director, we ve established a Parish Warden (handyman), Maintenance Coordinator (custodian), and Bookkeeper (carved out from elected treasurer duties to make that position less taxing). Outreach and Charitable Activities 1. Several parishioners participated in our annual Project Mexico trip. Organized by a couple in our parish, it included two dozen faithful from local parishes. 2. We serve a monthly meal at the Salvation Army, a week of meals at Congregations for the Homeless during Lent, and ring bells for the Salvation Army in Advent. 3. We take a special collection the first Sunday of each month for different charities, including: Project Mexico, IOCC, OCMC, St. Petersburg Children s Hospice, Gobezie Goshu Home, Care Net and a local women s shelter. Major Challenges Faced 1. Facilities Management. Going from tenant to landowner has stretched our financial and human resources. Carrying a $5000 monthly mortgage has gone smoothly, but the more we discover about the quirks of our building, the more we realize how much work it needs. Our first months of ownership involved a major HVAC overhaul. 2. In addition to being landowners, we ve also become landlords. The bottom of our building is rented to a preschool. The income helps, but our tenant has also needed a lot of building upgrades. This first year, we ll barely break even. Planning and execution of repairs and remodeling have required much of our clergy, Parish Council and Warden. But we re glad for this challenge, rather than the perennial one of acquiring property! 58 DEAN S REPORT PACIFIC CENTRAL DEANERY Your Eminence, Your Grace, Reverend Fathers, and Delegates, The Pacific Central Deanery is blessed by its proximity to our beloved Hierarch, Archbishop Benjamin, and his historic and God-pleasing cathedral in San Francisco. Our cathedral, parishes and monasteries include Holy Trinity Cathedral in San Francisco, St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church in Berkeley, Nativity of the Holy Virgin Russian Orthodox Church in Menlo Park, Christ the Saviour Russian Orthodox Church in San Francisco, and Holy Myrrhbearing Women Russian Orthodox Church in West Sacramento, the Monastery of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco (men's monastery) in Manton, St. Seraphim/Protection of the Virgin Orthodox Church, Santa Rosa, Monastery of the Holy Assumption, Calistoga (a Women's Monastery), the Skete of Our Lady of Kazan (Women's Monastery), Santa Rosa; St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, San Anselmo; St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church, Concord; Elevation of the Holy Cross, Sacramento; St. Innocent Orthodox Church, Livermore; St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Saratoga; St Christina of Tyre in Fremont, St Innocent's in Eureka, and (at least historically,) Holy Trinity Chapel, Fort Ross. We are blessed to have, for the most part, vibrant parishes with dedicated and Christ-loving pastors, and devout, hardworking laypeople. As always we thank God that we have a clergy brotherhood that truly loves each other. We have made a concerted effort to visit each others parishes for Altar Feasts or other important occasions. The Archbishop has also gathered us together for prayer and fellowship once during Great Lent, and Once during Bright Week. (The second gathering has better food.) Deanery activities have consisted in an ongoing Clergy Continuing Education Program that meets regularly during the course of the year. The classes have been both of a practical, as well as theological nature. Participation has been high and enthusiasm for it likewise high. The Deanery also enjoys an annual Labor Day picnic for all OCA clergy and families that reside within the territory of the Deanery. (All Mission Deanery clergy are always invited to everything.) It normally takes place at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont, and consists of a giant pot-luck, grilling of various proteins, story-telling, singing of camp songs and other folk songs. We ordinarily get clergy families, along with the Archbishop. One disappointment this year was the fact that we did not have our usual St Eugene s Summer Camp for our kids. This was due to a variety of factors conspiring against us, but a Camp Committee has been formed to solve these problems. We are probably facing the unhappy reality that we are going to have to find a new site for our Summer Camp for the future. 60 By God s grace and mercy, the parish is, once again, growing. Two years ago, we introduced more English into the Sunday Divine Liturgies. Initially, people left the parish, but, after six months, some returned and new people began to turn up. The English has attracted some converts, however, greater growth has come from younger families from the former Soviet Union, who desire their children to be raised in the Orthodox faith. They understand the necessity for English but also wish their children to have some exposure to Church Slavonic. Our parish offers a unique balance of both languages, which is appreciated. We are hoping to organize a Sunday school this year. The greatest challenge of the last year was finding a new choir director to replace Alexei Cavendish, who relocated to the United Kingdom in March of this year. Despite being in the San Francisco Bay Area, we were unable to find somebody already living in the area. We eventually hired Caleb Lewis, who comes from the state of Georgia and is currently completing his doctorate in choral conducting. Given the cost of living in the area, we had to offer him a compensation package that provides him with enough income to relocate and live here. Beginning his tenure in May, he has already made significant improvements to our parish choir and has been well received by the parish community. Our greatest financial challenge is the physical state of the parish property. The parish earns most of its income from rental properties (4 apartments, 2 houses). However, much needed repairs have ended up costing more than originally expected. We are currently looking to replace the roof of the parish hall and make needed improvements to the parish rectory. As for the church building itself, we have recently repainted the cupola, installed an air conditioning unit, and are restoring the Romanov Memorial kiot, which will include a newly commissioned icon of the Russian Royal Passion-bearers and Martyrs. Fr. Edward continues to serve liturgy regularly at the UC Berkeley OCF, which is held at the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute. He is also catechizing two men, both of whom come from a non-christian background, and thus is developing a catechetical program for such persons. This year we held our Annual Banquet in February at a new location. is always a wonderful evening with people reporting such positive experiences from attending. 3. This August we were blessed to with the Archpastoral Visit of His Eminence and elevation of our own Fr. George Masters to archpriest. Outreach and Charitable Activities Outreach 1. 67 Orthodox who do not know the teachings of the Church as well as Orthodox Christians who are looking for a refresher in the basics of the Faith. We advertise this locally in the Tri-City area. 2. Our weekly Father s Cafe held on Tuesdays from 10-11:30am has proven to be an excellent place for inquirers/seekers to come and get a first taste of the life of the Church. This is a very informal gathering of coffee and tea that begins and ends with prayer, has a short spiritual reading, and allows attendees to ask questions, discuss all kinds of issues of the day, or converse about their favorite movies. Either Fr. Michael or parishioners will offer church tours to newcomers. 3. We are regularly contacted by the local Catholic school to host their 8 th grade history class at the church to explain the history of the Orthodox Church as well as discuss the similarities and differences of the Church to the Roman Catholic Church. 4. In October we held our annual Open House, Community Yard Sale & Bake Sale to encourage people to come, meet the community and perhaps learn about the Orthodox Church. People brought items from their homes to sell and baked all kinds of tasty treats to sell. We had DVDs about the Orthodox Church running in different places. Our bookstore is open and available to visitors. We had someone in the church temple to greet people and give impromptu tours to folks who wanted to come and see. 5. On the Sunday of St. Mary of Egypt we annually hold an Old World Bake Sale for which parishioners made ethnic treats. Since our community is so ethnically diverse, we had baked goods from many ethnic backgrounds. We advertised in the local newspapers and had an excellent turnout from both Orthodox Christians in the area (many of whom had not known there was a church in Fremont) as well as non-orthodox who were very interested in the ethnic goodies. We are finding that people are returning from year to year and are looking for the ads. Charities 1. We continue to serve lunch the first Saturday of every month at the ABODE Tri- Cities Sunrise Village Homeless shelter in Fremont. 2. Each month, the parish sends financial support to the Kazan Skete in Santa Rosa. This is a line item in the budget that is supplemented by a charities collection box that is always out on our welcome table or on the food table during our fellowship hour. 3. We have a Local Needs/Good Samaritan Fund to help people in the community. 4. We are participants in the local Tri-Cities Volunteers' Food Drive collecting healthy nonperishable foods for people in need in Fremont, Newark and Union City. 5. We regularly collect supplies proteins for the members of the military in coordination with Blue Star Moms. 6. We have drives for school supplies & Christmas presents to help the children of our local ABODE family homeless shelter here in Fremont as well as other local agencies and Orthodox institutions which serve children such as St. Herman s Seminary, 7. We are a participant and supporter of the annual IOCC Benefit Dinner in the Bay Area. Collections Throughout the year we hold collections for various ministries taking place in our Diocese, the Orthodox Church in America and the Orthodox Church worldwide. These include: a Father s Day benefit luncheon to contribute to the Gobezhe Goshu Home for the elderly in Ethiopia; a Mother s Day collection to support our local St. Eugene s youth camp:; a summer-time collection to support families at St. Herman s Seminary in Alaska; a collection for the Orthodox Seminary in Africa in cooperation with the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC), a collection for Orthodox Christian Fellowship in connection with SCOBA's annual College Student Sunday in September. Major Challenges Faced The Bay Area attracts people due to the job market and general appeal of Northern CA. DOW Assembly 67 Delegate Book 2

68 However, when people s get transferred for their work we also lose people. The cost of living in area also leads people to relocate especially at retirement. This year we lost 3 families. Fortunately, we have also gained families. 75 DOW PARISH ANNUAL REPORT for the Diocesan Assembly Parish Name and Address St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (1956) 102 Ross Avenue San Anselmo, CA Photo Clergy Archpriest Stephan Meholick Protodeacon George Golitzin Committees/Societies The actual framework of the parish community can be broken down into eight ministries: Liturgy & Music, Temple Caretakers, Fellowship & Parish Service, Parish Operations, Education, Good Works & Community Outreach, Finance, and Maintenance & Capital Improvements. ALL Parish members are invited to become active participants of ministries and leaders of each group comprise the parish council. Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities On Nov. 17, we celebrated our 60th anniversary. The emphasis that weekend was "homecoming". We have initiated Phase II of the remodel of our parish social hall. We hosted a block party to welcome everyone who had recently moved into the apartment complex next door. This was a great venue to invite all the neighbors within the immediate vicinity for an afternoon of food, music, and fellowship. Outreach and Charitable Activities We host a local "12 step" meeting as well as the local community garden meetings at our facilities. We regularly support IOCC, OCMC, Homeward Bound and REST (2 local homeless shelters), St. Vincent De Paul Dining Room (local soup kitchen), the Health and Wellness Center, New Beginnings Shelter, and the Uganda Education Fund. We hosted a neighborhood block party and then a neighborhood outdoor square dance. Our church school children march in the annual town Country Fair Day parade accompanied by a float with icons and bell ringing. On Theophany we have a cross procession from the church through the center of town for the public blessing of San Anselmo Creek. Major Challenges Faced One of our best assets is our wonderful location in the beautiful "seminary district" of San Anselmo. One of our worst liabilities is our wonderful location in the beautiful "seminary district" of San Anselmo. The enormously high cost of living (esp. real estate which still is rapidly increasing in value here) forces many of the faithful to relocate in more affordable areas. Our greatest challenge is facing the complexities of an effective outreach to the local community around us while simultaneously ministering to the Slavs in the North Bay who come to St. Nicholas. 87 Report of the Pacific Northwest Deanery Archpriest John Pierce, Dean August 24, The Pacific Northwest Deanery consists of: St. Spiridon Cathedral, Seattle WA (1895), Archpriest Yuri Maev, Rector; St. Nicholas Church, Portland OR (1895), Archpriest George Gray, Rector; Holy Resurrection Church, Tacoma WA (1896), Archpriest John Pierce, Rector; St. Anne Church, Corvallis, OR (1990), Archpriest Stephen Soot, Rector; St. Herman of Alaska Church, Port Townsend, WA (2000), Archpriest Nicholas Kime, Rector; St. Elizabeth the New Martyr Church, Poulsbo, WA (2001), Archpriest John Strickland, Rector. At a meeting with the diocesan deans, August 16-17,, His Eminence, Archbishop Benjamin, indicated his intention to transfer St. Katherine Mission, Kirkland WA (1998), Archpriest Barnabas Powell, Rector, into the Pacific Northwest Deanery this year. Both of the major urban hubs of our Deanery, Seattle and Portland, have strong and dedicated Pan-Orthodox associations. Our Deanery parishes and missions are integral parts of these associations which provide worship, mission and fellowship opportunities for the clergy and faithful. Albany/Corvallis, being further from the Portland area, and having only a handful of small Orthodox parishes and missions, has fewer opportunities for this type of Pan-Orthodox involvement. Last year Fr. Matthew Tate organized a gathering for the clergy wives of our southern hub in Portland. This year on May 20, Matushka Katherine Pierce organized a visit with picnic lunch to the beautiful Lakewold Gardens near Tacoma for those living in the northern part of the deanery. The Pacific Northwest Deanery meets once a year at a restaurant along the I-5 corridor near the town of Chehalis, about half way between Port Townsend in the north and Corvallis in the south. We invite the clergy and delegates of the Mission Deanery parishes in our area to attend. High on the agenda is planning the upcoming Deanery Camp session. As in the past four years, the most significant activity this year was the Pacific Northwest Orthodox Youth Camp for children 1 st 12 th grade, August 7-10, at the All Saints (Greek Orthodox) Camp in Gig Harbor, WA. Fr. Barnabas Powell of St. Katherine Mission in Kirkland, WA is our camp co camp director along with his dear wife, Protinica Elizabeth. Activities included swimming, canoeing, arts & crafts, campfires & games. It was a hot week, with lots of smoke drifting down from the massive British Columbia wildfires. Fr. Stephen Soot of St. Anne, Corvallis, OR, presented a series of talks, As for Me and My House, We will Serve the Lord. The session fell during the Feast of St. Herman of Alaska, and we were blessed to have his holy relics present at divine services offered in the chapel. The only sad part of our camp experience is that we are not joined by as many DOW clergy as could be, nor are their parishes represented by campers and staff. Pacific Northwest Orthodox Youth Camp is scheduled for June 25-28, Over the past five years an activity developed by Holy Resurrection Church, Tacoma, has grown into an event for our parishes and missions in the Puget Sound, and is taking on a truly deanery aspect. This is a family campout at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. We reserve two group sites, with some people reserving their own sites, or rooms at the nearby National Park Lodge. Worship (we truly have a tabernacle in the wilderness), meals and campfires are held in common, hikes are planned, otherwise families are free to roam about the park in the daytime at their own leisure. This year 68 people participated, August Respectfully Submitted by Archpriest John Pierce DOW Assembly 87 Delegate Book 2

Rocky Mountain Deanery clergy strive to meet, communicate, and support one another regularly throughout the year. Together we discuss and plan details of our deanery sponsored activities (Summer Camp, Winter Retreat, Mission Trips, Divide blessing, new missions, etc.). In official meeting we encourage one another with respect to priest/family well-being, spiritual growth, parish finances, and pastoral issues encountered. There exists a strong brotherhood amongst deanery clergy as we share our lives and experiences through these meetings and common events. Deanery clergy participate in the many Orthodox events up and down the front range. Our own camps, mission trips, and teen retreats remain instrumental in enabling hundreds of youth across jurisdictions to form deep and rewarding bonds of fellowship. In addition to those mentioned above, Fr. Zechariah is a faithful presence who continues to minister across the southern boundaries of our deanery, growing the parish of St. Michael s in Pueblo. Fr. Simeon Johnson is newly assigned to assist at Holy Theophany, as well as to serve throughout the deanery as called upon. Fr. John Armstrong is a well-respected presence at Orthodox events of the Denver Metro area who continues to grow, deepen, and beautify the Orthodox witness of St. Herman s in Littleton. Fr. Moses Hibbard has brought tremendous stability to St. Nicholas, Billings MT, and labors to expand an Orthodox presence throughout Montana and Wyoming. Speaking of: We ever look forward to the official reception of Fr. David Morrison and the faithful of St. Anthony s in Bozeman, MT into our deanery. In the meantime he and the parishioners are a strong and valued presence at our deanery events and camps. Photos of a small portion of our deanery activities follow. We still face the usual temptations that parish communities typically face, but we are growing in numbers, maturity, and stability. As a parish and community, we face problems of isolation. We continue to seek ways to overcome this by participating in events within the Diocese, and inviting in speakers from different parts of the country. Johnson Rector (until July ) Archpriest David Lynch Rector (beginning August ) Committees/Societies Rose-Marie Society Slavic Fest Committee Choir/Liturgical Music Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities 1. Slavic Fest was a record year for attendance and income attendance at the church tours of historic St. Tikhon s Chapel during the festival was at least 300 people. 2. In the parish received one Russian apostate back into the church. 3. Winter tea with Father and the young ladies has continued to be a success. Outreach and Charitable Activities 1. Annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets to needy families 2. Support of the Eastern Plains Community Pantry in Calhan 3. Support of OCPM (along with the rest of Southern Colorado) during Pan-Orthodox Lenten Vespers. Major Challenges Faced 1. General rural economic decline a. The economic situation has not improved. Only one family makes its entire living in agriculture. Most of our non-retired people make a living by having both spouses working in Colorado Springs and running cattle as well. b. Fr Simeon is increasingly convinced that there will be a major societal shakeup, the likes of which haven t been seen since the 1930 s, in our rural areas. 2. Demographics: a. The parish has had no one in the range that attends regularly, and almost no one in the range. The bulk of the parish s regular people are in the and 65+ demographic. 3. Outreach and integration of new members into the parish: a. Outreach in the community is difficult, the parish has been here 100 years and operates on an everyone knows we are here model that has not accounted for the increasing bedroom community nature of the town. b. New growth over the past 20 years does not remain with the parish when the priest they converted with or arrived to leaves. Fr. Simeon expects this to continue, though he has taught that it is not a good option or a correct approach to Orthodoxy. DOW Assembly 117 Delegate Book 2

121 DOW PARISH ANNUAL REPORT for the Diocesan Assembly Parish Name and Address Saint Andrew s Orthodox Church 298 Bert Street Delta, Colorado, Photo Clergy Very Reverend Daniel Jones Subdeacon Cyril Stagner Reader David Pertz Reader Daniel Showalter Committees/Societies Our parish has a parish council and choir and dedicated servers in the Holy Altar. It also fundraises, cleans, sews, cooks, bakers, teaches church school, and runs a bookstore and library. Some of these tasks rotate weekly and some periodically. In general these functions are organized more or less informally and in most cases without a formal committee structure. Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities Our main activities the past year have centered around the liturgical life of the Church with Feast Days and Divine Services and the celebrations and social interactions that grow out of them. We have also hosted many visitors the past year including several clergy families. We have learned from guest homilies and visitor interactions. We are involved in local seasonal festivals and summer camp for the youth. There is a lively sense of cooperation and interaction among the parishioners that engage the parish in a family atmosphere beyond what are strictly speaking parish events. Outreach and Charitable Activities DOW Assembly 121 Delegate Book 2

122 Our charitable contributions include local food banks and the local homeless shelter, the Abraham Connection, the local correctional center choir and outreach, and also person to person in response to individual requests for help. We contribute to two regional monasteries and also to a county family services organization. We give nationally and internationally to charities such as IOCC, Mission Center, Zoe for life, Children s Welfare, Hogar Rafael and others. We support a priest and his family in Soroti, Uganda with whom we have a personal relationship formed during his visit to our parish. In particular we help support a parish and a mission he serves, along with several other families with livestock and seed and agricultural funding. We also, over several years, have contributed in large part to the construction of a regional medical clinic and a school for nearly 300 students, also in Soroti, Uganda, and associated with the same parish and its outreach. Major Challenges Faced Honestly our major challenge consists in the dynamics of living the Holy Gospel day to day, in the context of the Church and the world; and supporting the parish infrastructure that supports our own parish efforts, and also makes them available to the general public. Speaking poetically this might be described as keeping the doors of eternity, and the living presence of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, open and swinging within the human hearts of the faithful and also on the corner of Third and Bert Street in Delta, Colorado, at Saint Andrew s Parish facility which is open to all. We take to heart the words of the Saint who says, The doors of the church ought to be open and the bells rung! Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October to September 2018 We expect to host our Archpastor and Father in Christ, Archbishop Benjamin, for our parish feast day. We also expect to welcome an incoming clergy family at the beginning of 2018 and transition into new parish leadership. We hope and expect that the entire new year coming will be a special event, by the grace of God, in service to Our Lord Jesus Christ and the proclamation of His Holy Gospel, through the personal lives of the Faithful, and the corporate expression of our parish fellowship in the Holy Orthodox Church, the local Body of Christ. Hierarchal Hierarchical Visit with Archbishop Benjamin for our 45 th Anniversary (8/17) 2. Completed the beautification of our Nave: new ¾" wooden floor, 4 large oriental rugs, 30 made-to-order custom, padded wooden linkable chairs, "Theotokion blue paint on all walls. (This project had already been completed, when vandalism to an outside shed and sprinkler system led to the floor being flooded (underneath the wood), requiring the floor to be replaced. We filed a claim with our insurance company, who tested the old vinyl tile under the wooden floor and found it contained asbestos. The insurance company covered the expense of the asbestos abatement, which ultimately saved us ~$20K the "silver lining" in this unfortunate event! During this process, we worshipped downstairs in the church hall, which offered a certain intimacy and openness not experienced upstairs in the church.) 3. Painted the exterior of the church long overdue Outreach and Charitable Activities 1. Monthly Charities: We collect free will offerings and add additional funds from our budget for a selected Orthodox charity every month 2. OCMC: We are currently sponsoring two OCMC missionary families Michael, Lisa & Liam Colburn; and, James Hargrave and family ($300 per month) 3. Dipes 'n Wipes (a Gap Ministry of Love INC of Littleton): We have given away 10s of thousands of diapers & wipes to families in need. Major Challenges Faced 1. "Sunday only" participation mentality by the vast majority of our parishioners, cradle & convert. 2. The negative impact of starting St. Tikhon mission parish esp. on St. Herman OC. We lost energetic doers, active leaders. While we are financially stable, thank God, we still have not recovered the positive momentum, numbers, and energy that we had before establishing this mission. 3. Seek to develop a 5-yr (and 10-yr?) Strategic Growth Plan/Vision our parish community Upcoming Special Events / Anniversaries: October to September Hierarchal Visit with Archbishop Benjamin for our 46 th Patronal Feast (August 8/9, 2018) 2. Summit Ave. Pueblo, CO Photo Clergy Priest Zechariah Lynch Committees/Societies Parish Council (six members plus rector) Church School Eternal Mysteries Bookstore Since October Highlights of Top Three Activities 113 th Parish Anniversary; we hosted Abbot Sergius of St. Tikhon's Monastery, the wonder-working icon of St. Anna, and the semi-annual Rocky Mountain deanery meeting. We have tried a few outreach methods, all of which have not directly brought anyone into the church. But we believe that we must continue to try according to our abilities to propagate the Gospel, Holy Orthodoxy. Men sow, God brings the harvest. This year a wonderful activity (qualitatively speaking) is the fact that the community seems to be coming together as a Christian family in a more profound manner. This essential family characteristic has been an important draw to inquirers. Outreach and Charitable Activities Support a Priest program through OCMC Periodic collections for the persecuted in the Middle East (IOCC). Other special collections are taken periodically and sent to various local and national charities. Participation in the local right to life activities. Sporadic local humanitarian needs that we try and meet within our capabilities. Major Challenges Faced There always seems to be some kind of physical challenge, most of all for a smaller parish. One could list finances, small pool of people, and so forth. Ultimately these things are not insurmountable; possibly our own small faith in the Lord and His goodness, at times, is the greatest hindrance and challenge. Upcoming Special Events/Anniversaries - October to September th Feast Day Celebration (Nov. 8 th ) Host the local Saints & Sinners tour (provides a venue in which to show our church building and give a presentation on Orthodoxy) DOW Assembly 128 Delegate Book 2
