Dear Apostles of Divine Mercy, Now that the month of December is approaching, we look forward to Advent, a time of renewing our awareness of the Christ Child. It is also a very special time to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of our Apostolate. The title of this month s Newsletter is Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Let us take time to reflect on the importance of this coming special year and the message that Pope Francis has given to us as we begin this Jubilee. The Holy Year will open on the 8th of December 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This liturgical feast day recalls God s action from the very beginning of the history of mankind. This Year is unique because it is based upon a theme : the call to mercy. It builds on the central content of the Gospel message and intends to call the church once again to its missionary priority: to be a sign and witness (of mercy) in every aspect of its pastoral life. With the opening of the Doors of Mercy and the granting of Indulgences, it will offer us many opportunities to receive grace. Missionaries of Mercy will be designated for every diocese for the whole duration of the Holy Year, but with a special concentration during the period of Lent. The Holy Year of Mercy will be an opportunity to encourage Christians to meet people's "real needs" with concrete assistance, to experience a "true pilgrimage" on foot, and to send "missionaries of mercy" throughout the world to forgive even the most serious of sins. The motto, "Merciful Like the Father," he said, "serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure." During this period of time we especially remember that Jesus appeared to St. Faustina as a baby and child with no other clear purpose than to express His tender love for her and bring joy to her heart. Few saints in the history of the Church were as devoted to the Child Jesus as St. Faustina was. His smallness inspired trust, joy and wonder. As we approach the season of His birth, let us always remember that God is with us. He was a living presence that she grew to appreciate throughout the year. He was to her a constant source of joy and inspiration. As we begin this Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, and as we wait for our Lord s Second Coming, and the celebration of His birth, let us take advantage of this time of grace and pray more. May you and yours have a Blessed, Holy Christmas. Shirley Oleskiw, EADM Director Page 2

Advent The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world (Jn 1:9) The actual season of Advent came into being toward the middle of the sixth century. Its orientation was entirely different from Lent, which was already established. At first, the Advent Season was determined as the six Sundays leading up to Christmas. Pope St. Gregory the Great ( ) reduced them to four, perhaps hoping to more clearly mark the difference between Advent and Lent. Before the seventh century, Christmas was a secondary feast, especially in Rome. But it came to take on more and more importance. Advent evolved in the same way. It became more solemn. Also, its orientation changed. From being a time to prepare for Christmas, it became a time to attend to the glorious return of the Lord. Today, the Sunday liturgies celebrate Advent in its double perspective of waiting for the Second Coming of the Lord (First and Second Sundays) and the immediate preparation for the feast of Christmas (Third and Fourth Sundays). The Catechism of the Catholic Church says this about Advent, "When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for, by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for His Second Coming" (CCC #524). Through the Advent Liturgy we share in the longing and preparation for the coming of the Messiah by the ancient Chosen People. This in turn helps us to long for and be prepared for His Second Coming. Jesus told Faustina, that the message of mercy is urgent because the world needs to prepare for His Second Coming. Speak to world about My mercy.it is a sign for the end times; after it will come the Day of Justice (Diary, 848). You will prepare the world for My final coming (Diary, 429). Tell souls about this great mercy of Mine, because the awful day, the day of My justice is near (Diary, 965). Our Lady also speaks to St. Faustina, You have to speak to the world about His great mercy and prepare the world for the Second Coming of Him who will come, not as a merciful Savior, but as a just Judge. The angels tremble before it. Speak to souls about this great mercy while it is still the time for granting mercy (Diary, 635). by Shirley Oleskiw Page 5

Rosa Mystica Request of Our Heavenly Mother for the Hour of Grace: 1. To be started from 12 noon until 1 p.m. (one full hour of prayer); 2. During this hour the person making the Hour of Grace either at home or in a church must put away all distractions; 3. Begin the Hour of Grace by praying three times the 51st Psalm with outstretched arms; 4. The rest of the Hour of Grace may be spent in silent communication with God, adoring the Sacred Host, meditating upon the Passion of Jesus, saying the Holy Rosary, praising God in your own way or by using favourite prayers, singing hymns, etc. History: During the period of November to December 8, 1947, the Blessed Mother appeared to Sister Pierina in a little church in Montichiari, Italy, eleven times. On the first appearance the Blessed Mother told Sister Pierina She wanted to be known as the Mystical Rose and that an hour of grace should be kept at noon, December 8 th, in all the Catholic Churches of the world. The Blessed Mother wanted this to be known through all Italy, and the entire world. It was November 16, 1947 when Sister Pierina was finishing Her Thanksgiving after Holy Communion when she saw a great light. She then saw a vision of the Blessed Mother as the Mystical Rose. Sister was so deeply moved by the stunning beauty of Our Lady that she began talking to Her. All of a sudden a gentle force made her kneel down in front of Our Lady. The Blessed Mother spoke these words. "My Son is so greatly offended by the sins of impurity. He is already planning to send the deluge upon the people, for their destruction, but I have asked Him to show mercy, and not send the destruction. So that is why I have appeared, to ask for penance and atonement for the sins of impurity."on the 22 nd of November, Sister Pierina felt the overwhelming urge to go to church at 4:00. The Mother Superior, four Sisters, and a group of friends accompanied her. They were all saying the Rosary when the Blessed Mother appeared as before. Again, Our Lady asked for penance. She said, "Penance is nothing more than accepting all our crosses daily willingly. No matter how small, accept them with love." At this time She told Sister Pierina to come again on December 8 th at noon. "This will be my Hour of Grace." The Sister asked how she was to prepare for this Hour of Grace? To which the Blessed Mother said, (Cont d on page 7) Page 6

with prayers and penance. Pray the 51 st psalm with outstretched arms three times. During the Hour of Grace, many spiritual graces would be granted. The most hard-hearted sinners will be touched by the grace of God." The Blessed Mother promised that whatever a person asked her for during this Hour of Grace (even in impossible cases) would be granted to them, if it was in accordance with the Will of the Eternal Father. On the morning of December 8 th, people began arriving at the little church at 8:00 in the morning from neighbouring towns. By noon, some 10,000 people had gathered to see the Blessed Mother In the most gentle and loving voice, Our Lady smiled and began to speak [to Sister Pierina]: "I am the Immaculate Conception, the Mother of my Beloved Son, Jesus. I want to be known as the Mystical Rose. My wish is that every year on the 8 th of December, at noon, an Hour of Grace will be installed. Many spiritual graces and physical blessings will be received by those who pray, undisturbed, during this hour." Reference: Felician Sisters printed this article in their magazine. December Prayers for Advent: Here are four suggested prayers for each of the Four Sundays of Advent in the Traditional Roman Liturgy. They can be recited when lighting the Advent candles. First Week O Lord, we beseech Thee, stir up Thy power and come; that by Thy protection we may deserve to be rescued from the threatening dangers of our sins, and to be saved by Thy deliverance. Who lives and reigns with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Second Week: Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the ways of Thine Only-Begotten Son, that through His coming we may attain to serve Thee with purified minds. Who lives and reigns with Thee. Amen. Third Week: Incline Thine ear to our prayers, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and brighten the darkness of our minds by the grace of Thy visitation. Thou Who art God, living and reigning. Amen. Fourth Week: Stir up Thy power, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and come, and succor us with great might, that by the help of Thy grace, what is hindered by our sins may be hastened by the bounty of Thy mercy. Thou Who art God, living and reigning. Amen. Reference: Mary & the Saints by Tan Publications Page 7

What Are The Priorities In Your Life? What are the priorities in your life? Are you proudest of your fancy house you live in, the fancy cars or toys you own, your high-paying job? Do your children know and love God, spend time with their children, and have happy marriages? Our actions speak much louder than our words, and where your treasure is, there also will be your heart. Scripture tells us, Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart also be (Mt 6:19-21). St. Faustina s goal in life was to do only God s will, and to be a reflection of His great mercy. Jesus told her, May you constantly unite yourself with Me through love, for this is the goal of the life of your soul. This act is an act of the will. Know that a pure soul is humble (Diary, 576). Pope Francis tells us that love and mercy is necessary and that is what families need to hold them together. He talks about love of God and neighbor, not love of money, materialism, and things of this world that rot and rust away. We must be humble and let this love be central to our intentions, overcoming fear, envy and lust. When we love, success in not measured in terms materialism, or how powerful we can be. Love and mercy is rooted in prayer, kindness and humility. Success is measured by how much love we have in our hearts, and the humility in our souls to hear and do the Will of God, and change our attitudes as needed. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 8 14th Annual EADM Meeting, Thursday, January 7, :30 pm, pm Annual Meeting, Annual Reports Coffee and dainties Please plan to attend.

Ways to Get Ready for Jesus Birthday How can we prepare well during this Advent Season for Jesus coming at Christmas? To make our celebration of Christmas truly joyful and Christ-centered, here are some customs and practices that can help us: Receive Jesus in the Sacraments. Advent is an ideal time for attending the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass more frequently, or daily if possible. At Mass, we have the wonderful opportunity to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist because He desires to nourish us while we journey through Advent. This is a time of repentance and deep conversion, so we must try to receive God s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Follow the Daily Mass Readings. Through His inspired Word in the scriptures, God desires to direct our steps. As we reflect on His Word, He can prepare our hearts to receive our Savior at Christmas. Choose a time of the day most suitable to reflect on the goodness of God. Spend Extra Time in Prayer. Make it a habit to pray together as a family, especially by saying prayers before meals, and encourage group prayers like the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet in your home. Practice Extra Works of Mercy. The spirit of giving and caring in families is very important. Create a joyful, thoughtful, and kind atmosphere during Advent. Open a Window Every Day on Your Advent Calendar. Children enjoy the countdown to Christmas. The Advent Calendars provide either a reflection or an image to mediate on. Share Something with the Less Fortunate. It s always a good idea to set an example of giving. Encourage family members to give something up and donate it to the poor. Light the Candles on Your Advent Wreath. An Advent Wreath provides an excellent opportunity for the family to live the Advent Season, by making a circle with four candles, and evergreens. Three purple candles and one pink candle are all very rich in symbolism. Make Small Personal Gifts. Something homemade can add a special touch to our commercial Christmas purchases. by Shirley Oleskiw Page 9

Our Lady of Guadalupe The Apostolate of the Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy is under the patronage and protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She appears as the Immaculate Conception and is with child. This is a mystery, as with God there is no time. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, when she appeared in Mexico City on December 9, 1531, to an Aztec Indian named Juan Diego. Through the image, she evangelized the Aztec Indians about God and the necessity of ending human sacrifice. There are many aspects about the Grace of Guadalupe. First is significant because the heroine, so to speak, is the Holy Mother of herself. She is the central figure in it. As we read and study, the story of Guadalupe we will feel closer to the Holy Mother Mary than ever before. She ceases to be a distant and a dim apparition and assumes a clear and tangible personality, which invokes greater and greater tenderness and respect the nearer we come to it. This story gives us hope, because the Blessed Mother chose an elderly man to carry out her mission. Thus the latter part of his life was glorified by such a grace that has seldom illumined the lives of mortal men. Some of this glory is ours to share, and in the reflection of it shine joy and fulfillment for every one of us. Our Lady of Guadalupe teaches us that the Holy Mother is always the Holy Mother, no matter in which dress she wears or in which apparition she appeared. How can we doubt that in her infinite wisdom she knows what aspect of her grace will be most comprehensible to her children, most helpful, most inspiring! Each side of herself which she reveals throws new light on her mercy and her beatitude; and she leaves to us the form our devotion will take. In every way she has chosen to come to us, we must remember that she is Our Mother, that she is approachable and that if we fail to recognize this, we are forfeiting one of the sweetest and most sacred experiences of life, both in this world and in the world to come. Since my first visit to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2002, I have witness endless miracles of all kinds, which I attribute to our Holy Mother. Just as the world has experienced her miracles and intercession by the hundreds of thousands over the last 475 years (Cont d on page 11) Page 10

we to have been graced here at our Centre. Not only through the miracles received by the pilgrims that have come with me on pilgrimage every year, but also by the graces that a first class relic of the tilma, would be gifted to us to have here at our Chapel of the Eucharistic Apostles of Divine Mercy in Regina. Our Holy Mother always leads us to her Son. We should not be surprised or overwhelmed by this great grace that has been bestowed upon us. After all she is our Mother, and what best do mothers do then comfort, strengthen, protect, console, and advise their children. She knows that her children are human beings, with human frailties and human fears. She understands all, and understanding, forgives. After taking more than 14 pilgrimages to this Holy Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I still marvel that the devotion and the simplicity by which the Mexican people love and venerate her. In every taxi, bus and public transportation an image of our Blessed Mother is displayed. In most of the homes, in a niche, an image is hanging to show us that they have consecrated their lives to this Holy Mother. They walk for endless miles every month to be present and offer their lives, babies and children to the Holy Virgin at the Shrine. Only by going and experiencing the throngs of people who come to the Shrine, can one really appreciate the simplicity and love these people have for Our Lady of Guadalupe of the Americas. Spirit in the Basilica itself there are only respect and reverence, praise and thanksgiving. Their Mother s House is their heaven on earth. Hour after hours Masses, praise and worship continues throughout the days, years, decades and centuries. All this began by a visit of Our Queen of Heaven on December 9th in 1531, at a deserted hill. Juan Diego, a poor peasant, responded to her request and thus we still can venerate her image on this holy piece of ground. by Shirley Oleskiw Sample of Flag Divine Mercy Flags, Get Yours Today During this Jubilee of Mercy, we would like to see a flag flown at every church, school and many homes to let others now that we are not afraid to exhibit our faith. 12 The Practice of Pilgrimage 14. The practice of pilgrimage has a special place in the Holy Year, because it represents the journey each of us makes in this life. Life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim travelling along the road, making his way to the desired destination. Similarly, to reach the Holy Door in Rome or in any other place in the world, everyone, each according to his or her ability, will have to make a pilgrimage. This will be a sign that mercy is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be an impetus to conversion: by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us. The Lord Jesus shows us the steps of the pilgrimage to attain our goal: Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back (Lk 6:37-38). The Lord asks us above all not to judge and not to condemn. If anyone wishes to avoid God s judgement, he should not make himself the judge of his brother or sister. Human beings, whenever they judge, look no farther than the surface, whereas the Father looks into the very depths of the soul. How much harm words do when they are motivated by feelings of jealousy and envy! To speak ill of others puts them in a bad light, undermines their reputation and leaves them prey to the whims of gossip. To refrain from judgement and condemnation means, in a positive sense, to know how to accept the good in every person and to spare him any suffering that might be caused by our partial judgment, our presumption to know everything about him. But this is still not sufficient to express mercy. Jesus asks us also to forgive and to give. To be instruments of mercy because it was we who first received mercy from God. To be generous with others, knowing that God showers his goodness upon us with immense generosity. Merciful like the Father, therefore, is the motto of this Holy Year. In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him. What a beautiful thing that the Church begins her daily prayer with the words, O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me (Ps 70:2)! The assistance we ask for is already the first step of God s mercy toward us. He comes to assist us in our weakness. Exerts from Bull by Pope Francis. Page 12

Novena in Honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe The Feast Day to our Lady of Guadalupe is Dec. 12, and these Novena prayers are from December First Day: Dearest Lady of Guadalupe, fruitful Mother of holiness, teach me your ways of gentleness and strength. Hear my humble prayer offered with heartfelt confidence to beg this favor (state your intention) Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Second Day O Mary, conceived without sin, I come to your throne of grace to share the fervent devotion of your faithful Mexican children who call to you under the glorious Aztec title of Guadalupe. Obtain for me a lively faith to do your Son s holy will always: May His will be done on earth as it is in heaven...our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Third Day O Mary, whose Immaculate Heart was pierced by seven swords of grief, help me to walk valiantly amid the sharp thorns strewn across my pathway. Obtain for me the strength to be a true imitator of you. This I ask you, my dear Mother.. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Fourth Day Dearest Mother of Guadalupe, I beg you for a fortified will to imitate your divine Son s charity, to always seek the good of others in need. Grant me this, I humbly ask of you...our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Fifth Day O most holy Mother, I beg you to obtain for me pardon of all my sins, abundant graces to serve your Son more faithfully from now on, and lastly, the grace to praise Him with you forever in heaven..our Father, Hail Mary, GloryBe. Sixth Day Mary, Mother of vocations, multiply priestly vocations and fill the earth with religious houses which will be light and warmth for the world, safety in stormy nights. Beg your Son to send us many priests and religious. This we ask of you, O Mother. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Seventh Day O Lady of Guadalupe, we beg you that parents live a holy life and educate their children in a Christian manner; that children obey and follow the directions of their parents; that all members of the family pray and worship together. This we ask of you, O Mother...Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. (Cont`d on page 14) Page 13

Eighth Day With my heart full of the most sincere veneration, I prostrate myself before you, O Mother, to ask you to obtain for me the grace to fulfill the duties of my state in life with faithfulness and constancy Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Ninth Day O God, You have been pleased to bestow upon us unceasing favors by having placed us under the special protection of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Grant us, your humble servants, who rejoice in honoring her today upon earth, the happiness of seeing her face to face in heaven. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. Our Lady of Guadalupe, according to your message in Mexico, I venerate you as "the Virgin Mother of the true God for whom we live, The Creator of all the world, maker of heaven and earth." In spirit I kneel before your most holy Image which you miraculously imprinted upon the cloak of the Indian Juan Diego, and with the faith of the countless numbers of pilgrims who visit your shrine, I beg you for this favor: to be a generous, self-sacrificing, faithful Marian Catechist all the days of my life. Remember, O Immaculate Virgin, the words you spoke to your devout client, "I am a merciful Mother to you and to all your people who love me and trust in me and invoke my help. I listen to their lamentations and solace all their sorrows and their sufferings. I beg you to be a merciful Mother to me, because I sincerely love you and trust in you and invoke your help. I entreat you, Our Lady of Guadalupe, to grant my request, if this should be the Will of God, in order that I may "bear witness to your love, your compassion, your help and protection." Do not forsake me in my needs. Amen. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. 15 Week Twenty-one Diary, READING ASSIGNMENT TO PREPARE FOR THIS WEEK; Scripture Jn 13: 34; Jas: 26-27, Catechism #2196 WEEK OVERVIEW The readings focus on the human tongue, and how we can use it to be critical and judgmental of others, or give glory to God. The readings should call us all to reflect on our interactions with others. The readings bring to light the fact that the tongue is a small member but it boasts of big exploits (Jas 3:5). LEARNING AND DISCUSSION: 1) Do you tremble when you think about giving an account of your tongue? (Diary, 119) 2) Are we as demanding and judgmental of ourselves as we are of others? (Diary, 128) 3) Reflect on ways that you have fallen short since last meeting regarding use of the tongue. LESSON GOALS At the end of the discussion, members should understand: The need to be careful on how we use our tongue, That we need to avoid being judgmental and less exacting on others, focusing our energies instead on personal spiritual growth and development. Week Twenty-two Diary, READING ASSIGNMENT TO PREPARE FOR THIS WEEK; Scripture Jn 15: 18, Catechism #2559, 2706 WEEK OVERVIEW The writings discuss that if we follow in Christ s footsteps we will be misunderstood, rejected and humiliated. Satan will use our discouragement and anxiety to retard our spiritual growth. It is through our own misery that the Lord will show us his mercy. LEARNING AND DISCUSSION: 1) Was Sister Faustina ever misunderstood and humiliated? 2) Why is humility so important for spiritual growth? 3) Were you misunderstood recently? LESSON GOALS At the end of the discussion, members should understand: That following in His footsteps requires sacrifice and suffering, Humility is critical for spiritual growth, as it opens doors to receiving God s grace.
