2 Sisters and Brothers in Christ: On March 1, 1948, Saint Catherine Labouré Parish became the first parish in the world dedicated to Saint Catherine Labouré who had been canonized in For 70 years, our parish has been a community praying, believing, and living as disciples. As we prepare to mark our platinum anniversary, it s a time to look back with grateful pride, embrace the present with joy and faithfulness, and look to the future with renewed hope. We give thanks for all that has brought us to this moment; the hearts, minds, hands, bravery, risks, determination, sacrifices, hard work, generosity, and the lives poured out in prayer and service. Our parish was founded with 900 members. Today we have over 2,620 households and close to 7,000 members. As our parish family quickly grew, so did our buildings and activities. But more importantly than that, so did our love for God and neighbor. This edition of Disciple Details provides an overview of the many activities and special events occurring this year in Saint Catherine Labouré Parish community. It outlines many of our opportunities to pray and worship, learn and grow in our faith, and share our time and talent. It also witnesses to our priority of reaching out to those in need. Whether you were here when the doors opened in 1948, joined the parish anywhere along the way, or are with us for the first time, we welcome, invite, and encourage you to become involved. Join us in knowing, living, and sharing our faith through special events, ongoing programs, amazing ministries, and organizations. Our recently refurbished and renewed Shrine Church reminds and challenges us to renew ourselves as the living stones that build the Church. The beauty of our windows is only surpassed by the beauty of the hearts and lives of every member of this parish community. We are in this together. With hearts raised in thanks and praise, we honor our past, celebrate our present, and look to a future filled with hope! Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, pray for us. Saint Catherine Labouré, pray for us. Happy 70th Anniversary! Love and prayers, Father Neil Sullivan Pastor STAFF Pastor Very Reverend Neil S. 3 praying CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD Sundays, September 10, 2017 through May 20, :30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses Children s Liturgy of the Word is an option for children in grades K-4 and takes place during the readings, homily, Creed, and General Intercessions of the Mass. The children are dismissed before the readings where a catechist proclaims and explains the readings at the children s level of understanding. They return to the church during the offertory of the Mass. Children s Liturgy of the Word will not be held on Holiday Weekends. FUNERAL LITURGY PRE-PLANNING WORKSHOP Thursday, November 9, :00 p.m. Leo Hall A death, whether expected or sudden, brings with it a flood of many emotions, a flurry of activity, necessary tasks to be accomplished, and important moments of grace, reflection, and prayer. It is a challenging time to make all the decisions that need to be quickly decided upon. One of the best gifts you can give yourself and your family is to indicate your funeral liturgy preferences and desires in advance. The Funeral Rites are among the most beautiful and consoling liturgies of the Church. What are they? Why are they so important? What are the options? This workshop walks us through the Funeral Rites and answers those questions with sensitivity and candor. Topics to be covered will include the Funeral Mass, wakes and viewings, burial, eulogies, cremation, readings, music, ministers, and family participation. Attendees will receive all the materials and resources needed to help them prepare their own or a loved one s funeral liturgy. BLESSING OF A CHILD IN THE WOMB Did you know there is a special blessing for a child before birth? The Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb was established to support parents awaiting the birth of their child, to encourage parish prayers for the family, to recognize the precious gift of the child in the womb, and to foster respect for human life within society. Our priests and deacons are available to celebrate this special rite with expecting parents. Please contact the parish office to make arrangements. LITURGICAL MINISTRIES LITURGICAL MINISTRY: SERVING GOD AND HIS PEOPLE Would you like to be a liturgical minister? The liturgical ministries of the Church are an excellent opportunity to fulfill our baptismal call to praise and worship God and to be of service to one another. The celebration of the Sacred Liturgy utilizes the talents and gifts that God has given this community to the fullest extent. Whether participation is through behind the scenes preparation and planning or through a public role of service within the Mass, parishioners help our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries: Altar Server, Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Sacristan, Usher, Hospitality/Greeter, Cantor, Choir Member, Musician, Church Cleaner, Church Decorator, or Shrine Church Docent (tour guide). We are happy to help you discern what way God may be calling you to serve. For more information, contact Joreen Kelly, Director of Worship, at x103 or jkelly@sclhbg.org. 1 LITURGICAL MINISTERS ORIENTATION TO REFURBISHED SHRINE CHURCH Thursday, August 24, :00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Shrine Church Friday, August 25, :00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Shrine Church All Sacristans, Ushers, Hospitality Ministers, Lectors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will be given an orientation to our refurbished Shrine Church including direction and clarification on how each liturgical ministry will be accomplished in our renewed sacred place. The Novena includes the novena prayers, a short homily, Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and is followed by confessions. While you may take a self-guided tour any time the church is open, docents (official tour guides) will be available at these special times to show and explain the extraordinary elements, symbolism, and enhancements of this House of God and the Home of His People. Celebrate with our parish community as Bishop Ronald Gainer celebrates Mass and blesses the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal. A reception will immediately follow on the parish grounds.
