3 Creed BCP 326 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. In the 19th century, Anglo-Catholic members advocated a name change that reflected the church s Catholic heritage. However, alternative names, such as American Catholic Church were regularly rejected by General Conventions. The church s evangelical wing opposed this type of name change since it felt that the Protestant label accurately described our church s reformed character while acknowledging that our church was led by bishops or Episcopates. By the 1960 s, opposition to dropping the word Protestant subsided. At our 1964 General Convention, a preamble was added to the church s constitution recognizing The Episcopal Church (without the word Protestant ) as an alternative designation while still retaining the earlier name. In 1979, our General Convention voted to use only The Episcopal Church in the Oath of Conformity during the Declaration for Ordination. This evolution of our name can be followed in our BCP s. In the 1928 BCP, the title page reads, According to the use of the The Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America, whereas the current BCP s title page states, According to the use of the The Episcopal Church. Please note whether we can credit you as the source of the question. A l l S a i n t s One of my favorite church holidays during the liturgical year is the celebration and remembrance of All Saints. It is on November 1st of every year that we remember those who have gone before us and have been mentors, leaders, caregivers, and much more to us. And it is also a day to be reminded that we are all saints through the power of God s grace and love at work in our lives. It is with this dual idea that we are empowered to hope in a hope-less world, love in a judgmental environment, and peace in a violent culture. With the examples of those who mean so much to us and taught us to follow God s Will and with the power of the Holy Spirit in our own lives, we are reminded to be Beacons of Hope now and today.
