I.S. 239 Name Class ID November 17, 2015 Objective: SWBAT identify the characters and examine their behaviors as possible suspects/criminals (ch 3&4). Do Now: PASS FORWARD YOUR SIGNED VOCAB QUIZ IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO ALREADY. If You owe any work, see me to make corrections. Take out your copy of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Have out the HW for Review of content. We will be playing Victim OR Volunteer.
Reminders: Independent Reading Assignment #2 due November 20 (Friday) Genre: Mystery Questions are online and it is YOUR responsibility to print out the rubric. HW#12- Chapter 5&6 due November 18th- Questions are posted online. You will need ATTWN to be on you at all times! There will be book checks. 11/25/15- INDEPENDENT READING BOOK APPROVAL- Non-Fiction This is under Autobiography/ Biography on your list. THIS IS CERTAINLY A GENRE I WANT YOU TO EXPLORE.
Answer the following question in your notes. Restate the question in your response. What are some things that all of these characters have in common?
Please note: If you do not know what a word means, take the time to look it up. It is helpful! General Macarthur's note reveals, "one or two of your old CRONIES are coming." Cronies means friends In reference to Lombard it says, "legality had not always been sine qua non." This means "something of importance". This means legal action was not very important to him... Kind of important to keep in mind for a murder mystery, no?
Chapter 3: The voice Everyone enjoyed a lovely dinner. It's calm and quiet. The voice reveals that they are all accused of committing a crime. Everyone panics. Mrs. Rogers faints...weird. They find the gramophone that played the record.
You are charged with the following indictments... CHAPTER 3: THE VOICE GRAMOPHONE RECORD
The name of the record is Swan Song. A swan song is someone's last performance, like an athlete, a singer or actress. There's a legend called "Swan Song". Here's the legend: It is believed that a swan is silent all of its life. It never makes a sound. Then, right before it dies, it sings a beautiful song. Why do you think Agatha Christie chose to call the record with all of their crimes on it, Swan Song?
The following people explain why they are on the island: Mr. Rogers Emily Brent Vera Claythorne Tony Marston Dr. Armstrong General Macarthur Philip Lombard Mr. Blore One of these characters were definitely lying... BUT WHO!? Who's lying? How do we know this?
In Chapter 3 the guests compare notes about what brought them to Indian Island. They realize that they have been tricked. How do you think they feel at this moment? What brought them to Indian Island and how would this have been avoided? GREEDY SELFISH NAIVE LACK OF COMMON SENSE
WHO IS U.N.OWEN U.N. OWEN = UNKNOWN (Gasp!) I can't believe it! Who invited us here??????
Chapter 4- The focus moves from who turned on the record to the accusations made against all of the "Prisoners at the bar". The characters deny the accusations in an uproar. Thoughts and accusations are flying! The first to address their alleged crime was Justice Wargrave. What was his defense? He was doing his job. Seton was an accused murderer. He just "concurred" with the verdict. Armstrong recalls differently...
Activity: Work with a partner to analyze each characters defense. Track each characters confession or excuse that makes him/her seem innocent. Use your critical thinking skills to determine who you feel is capable of NOT ONLY committing the crime he/she is accused of BUT ALSO orchestrating the events on the island. Be prepared to discuss!

Review- If you had to pick one character to be acquitted of the crimes to follow, who would it be? Explain why you were able to make such a form decision using evidence from the text.
13. What are the various reactions of the guests after hearing the accusations?
Chapters 1-3 Questions 1. What attributes of the characters help you understand something about their backgrounds? 2. Agatha Christie opens the novel with a shifting point of view unusual in the mystery
