4 The need of a framework No harmonized nor agreed framework for sport statistics ESSnet report for Culture statistics proposes a general framework for cultural participation that could be adapted to sport: ü ü ü Amateur practices; Attending/receiving; Social participation/volunteering proposes to use the following data sources: ü ü surveys (EU-SILC, EHIS, TUS various years) Eurobarometer (ad hoc modules on "Sport and physical activities" 2009 and 2013) 4

5 Proposal for a framework for participation in sport practices statistics In terms of sport participation, 's sport statistics will encompass the following dimensions: Active participation: in order to know how many people practice sport/do some physical activity Attendance at live sport events: in order to know how often people attend live sport events without participating actively (i.e. going to matches as spectators) Social participation/volunteering: in order to know how many people are members of sport clubs/associations and/or do some voluntary work for a sport club/ association. 5

8 Active participation Time Use Survey (TUS) Managed by Non-mandatory survey A group of questions (item n.6) aims to investigate on the time spent by people doing: Ø Physical exercise Ø Ø Productive exercise Sport related activities Currently data available for 15 countries from the 2000 round A survey with newly designed questionnaire has been carried out in 2010 à New data will be available in the second half of

9 Active participation Eurobarometer and 2013 ad-hoc modules: Sport and physical activity Managed by European Commission - DG Communication Ad-hoc modules Main characteristics: UNIT: For Eurobarometer 2009 module, 26,788 European citizens (aged 15 years and over) in the 27 European Union Member States. For Eurobarometer 2013 module, 27,919 European citizens (aged 15 years and over) were interviewed in the 28 European Union Member States SAMPLE: multi-stage, random (probability) sample according to population size and to population density. The sampling points were drawn systematically from each of the "administrative regional units" (in compliance to NUTS II classification) UNIVERSE: derived from population data MODE OF DATA COLLECTION: face-to-face interviews at home in the respondents' mother tongue AVAILABLE BREAKDOWNS: Sex Age (15-24, 25-39, 40-54, 55+) Socio-professional status (Self-employed, Managers, Manual workers, House workers, Unemployed, Retired, Students) 9

10 Attendance at live sport events The EU-Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) Managed by Statistical unit of the survey: all household members, aged 16 years and over. Data collected through personal interviews Ad-hoc module on social and cultural participation (2006) Ø One variable on attendance in sport events: PS040 - Number of times attending live sport events Data broken-down by: Sex Age groups (16-17 years, years, over 65 years) Income (poor, non-poor) A new round of the survey has been carried out in 2015 à New data will be available in the second half of

11 Attendance at live sport events Adult Education Survey (AES) Managed by First round carried out between 2005 and 2008 New round of the survey took place in 2011/2012 à special optional module on cultural participation was added to the standard questionnaire Ø One variable on attendance in sport events: Number of times attending live sport events Geographical coverage: only 15 countries completed this module 11

18 For participation: Some information from surveys (EHIS, TUS) is not updated and does not have a good geographical coverage In the meantime, is considering retrieving data from the 2009 and 2013 Eurobarometer ad-hoc modules on "Sport and physical activity" but the dissemination in Eurobase of data from external sources is not possible For the other areas to be treated: Isolation of fully sport related codes not straightforward (often mixed up with cultural and recreational dimensions) 18
