3 9. (i) Ali regularly went to the Post Office early in the morning with the hope of receiving a letter from his only daughter Miriam. She was married and had left his house five years ago. She had not come even once to meet Ali, nor had she written a letter to him. (ii) The poet says that rich men try to get their statues erected and monuments made so that they would be remembered forever, but none of these survive the ravages of time and the men are forgotten. (iii) Michael was shocked after reading the 'Miracle Recovery' story because the name of the person who recovered was Sebastian Shultz whom he thought he knew. He had been playing his games with the same named person and thought everything was real. (iv) Calpurnia feared something miserable would happen to Caesar. She felt this because of her dream in which she saw Caesar's statue with many spots, out of which blood was oozing out. Also, her fears were affirmed by what the watchman had seen and the weather that was outside. It clearly depicted that the sculptor had very well understood the feelings of the king. 10. It is absolutely true that relationships are built upon trust. The stronger the concrete of trust, the stronger the building of relationship. But trust is a two way street. In a true relationship, there should be no hidden secrets. 11. John Hallock made two mistakes which led to sourness in their relationship. First, Hallock tried to conceal facts from Lavinia. She was his wife and had every right to know what the real story was. Secondly, Lavinia doubted her husband and considered him a cheater without going into the detail of things. Her trust was overcome by jealousy. Things would not have been in such a mess if John had told Lavinia the truth and Lavinia would have trusted her husband enough to find the real truth before deciding to leave him. Part A : The Holocaust is the name given to the murder of six million Jews by German Nazis in World War II. Her diary gives a true insight to the Terror of the Holocaust and it has also impacted the public's knowledge of the Holocaust. This Holocaust was the worst genocide of the Jews who were. blamed for the current poor economic state in Germany. Therefore, Jews were fired from their jobs, had to flee to other countries. They were forced to work in German factories and then sent off to concentration camps which was a place where people were kept like animals, tortured, starved and people ultimately died. Anne's diary mentions about her father shifting to Amsterdam and then to this hiding place, a small annexe where her father worked also. The reason that Anne's family had to go into hiding was a direct result of what the Nazis called the 'final solution' to the 'Jewish question' which was the extermination of all the Jews. On 28 th September, 1942, Anne wrote that not being able to be outside upsets her more than she can say. She is terrified that their hiding place will be discovered and that they will be shot. In bits and pieces, the entries in her diary point towards the Holocaust. On 9th October, 1942, she reports on the harsh and inhuman conditions in Westerbork, the labour camp in Holland to which Jews were being sent. On 27 th March, 1943, Anne reacts to an announcement by the Germans that all Jews are to be deported from German occupied territories. She refers to the victims as poor 'people shipped off to slaughterhouses like sick cattle. On 31st March, 1944, she reacts to the news that Hungary has been occupied by German troops. 'The million Jews in that country are doomed', she writes. 3

4 Or Gifted and Friendly : Margot Frank is Anne's sister. She is three years older than Anne. Margot is beautiful and gifted and always excels in school. Anne and Margot are not close and Anne feels that her parents favour Margot over her. It may be that Anne is jealous of her sister, although she never openly admits this. She writes in one entry that Margot gets on her nerves constantly. But later in their stay in the annexe they reach an understanding and become more friendly, even writing letters to each other in which they reveal their feelings. No Close Bonding Between Sisters : Anne has mentioned in her diary that both sisters did not form a close bond though they stayed together in the annexe. Sometimes Anne tried to be friendly with her sister but that did not work out fruitfully. Margot was not able to provide any emotional support to her younger sister. Anne could not think of confiding anything to her sister as it would not remain a secret. Parents' Favourite : Margot is more close to her mother, which could probably be one of the reasons why Anne is jealous of her. Margot and Anne's parents always favour Margot during quarrels, according to Anne. But Margot loves Anne, treats her like a friend and is not at all jealous of Anne, unlike the latter. Part B : Helen enjoyed reading various books. She read numerous books with a wide range of themes and topics. It was during her first visit to Boston that she really began to read sincerely. She was permitted to spend a part of each day in the Institution library, and to wander from bookcase to bookcase, and take down whatever book her fingers lighted upon. The words themselves fascinated her. Her mind must have been very impressionable at that period, for it retained many words and whole sentences; and afterward, when she began to talk and write, these words and sentences would flash out quite naturally, and her friends wondered at the richness of her vocabulary. From "Little Lord Fauntleroy" she developed true interest in books. During the next two years she read many books. They included "Greek Heroes," La Fontaine's "Fables," Hawthorne's "Wonder Book," "Bible Stories," Lamb's "Tales from Shakespeare," "A Child's History of England" by Dickens, "The Arabian Nights," "The Swiss Family Robinson," "The Pilgrim's Progress," "Robinson Crusoe," "Little Women," and "Heidi". She also loved "The Jungle Book" and "Wild Animals I Have Known." The ancient Greece, exercised a mysterious fascination over me. It was the Iliad by Homer that made Greece my paradise. In her fancy the pagan gods and goddesses still walked on earth and talked face to face with men and in her heart she secretly built shrines to those she loved best. She loved the whole tribe of nymphs and heroes and demigods no, not quite all, for the cruelty and greed of Medea and Jason were too monstrous to be forgiven, and she used to wonder why the gods permitted them to do wrong and then punished them for their wickedness. She also read the Aeneid by Virgil, which tells the story of Rome s legendary founder and proclaims the Roman mission to civilize the world under divine guidance. She says that Virgil is serene and lovely like a marble Apollo in the moonlight; Homer is a beautiful, animated youth in the full sunlight with the wind in his hair. So her imagination flew from Greece to Rome and further. Therefore she says how easy it is to fly on paper wings! From "Greek Heroes" to the Iliad was no day's journey. However she thought that exams created obstacles in her reading for pleasure. Or The main cause of the trouble was a story The Frost King which she wrote to send as a gift to Mr. Anagnos on his birthday. Mr. Anagnos was the Director of Perkins Institute for the Blind. Helen wrote this story in the autumn after she had learned to speak. Having returned from Fern Quarry, one day Miss Sullivan told her about the beauty of new foliages. Her only aim to write the story was to please Mr. Anagnos and to prove to her friends that she could accomplish what many think to do but only few attain success in putting words in a systematic order. Little did she know that the publication of the story would shatter the glass house of her fantasy and splinters of disgrace would continue to prick her conscience for a long time to come. On the suggestion of her friends and teacher, the title of the story was changed from Autumn Leaves to The Frost King. 4

5 Helen posted the letter to Mr. Anagnos who was delighted to receive this unexpected gift from a blind and deaf girl. He published the story in a report of the Perkins Institute. The publication of the story was the pinnacle of her happiness. But after the publication of the story, the fact came into light that almost the same story had appeared before her birth in a book named Birdie and His Friends, under the title The Frost Fairies. It was written by Miss Margaret T. Canby. The thoughts and language of the two stories were so akin to each other, that it was evident that Helen had heard the story of Miss Canby and that her own story was a plagiarism. It was a great shock to Helen and she felt much, disgraced. Her friends began to doubt her talent and looked at her with suspicion. Helen tried her best to recall if she had ever heard Miss Canby s story, but she did not remember. Mr. Anagnos, though deeply troubled, believed her innocence. A few days after this sad incident, Helen went to attend Washington s Birthday celebration. The night before the celebration, a teacher asked her questions related to the Frost King. Though she strongly denied to have ever heard Miss Canby s story, she (the teacher) drew the conclusion from her conversation that Miss, Sullivan might have told Miss Canby s story to her and Helen remembered the story which she wrote under the title the Frost King. Now Mr. Anagnos came to believe that he was deceived. He turned a deaf ear to all her pleadings and claims of innocence. He also arrived at the conclusion that Miss Sullivan and Helen stole Miss Canby s story and presented it to him as Helen s own creation to influence him and win his favour. Helen was presented before the court of investigation consisting of eight members and Ms Sullivan was asked to leave. She was questioned and cross questioned. The aim of the judges was to make her acknowledge that she knew Miss Canby s story and she deliberately got it published as her own composition to impress Mr. Anagnos and win his admiration. Though Helen firmly denied their charges, when she came out of the room she did not notice her teacher s caresses and the confidence of her friends. That night she wept bitterly and wished that she might die before the appearance of dawn. But slowly and gradually, time healed her wound given by disgrace and made her oblivious of what had happened. Miss Sullivan had never read Miss Canby s story. Later after much investigation and discussion, Miss Sullivan and Dr. Graham Bell reached the conclusion that Helen might have read Miss Canby s story during her stay with Miss Hopkins. Whatever may be, Helen had to accept that she must have read Miss Canby s story and that long after she, had forgotten it, it came back to her so naturally that she thought it the child of her own mind. After this sad incident, many people wrote letters of love and sympathy to her. Miss Canby also wrote to her that someday, she would also write a great book. But she did not write anything new for a long time. Later she came to know that she had actually heard Miss Canby s story because she used other ideas and sentences of that story in some of her letters. The reality was that she had absorbed the story so much that with the passage of time, she would use its ideas and language in her own compositions considering them as her own ideas and words. In this context, Helen quotes the view of famous English essayist and novelist R.L. Stevenson. He writes that a young writer instinctively tries to copy whatever seems most admirable to him. It is after a long practice and experience that he becomes able to express his own ideas in his own language. Helen accepted that she had yet not attained that state, but she did not accept defeat. She believed if others had succeeded before her, she too would attain success. This incident made her aware of the problems of writing, but it resulted in the loss of one good friend Mr. Anagnos. After the publication of Helen s The Story of My Life, Mr. Anagnos wrote to her that before the court of investigation he cast his vote with those who were in her favour. For two years Mr. Anagnos held the belief that Helen and Miss Sullivan were innocent but later he changed his view. Helen wrote this account of the Frost King case because it was important in her life and education. She neither defended herself nor did she lay blame on anyone else. 5
