Evelyn was nervous on her first day at the Royal Academy of music in London. Evelyn was nervous on her first day at the royal academy because it was not only daunting for any teenager fresh from a Scottish farm, but this inspiring musician faced a bigger challenge than most, she was profoundly deal. 2. He began by tuning two large drums to different notes. He asked her not to listen through ears. He implored her to try to sense it in some other way. Evelyn suddenly realized that lower one from the waist down Forbes repeated the exercise, and soon Evelyn discovered that she could sense certain notes in the different parts of her body. This is why she felt indebted to Ron Forbes. 4. Men with bushy beards trouble Evelyn. Evelyn functions effortlessly without hearing. In the discussion with the author, she never missed a word. She said men with bushy beards gave her trouble because it is not just watching the lips, it s the whole face, and especially the eyes, which helped her lip-read.

Life was terrifying before for Kong Cecilia because there were letters and numbers everywhere, on every signboard and in every newspaper and since she was literate she couldn t understand any of them. B) It was a life of dependency. It was a life of dependency for Kong Cecilia who had to use her children as a support, a time when they probably should have depended on her more than her on them. Looking back on that time, she felt that it was unfair on her part, but there was nothing she could have done to help that situation. She was helpers and illiterate. C) It was a time when my thumb was my best friend. Kong Cecilia s thumb was her best friend because she put thumb impression for paying rents and other things. This could so easily have been by the pen. D) I was underpaid and cheated. Many a time, Kong Cecilia was underpaid and cheated because the only way she could keep track of the money that was owed to her was by identifying people by a beard they kept, a moustache they sported or their hair slyer. E) I blushed with embarrassment. Before she knew how to read and write, Kong Cecilia would be lost because she could not read signboard and used to blush in embarrassment. 3. A) What was the golden opportunity that Kong Cecilia got? When a group of people came in pursuit of spreading literacy, Kong Cecilia was motivated even at her age because she thought that that was a golden opportunity for her to learn how to read write and more than that to hold her head high in dignity and self respect in the secure knowledge that she had gained entry into the ranks of the neo-literate. B) Who provided it to her? A group of conscious people held literacy classes.
3 C) When were the classes held? The literacy classes were held in the evening. D) What were the problems she had with studies? Even though Kong Cecilia was very happy to be able to attend the literacy classes, she experience feelings of tedium and laziness. 4. Make a list of at least four things that Kong Cecilia can do now that she can read and write. a) She is able to help her grandchildren in their studies. b) She is now able to maintain calculations, and to draw up a rough and ready budget for her daily expenses. c) Even at home, she is able to calculate her savings, put it in the bank and make estimates. d) She can read signboards. Birds. IV. Modestly. V. Fear of humans. 2. Give reasons: A) The wasp was named Tangerine. The wasp was named Tangerine because marmalade made from Tangerine oranges was his favourite food. B) Tangerine thought that the man on the hill was a very important individual. When Tangerine went to see the centre of the valley, he saw a man on horseback up on one of the hills who seemed to be highly important individual messengers were arriving and departing all the time bringing him news from every quarter. So, Tangerine decided that that man must have been the famous general himself. C) The general stood on the high point on the hill. It was clear that the general had come up to this high point in order to get a good view of the fight. Also according to Tangerine, there was no doubt because he wanted to stay in a safe place himself. D) Tangerine wanted to apologies to the horse. Tangerine thought if he could sting the general s horse, he might possibly accomplish something to mess up the battle planes. Tangerine hopped on to the horse behind the general and sting the poor fellow on the flank. After having done
4 this, Tangerine felt that it was a dirty trick to have played on the horse and he wanted to apologies to him afterwards. E) The bombasteronians took to their heels. When Tangerine stung the horse, he gave one bound and shot off down the hill with Tangerine and the general as fast as he could go. By that time the armies were on their way towards the centre of the valley. Tangerine crawled along the horses flank and stung him in another place. Then he went further still. When they reached the level in the bottom of the valley where the cavalry were already charging, Tangerine stung him a third time. On and on he went straight across the flat and up the other slope. Seeing their famous general in full flight leaving the battlefield at great speed, the bombasteronians were completely disheartened and demoralised and they took to their heels too, bringing an end to the battle. F) Tangerine says it was he who won the battle. The general of the smitherneenians got no end of decorations and honours for the victory of Bakerloo. But, according to Tangerine it was actually he who had won the battle and hence he wanted a little more marmalade as a treat. 3. List all the reasons why Tangerine disapproves of wars. A) To Tangerine and the other wasps, all wars seemed like a stupid waste. From neither end of the beautiful valley, armies would come with cannons and horses. For hours, they would shoot off evil smelling gun powder blowing some of the trees right out of the ground by the roots and destroying a lot of wasp s nests. B) Even abler they had fought for hours. They would go away again, leaving hundreds of dead men and horses on the ground. And that too wasn t the end of the war. C) In a year or two, they would be back again for another battle ruin the landscape some more. Chapter: KALINGA: THE TURNING POINT Word meaning: 1. Horrific : Terrible. 2. Ashoka gave up conquests forever and never went to war again. This was the resolution. B) Why is Ashoka described as a unique ruler? Generally kings would have triumphantly celebrated their victory and soon begun planning their next military campaign, however Ashoka did not do this he gave up conquest forever and never went to war begun. No other king is known to have given up war after winning a tough battle as Ashoka did he is unique in this extraordinary decision. C) What was his second resolution? Ashoka s second resolution was to dedicate his life and the huge wealth of his empire towards building a new kind of society where people lived by the rules of virtue and understood moral behaviour. So that they could enjoy the blessings of non-injury self control equable conduct and gentleness. Ashoka called these principals dhamma, the laws of good conduct and moral living. D) What was his new campaign in support of? Ashoka was leading a new army to fight for goodness, kindness, tolerance and gentle living he was trying to lay the foundation of a real civilization. E) How did he reach out to the many illiterate people in his kingdom? Officials in Ashoka s empire were instructed to regularly read out the royal orders carved on pillars and rocks to the people who were mostly illiterate. The other two metaphors used in the poem are that of a lamp which was oiled with ghee and securing this jewel after waiting for it endlessly. 2. That his frail and weak little brother could fight off bandits. 8. Would the neighbours react in the same way? No according to the narrator, the neighbours would not have reacted like his brother; they would deem it lucky for the boy to have accompanied his mother or else would not have been safe. 9.
