Charlie Bucket s parents are very poor and live in a small house with both sets of his grandparents. Mr. Bucket worked very hard in a toothpaste factory and didn t make much money. All they ate was cabbage soup, and Charlie wanted chocolate more than anything else. Once a year, on his birthday, he got a chocolate bar all for himself. He often saw other children eating chocolate, but his worst torture was that he had to pass the largest chocolate factory in the world, owned by Mr. Willy Wonka, every day on his way to and from school. Chapter 2. Mr. Willy Wonka s Factory. Every evening after Charlie finished his supper he would go to the room where all four of his grandparents slept in the same bed to listen to their stories. One evening Charlie asked his grandparents if it were true that Wonka s Chocolate Factory was the biggest in the world. They all proceeded to tell him that is was and that he had invented many new kinds of candy and that his candy was sent to all parts of the world. Grandpa Joe, who at ninety-six was the oldest of the four, told most of the stories about Wonka. Grandma Josephine told him to tell Charlie about Indian Prince Pondicherry, which she was sure Charlies would like. Chapter 3. Mr. Wonka and the Indian Prince. Grandpa Joe told Charlie about Prince Pondicherry who wrote to Mr. Willy Wonka and asked him to come to India and build him a huge palace made entirely of chocolate. Mr. Wonka did it and told the prince to eat quickly because it wouldn t last long. The prince refused because he intended to live in it. 3 COURSE PLAN 2 3 Chapter 4-6 Chapter 7-9 ended up in a huge chocolate lake. Charlie thought Grandpa Joe was kidding him but all of the grandparents insisted it was true. Grandpa Joe told Charlie that no one ever goes in or out of the factory. Charlie realized he never saw anyone there but said there had to be workers. Grandpa Joe told him they weren t ordinary people. When Charlie asked him to explain his mother told him that it was bedtime. Have the student read Chapter 4-6 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 4. The Secret Workers. Grandpa Joe told Charlie that there used to be thousands of people working in the chocolate factory but Mr. Wonka fired them because other chocolate makers who were jealous had spies get jobs there so they could steal the recipes. He closed the factory, chained the gates, and he disappeared. People were sad until one day the factory came alive again. Nobody, not even Mr. Wonka, was seen but people could see shadows moving in the building. Grandpa said the workers had to be very tiny. Charlie s father came home from work with a newspaper that announced that the chocolate factory was going to be opened to a few people. Chapter 5. The Golden Tickets. Willy Wonka announced in the paper that he was going to let five children in the chocolate factory. He would take them through the factory and they would each receive a life time supply of candy. They had to find a golden ticket inside one of his candy bars. Grandpa Joe said he was brilliant because he would sell more candy than ever. Charlie said there was no way he could get a ticket because he only got one chocolate bar a year. Grandma Georgina reminded him that his birthday was the next week so he had a chance. Grandpa George said the ones who could buy candy bars every day would be the ones who would find them. Chapter 6. The First Two Finders. Augustus Gloop, a very fat boy found the first golden ticket. His mother said she was sure would win because he would eat many candy bars every day. The whole world was going wild trying to find golden tickets. On the day before Charlie s birthday Veruca Salt, the spoiled child of rich parents got the second ticket. Her father had hundreds of thousands of candy bars and had the workers in his factory open them. She threw tantrums until one was found. Charlies was hopeful that he would find a golden ticket in the bar he would get for his birthday the next day. Have the student read Chapter 7-9 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 7. Charlie s Birthday. As he expected, Charlie received a Wonka s Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight candy bar for his birthday. He sat on the edge of his grandparents bed to unwrap it while his parents waited expectantly at the door. All CHF3

He wanted to share the candy with his parents and grandparents, but they wouldn t. Charlie started off to school. Chapter 8. Two More Golden Tickets Found. The newspaper announced that there were two more winners of golden tickets. Violet Beauregarde, a disgusting girl who chewed gum all day long and bragged that the gum she was chewing was over three months old, won a ticket. Mike Teavee won the fourth ticket. He watched television all day long and did not want to talk to the reporters because they would interrupt his television show. Parents and grandparents were disappointed and sure the fifth ticket would go to another undeserving child. Chapter 9. Grandpa Joe Takes a Gamble. When Charlie got home from school, Grandpa Joe was the only grandparent awake, and he got Charlie to come to him. He had hidden a dime and gave it to Charlie to run to the store to buy another chocolate bar hoping the last golden ticket would be in it. Charlie hesitated, but Grandpa Joe insisted. Charlie rushed to the store and came back to his grandpa. Grandpa said they didn t have a hope but said there might be a tiny chance the ticket would be in it. Verucca is a plantar wart, which one gets on the sole of the foot. Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines 1 Chapter Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 10. The Family Begins to Starve. Winter came, and it was bitterly cold. The freezing wind blew through the cracks in the Bucket s home. Mr. Bucket lost his job because the toothpaste factory closed. The cabbage soup became thinner because of the lack of money, and Charlie became thinner and weak. The whole family was starving, but Charlie didn t complain and wouldn t even take extra food his mother offered. One day on the way home from school, he found a dollar bill in the snow. He headed to the shop and was going to buy one candy bar then take the rest of the money home to his mother. Chapter 11. The Miracle. Charlie bought a candy bar in the shop and quickly gobbled it down. The man gave him nine dimes as change, and he decided to buy another bar. When he opened it, he found the last Golden Ticket. The man got so excited he shouted it out and many people crowded around him. Some offered to pay him a lot of money for the ticket, but the man from the shop made them leave him alone. He told Charlie not to let anyone have it and to hurry home. Chapter 12. What It Said on the Golden Ticket. When Charlie got home with the Golden Ticket, Grandpa Joe thought he was kidding. When he realized it was true, the ninetysix and a half year old man, who hadn t been out of bed for twenty years, jumped out of bed shouting cheerfully. Mr. Bucket read the ticket to everyone. It said Mr. Willy Wonka was going to give the owner of the ticket and one or two members of his family a tour of the factory and a lifetime of delicious eatables. It was to happen the following day, and it was decided that CHF5

6 COURSE PLAN 2 3 Chapter Chapter Grandpa Joe would go with Charlie. Chapter 13. The Big Day Arrives. Great crowds of people came to watch the ticket holders go in the factory, so the police had to shield the children from them. Only Grandpa Joe came with Charlie but the other winners had both their parents with them. There was a lot of excitement with people identifying each of the children, remembering them from when they won the tickets. They were surprised that Grandpa Joe and Charlie were so thin and Charlie had no coat on. At ten o clock the gates opened and they saw Mr. Willy Wonka. Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 14. Mr. Willy Wonka. Mr. Willy Wonka was an odd man who wore: a black top hat, a tail coat of plum colored velvet; green trousers, and pearly gray gloves. He carried a gold-topped cane. He had a pointed black beard and sparkling eyes. He was very energetic. He excitedly met each of the children, and led them and their parents and Grandpa Joe into the factory. It was warm and pleasant inside and smelled wonderful. Willy led them down a long corridor, which took them underground until they stopped at The Chocolate Room. Chapter 15. The Chocolate Room. Mr. Wonka said the Chocolate Room most important part of the factory. The inside of it was beautiful with green meadows, a brown river, a waterfall going into the river, and huge glass pipes going down into the river from way above. Everything, even the grass and flowers were edible. He said the waterfall was the most important because it makes the chocolate. He let everyone taste a blade of the grass, which was minty sugar. Augustus took a big handful, and Violet had to put her gum behind her ear before trying it. Suddenly, Veruca screamed that she saw a little man. Soon they all saw five tiny men. When Charlie said they couldn t be real people, Mr. Wonka said they were and that they were Oompa-Loompas. Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 16. The Oompa-Loompas. Mr. Wonka explained that he went to Loompaland where the Oompa- Loompas were living in trees and eating caterpillars because the beasts in the forest would have eaten them up. They loved cacao beans but only got a few a year. Wonka told them that if they would go with him they could have all the cacao beans they wanted and they could even have chocolate, which was better. They all wanted to go, so he smuggled them over in packing cases with holes in them. They all live in the factory and love to sing and dance and could be mischievous. Veruca insisted that her father get her an Oompa-Lompa, and he told her she would CHF6

Wonka called an Oompa-Loompa and told him to take the Gloops to the Fudge Room and get Augustus out before he ruined the fudge. Five Oompa-Loompas on the other side of the river started dancing and singing a song about Augustus. Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 18. Down the Chocolate River. Mr. Wonka told everyone not to worry about Augustus. They were taking the next part of the journey down the chocolate river in Wonka s pink boat. It had many oars and Oompa-Loompas were rowing it. The Oompa-Loompas began laughing, which bothered Violet. Wonka said they were always laughing because they think everything is a joke. Veruca started begging her father for a boat like that, a chocolate river, etc. Charlie was very excited about everything but especially about Willy Wonka. Wonka filled mugs with hot chocolate for Charlie and Grandpa Joe saying they looked like they were starving to death. The boat went faster and entered a dark tunnel. Passengers were scared and Wonka laughed and sang a silly song. Everyone but Charlie and 1 Chapter Grandpa Joe thought he was crazy. After going past several rooms, the boat came to a stop. Chapter 19. The Inventing Room Everlasting Gobstoppers and Hair Toffee. The boat was stopped and they went into The Inventing Room. Wonka said it was the most important room in the factory because his secret new inventions were being made. His enemies would love to get in there. Everyone was warned not to touch, taste, or meddle with anything in the room. It was a huge room with all kinds of equipment. Something that looked like a marble came out of a machine. Wonka explained that it was an Everlasting Gobstopper, his invention that can stay in the mouth forever without getting smaller. He told him about his Hair Toffee, which makes hair grow over the top of the head and makes a CHF8

9 COURSE PLAN 2 3 Chapter Chapter moustache and beard. It was being tested and he said it was so no child would have to go around with bald heads. Chapter 20. The Great Gum Machine. Wonka took the group to a gigantic machine. He pressed some buttons, and after a lot of rumbling, shaking, and noise a tiny thing that looked like cardboard came out. No one could figure out what it was until Violet Beauregarde shouted out that it was gum. Mr. Wonka slapped her on the back and said it was the most amazing and fabulous and sensational gum in the world. Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 21. Good-by Violet. Mr. Wonka said that his gum was a three-course dinner, and it would change everything; no more kitchens or cooking. They didn t believe them. Violet grabbed it and began chewing. Mr. Wonka warned her not to do it. It tasted like tomato soup, and then turned to roast beef. Wonka kept telling her to spit it out, but she wouldn t. Soon she started turning purple and swelling up. Mr. Wonka said he hadn t quite got it right. Violet blew up like a big balloon, and Mr. Wonka called ten Oompa-Loompas to roll her to the juicing room. They rolled her into the boat and began singing another one of their songs. Chapter 22. Along the Corridor. Charlie was anxious about Violet and asked Mr. Wonka if she would ever be okay, and he answered that she would be de-juiced but would always be purple. He then rushed the group along the pink corridors quickly passing many interesting doors that were labeled as Eatable Marshmallow Pillows, Lickable Wallpaper for Nurseries, Hot Ice Creams for Cold Days, and Cows That Give Chocolate Milk. Every time Mike Teavee asked a question, Wonka ignored him by telling him to speak louder. At one door it said Fizzy Lifting Drinks, which Wonka said would fill one up with bubbles full of gas that would make you go up like a balloon and to get down you d have to burp. One old Oompa-Loompa drank some outside and went so high he never came back. He finally stopped at the room that said Square Candies That Look Round. Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 23. Square Candies That Look Round. Mr. Wonka led the group to the room labeled Square Candies That Look Round, and when they looked in, they all looked square but the Oompa-Loompas were painting tiny faces on them. Mike Teavee and Veruca Salt argued with Wonka that they were square. When Mrs. Salt told Veruca that he was lying, Wonka was very rude to her. When Wonka opened the door, the tiny faces turned and looked at him. He said, They re looking CHF9

10 COURSE PLAN 4 round! Grandpa Joe agreed. They went past the Butterscotch and Buttergin room where the Oompa-Lumpas were drunk from eating it. He then hurried them up going through more corridors and to a flight of stairs where he and the children slid down bannisters. The mothers were getting out of breath. Chapter 24. Veruca in the Nut Room. Mr. Wonka led the group to a door labeled The Nut Room. He told everyone to look in the glass panel but not to go inside because they would disturb the squirrels. There were one hundred squirrels shelling walnuts. When Mike Teavee asked why the Oompa-Loompas didn t do it he said that the squirrels could get the walnuts out whole and the Oompa- Loompas couldn t. The squirrels knocked their knuckles on the walnuts first to see if they were good. If it was a bad nut, it would be thrown down the garbage chute. Veruca insisted that she had to have one of Wonka s trained squirrels. When Wonka refused to sell one to her father, she opened the door and rushed in. She caught a squirrel and the others pinned her down, tapped her head, and threw her down the garbage chute as a bad nut. Her parents were upset because she was headed to the incinerator. First her mother and then her father ended up falling in the chute after her. Charlie was worried, and Wonka said the incinerator was only started every other day, so maybe they d be lucky. Down the corridor they heard the Oompa-Loompas sing a song about Veruca. Have the student complete the written assignment, due Monday. : Write a good paragraph about either Violet or Veruca telling what happened to her, why it happened, how she could have prevented it, and how you think she may have changed because of it. Now there were only Mike Teavee and Charlie left. Mike was tired and wanted to watch television. Mr. Wonka took them on an unusual elevator that was made of glass and could go up and down and sideways and anyways you want it to go. There were thousands of marked buttons on it, which would take them to any room they wanted to see. Mike pushed the Television-Chocolate button, and they took off sideways and fast. They had to hold on to keep from falling as it became like a roller coaster. Mr. and Mrs. Teavee were quite upset. Mr. Wonka warned them to be very careful in the room because there was dangerous stuff in it. Chapter 26. The Television- Chocolate Room. It was so bright in the room that everyone had to wear dark glasses. On one end of a large room, Charlie saw a huge camera on wheels and many Oompa-Loompas working silently on the equipment. On the other end was one Oompa-Loompa watching the screen of a large television set. He felt it must be dangerous because for once the Oompa-Loompas were so serious and they were wearing space suits. Wonka explained that if a camera can break a picture into pieces and send it to a television set, he thought he should be able to send chocolate in the same way. As he was explaining, Mike Teavee kept trying to correct him. Wonka told him he talks too much. When he got ready to show what he could do, he had to tell Mike Teavee to stand back because there were dangerous rays coming from the machine. He then had the Oompa-Loompas put a huge chocolate bar in front of the camera, it broke up in pieces and, it went into the television on the other side of the room. Wonka told Charlie to take it, and it was a delicious.small chocolate bar. Wonka said his invention could be used as an ad on television so people could try his chocolate bar at home. Grandpa Joe thought it was terrific. CHF11

Mike Teavee was very excited that the chocolate was sent by television. He asked Mr. Wonka if it could send other things, also. Wonka answered it could, so Mike asked if it could send people. Wonka said it might have nasty results. Mike ran before the camera saying he was going to be the first to be sent by television. Wonka tried to stop him telling him he would be turned into a million pieces, but Mike ran and pulled the switch. His parents became panicky, and Wonka told them he may be missing some parts when he came out. He eventually came out, but he was only an inch tall. He was excited that he was the first one to do it. His parents said he wouldn t even be able to go to school, but Mike was screaming that all he wanted to do was watch television. Mr. Teavee put him in his pocket to quiet him, and Wonka had the Oompa-Loompas take them to the stretching machine. The Oompa-Loompas went away singing another one of their songs. Chapter 28. Only Charlie Left. Mr. Wonka acted surprised that Charlie was the only child left, and exclaimed very excitedly that Charlie was the winner. He took them back to the glass elevator and pushed the button that said UP AND OUT. They shot straight up with no twists or turns, and went faster and faster until they crashed through the roof of the factory and were a thousand feet in the sky. Wonka pushed another button and they stopped and hovered like a helicopter. Looking down they saw the whole town. Wonka told Grandpa Joe that the elevator was run by one million candy power. Wonka said he saw the other children returning home. Have the student read Chapter and answer Study Questions. Chapter 29. The Other Children Go Home. The elevator hovered just above the gates of the factory where they could see the rest of the group. They were waiting for their lifetime supply of candy. Augustus Gloop was very thin because he got squeezed in the pipe. Violet Beauregarde had been de-juiced but her face was still purple. Veruca and Mr. and Mrs. Salt were covered with garbage. Mike Teavee was ten feet tall because he had been overstretched on the gum-stretching machine. Wonka said he was lucky because all of the basketball teams would want him. Mr. Wonka then told Charlie he had something very important to talk to him about, and he pushed a button to take them back in the sky. Chapter 30. Charlie s Chocolate Factory. The Great Glass Elevator was hovering over the town, and Mr. Wonka said he loved his chocolate factory and wondered if Charlie loved it, too. Charlie said he did so Mr. Wonka told him he was giving him the whole place to run when he was old enough. He was an old man with no relatives and wanted to give it to a young person who would run it the way he did and take care of the Oompa- Loompas. Charlie realized that was the reason he sent out the Golden Tickets. His parents, Grandpa Joe, Grandma Josephine, Grandpa CHF12
