hristopher and the Toy Monkey by Helen Kronberg Reprinted with permission from Highlights for hildren, Inc. 1 hristopher looked under the table. He looked in the cupboard among the pots and pans. 2 "What are you doing?" Mother asked. 3 "I am looking for Monk," hristopher said. 4 "Your toy monkey in my cupboard? hristopher, how silly. ut keep looking. He has to be around somewhere." 5 hristopher looked in the hall closet. He did not find Monk. ut he did find a piece of perfectly good string. He rolled it into a ball and put it into his pocket. 6 He looked behind the cushions of the sofa. He did not find Monk. ut he found a bright new penny. He put it into his pocket with the string. 7 Then he dumped everything out of his toy box. Monk was not there. ut hristopher did find the red crayon he had thought was lost. He put it into his pocket. 8 Maybe Monk is outside," hristopher said. He looked behind the big oak tree. Monk was not there. ut hristopher found an acorn. He put it into his pocket. 9 hristopher looked in the yard. He found a yellow mitten in the bushes. ut he did not find Monk. He stuffed the mitten into his pocket. 10 t the bird feeder hristopher found a soft, gray feather. He put it into his pocket. 11 Mr. Smith, next door, got a load of pebbles for his garden path. hristopher saw one that was purple and blue and brown. "That is pretty," he said. "Do you need it for your path?" 12 Mr. Smith laughed. He picked up a thin, flat pebble. "This is a good skipping stone. You may have them both." Page 3
13 "Thank you," said hristopher. He dropped both stones into his pocket. 14 hristopher found a big black button under the steps. It was just what he needed to make a spinner. nd he already had the string. He put the button into his pocket. 15 He raced back across the yard. He almost stepped on a fallen bird's nest. He picked it up carefully. 16 tiny speckled eggshell lay in the grass. Gently, hristopher laid it in the bird's nest. 17 The grass was rich with golden dandelions. hristopher put the nest and the eggshell on the porch step. Then he picked a big handful of dandelions. 18 His hands were too full to open the door. So he pushed the bell with his nose. 19 "These are for you," hristopher said when Mother opened the door. 20 Mother put the dandelions into a brown bottle. 21 hristopher took the tiny speckled eggshell out of the nest. He put it on the table. He put the bird's nest beside it. Then he emptied his pockets and put all of his treasures in a row. "Look at all the good stuff Monk helped me find," he said. 22 "You found your toy monkey?" Mother asked. 23 "Oh, I knew where he was all the time." hristopher ran to his room and pulled Monk out from under the bed. 24 Mother laughed. "If you knew where he was, why were you looking?" 25 "We were playing hide-and-seek," hristopher explained. "When you are playing hide-and-seek, somebody has to look." 26 "ut how could Monk help you find all that stuff? He was under the bed." 27 hristopher gave his toy monkey a hug. "If he had not hid, I would not have Page 4

esop and His ables by nna lores 1 Legend has it that esop was a Greek slave in He was a storyteller who taught life lessons via his stories. The lessons are known as "morals." In Western cultures, stories that have a moral are known as esop's ables. 2 There is little evidence that esop ever lived. So he probably did not write any stories. So who did? The world may never know. 3 What we do know is that all esop ables have common traits. Usually the main characters are animals with human qualities. They can think and speak like we do. nd always, the story teaches a lesson. 4 elow is a fable in the style of esop. What is the moral of the story? Read it and see if you can tell. The Young Goat and the Old Wolf 5 There was a silly young goat that lived on a farm. He was not like the other goats. They were friendly and well behaved. The young goat was not. He was always causing trouble. The farmer knew he had to do something to keep his herd happy. So one day, the farmer decided to put the young goat atop a barn. There he would be far away from the other goats. 6 The young goat was upset at first. The grass on the barn roof was dry and tasteless. He walked around the roof, trying to find a way down. When he could find no way off the roof, he grew even more upset. Then he realized that he was up higher than all the other goats. He could see things that none of the other goats had ever seen. 7 The silly young goat started running about the roof. Now he felt very important up there. He wanted the whole herd to notice him. He boldly claimed that he could see cities in the distance, and a great river, too. The other goats ignored him. This made him even bolder. He boasted to the entire herd that he could see farther than any other goat had ever seen. Still the herd ignored him. 8 Then the young goat spotted a wolf near the farm. "Hey, you useless old wolf!" the young goat jeered. "You're stuck on the ground while I'm high up in the sky. ome and catch me, if you can!" 9 The young goat laughed and pointed at the wolf, which made him very angry. The wolf came over to the barn and looked for a way to climb it. ut there was no Page 10
way up to the roof, and he could not get the goat. 10 "Don't be too smug, you silly young goat," said the wolf. "What goes up must come down. I will catch you yet!" 11 The silly young goat did a dance on the roof and kicked some dirt at the wolf. The old wolf licked his chops and walked into the woods. He sat in the shade of a tree to wait for the young goat to come down. The other goats just shook their heads and kept on grazing. Page 11
13 The wolf licks his chops and walks into the woods when the goat kicks dirt at him because he knows the goat will not be on the roof forever and will eat him when he comes down. he is tired and thirsty, and goes to lie down. he thinks the goat on the roof is crazy so he will eat one of the others in the herd. D he is hungry and goes to find something to eat. 14 The main problem in "The Young Goat and the Old Wolf" is that the young goat needs to find a way down from the roof. G can't get the attention of the others in the herd. H is afraid that the wolf will attack the herd. doesn't think he has to worry about the old wolf. 15 What is the lesson of "The Young Goat and the Old Wolf"? It's easy to be brave from a distance. What's good for one is good for the other. One bad turn deserves another. D It's best to be prepared. Page 12
16 Which word in paragraph 3 helps the reader know what traits mean? human G common H characters qualities 17 In paragraph 1, the word moral means life. lesson. character. D punishment. 18 In paragraph 8, the word jeered means teased. G praised. H eyed. spoke. Page 13
19 Read the first sentence of the summary below. Which of the following completes the summary above? His stories are known around the world, but little is known about the man himself. His stories always have a puzzle to solve. He told great stories that all had a moral. His works were lost among the ruins in ancient Greece and have never been uncovered. There are many clues from history that talk of a man named esop, but no lesson books survived. The world may never know who the true author of these stories was. D We may never know who wrote the stories, but we do know that esop's fables had common traits. They each taught a lesson and had human-like animals as the main characters. Page 14
20 How does the goat feel in paragraph 8? Stressed G Thankful H Worried Powerful 21 Read the web below. Which of the following best completes the web? The Young Goat The Goat Herd The Wolf D The armer Page 15
22 Read the web below. Which of the following completes the web? Story always has a happy ending G Story always begins with, "Once upon a time..." H Story is always based on facts Story always teaches a lesson Page 16
23 The reader can tell that the wolf is probably trying to find a way to reach the roof so he can catch the goat. moving on in search of an easier target. waiting in the woods for the young goat to come down from the roof. D anxious to get away from the silly young goat. 24 Which sentence from this selection shows that esop may not have been a real person? So he probably did not write any stories. G There is little evidence that esop ever lived. H Legend has it that esop was a Greek slave in He was a storyteller who taught life lessons via his stories.
