3 Hello. My name is Ksenia and I am a great fan of my city Saint Petersburg. It s so wonderful and mysterious that it seems to be a city from an old fairy tale. Well, follow me and I can open you one of its ancient secret. Today we are looking for Saint Petersburg Sphinxes, great guards of my favourite city. 5 Here you can see two great sphinxes of our city and you can hear their sad story. It was about 185 years ago, when our government decided to create a wonderful Egyptian Bridge. Sculptor Pavel Sokolov made these figures of sphinx and they were used like a model for Egyptian Sphinxes. And after that government forgot about them. They were thrown away and they didn t have any future. But some years ago people from organisation Mostotrest found them, made a huge restoration work and gave them new chance. Now we can see these lucky sphinxes here, in front of the office of Mostotrest. I think, they are watching this office and all kind people working here.

8 Our new stop and new sphinxes. They were created in 1783 and their mission was very interesting. More than 300 years there was a mineral spring right here. The master of the nearest estate, Kushelev-Bezborodko, decided to make a stone terrace for protecting that spring. It helped a lot of people, but it was destroyed during the Second World War. Many years later our experts could restore sphinxes but they couldn t save the mineral spring. We are very sorry about it and these stone monsters, I think, are too.

13 And here we could find very unusual and young sphinxes. They were created in 1995 by sculptor Mikhail Shem akin and architect V. Bukhaev. There are two different sizes of sphinxes faces. One side is nice and pleasant, and the other, looking at the prison, is ugly and awful. These sphinxes are like a part of sad Saint Petersburg history, part of our life: sometimes nice and sometimes full of sorrows.

17 And now we are guests of famous sphinxes of Egyptian Bridge. It was built in by engineers V. fon Tretter and V. A. Khristianovich. Very powerful and marvellous, this bridge got a second name: singing bridge, because of the sound of the bridge chains. The first wooden Egyptian Bridge was destroyed by accident and rebuilt many years later. But the sphinxes survived and we can enjoy watching them.

21 And these sphinxes are very interesting and unusual because they are made from pink granite. We don t know the name of their creator, but looking at them you can easily understand that he was a very talented person. As for me, I like these sphinxes because they seem to be very kind and warmhearted creations.

25 And here are the masters of Egyptian history of our city. These sphinxes came here from Egypt. They are more than 3500 years old. During their long lives they were guards of Amenkhotep s temple and they look like their great ancient master. They are very heavy, about 23 tones, and they are made of rare kind of stone. These noble sphinxes are full of mysteries. It is said that they could tell you a secret of pharaoh treasures but people said that it s very dangerous. And one more mysterious story about these sphinxes: there is a hidden information about ancient mystery on the paw of one sphinx. Who knows

28 Now we are near the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute. And in front of it you can see the nicest and the prettiest sphinxes of Saint Petersburg. They are especially loved by people of our city and they got their second name Cleopatras of Neva. They were created in 1811 by unknown sculptor and since 1966 these female guards have been watching this building and all people there.

31 This is the last stop of our sphinxes excursion and we are ready to finish it here, in the world-famous museum of Saint Petersburg Hermitage. We ve got an opportunity of visiting the Egyptian Hall of this unique museum. Culture and crafts of Ancient Egypt are presented here. Among great examples of arts you could see statue of Amenemkhet which was created in the 19 th century B.C. And I have to say good buy. I hope this short excursion was interesting for you.
