9 TUESDAY (CONT.) WT6 THE MYSTERY OF RICHARD III Kenneth Simons, Ph.D. Richard III, who ruled England for only two years ( ), is among the most maligned figures in history. Shakespeare portrays him as physically deformed, consumed with ambition, ruthless, and capable of any treachery including the murder of his brother Clarence and later the murder of his two young nephews, one of whom was the rightful heir to the throne. The legend endures despite the fact that virtually all of it, including his signature hunchback, is untrue. Our course looks at the specifics of Shakespeare s portrayal, the question of who Richard actually was, and finally at the deaths of the princes in the Tower. If Richard didn t do it, who did? Required reading for discussion: Josephine Tey, The Daughter of Time and William Shakespeare s, Richard III. Dr. Kenneth Simons, a Columbia Ph.D. in English and comparative literature, taught writing and literature at Columbia University and Wisconsin and Adelphi universities before joining the faculty of Syosset (NY) High School. Mr. Royal will illustrate his talks by playing on our baby grand piano. Michael Royal, pianist, composer, teacher and producer, is a former student of Jacques Abram at the University of South Florida. A foot-dragging Israeli government and a weak Palestinian one frittered away an historic opportunity to reach agreement, faced with opposition from Jewish settlers and from Hamas leaders unwilling to accept Israel s legitimacy. Then the dramatic Arab Spring the overthrow of the Tunisian government, the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, revolts in Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Libya. Turkey is less friendly to Israel and more friendly to Iran. Iran continues its own dangerous nuclear program. The world needs stable access to Middle Eastern oil and gas. The United States has a deep moral commitment to Israel; and can cheer Arab strivings towards democracy. A cyclical recession has weakened Western economies. NATO and the U.S are mired in a seemingly fruitless war in Afghanistan. They have intervened with limited effect in Libya. A nuclear-armed Pakistan becomes more and more hostile. More urgent than ever, in this election year, the class will strive to construct a coherent foreign policy for the United States. For Bob Garvin s bio, times and dates of his course see page 20. winter classesp page 19

14 WEDNESDAY (CONT.) WW10 LECTURE/RECITAL SERIES: FOUR SONATAS Robbert devries This series of lectures/recitals starts off with the performance and discussion of four piano sonatas (each from a different era) to demonstrate the way this musical form changed over time. The composers featured during these lectures are: Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven ( Pathetique ), Schubert and Grieg. Special attention will be given to the history and the reason behind these changes. Any and all questions relating to the subject at hand will be most welcome. Robbert devries, concert pianist, graduated initially from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Netherlands) and studied subsequently in Paris, Italy and at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Russell Sherman. He has served on the faculties of several New England institutions and continues to teach, lecture and perform. 1:00-2:30 pm Wednesdays Begins: 1/4 Ends: 1/25 WW11 JEWISH ARTISTS IN PARIS IN THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY Jean Joseph Renoux By the end of the 19th century Paris was a thriving community for Jewish artists who were creating some of the most avant-garde art of the century. These lectures will highlight and examine the lives and works of some of the most significant Jewish artists who lived and worked in Paris in the late 19th and early to mid-20th century. The first lecture will set the stage with the works of Mortiz Oppenheim, Maurycy Gottlieb, Simeon Solomon, Josef Israels and Camille Pissaro. The second part will cover the styles and influences of such great Jewish artists as Chaim Soutine, Jules Pascin, Amedeo Modigliani, Jacques Lipchitz and Marc Chagall, pioneer of modernism, has been referred to as the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century. Jean Joseph Renoux has been presenting history and art history programs and lectures for over 20 years throughout the U.S. He also leads group excursions to Europe, particularly Prague and throughout France, to explore its art, architecture and history. 1:00-2:30 pm Wednesdays Begins: 1/18 Ends: 1/25 Two sessions Members $40 Non-Members $45 WW12 LECTURE/RECITAL SERIES: CHOPIN THE TWENTY- SIX PRELUDES Robbert devries Nowhere in his music is Chopin more revealing than in his op.28 Preludes. In them we discover not only clues about his life, his character and his emotional condition at the time, but also (more importantly) his revolutionary ideas on keyboard technique and (in some cases) futuristic harmonies. Written between 1835 and 1839 they were received with great puzzlement by many at the time: Schumann pronounced them strange pieces and the musicologist Barbadette called it unhealthy music. Hans von Buelow gave each of them a title to be used at his recitals as guide to the listener. During this second of the lecture/recital series (see above for the first series) each of the Preludes will be played and discussed individually and (time allowing) all will be performed as a group at the close of the last session. See Biographical Sketch above. 1:00-2:30 pm Wednesdays Begins: 2/1 Ends: 2/22 winter classesp page 21
