You are by accident of fate alive at an absolutely critical moment in the history of our planet. - Carl Sagan On a dark, moonless night when the stars are bright and clear, you can see the planet Jupiter, just as people saw it thousands of years ago. Like all planets, Jupiter moves, and is constantly changing its position among the stars. For a hundred thousand years, and long before that, people have gazed into the star-filled skies. Somewhere along the way, a few among our ancestors looked a bit more closely than others. They noticed that among the countless stars, there were some that changed position, and they were filled with wonder and curiosity.

3 To the ancients, all objects in the sky were stars of one kind or another. There were longhaired stars (comets), shooting stars (meteors), and, on occasion, new stars that suddenly appeared. Most of the stars did not move, but there were five that did, and they were called planetoi for "wanderers." Night after night, century after century, we have watched the planets move amid the night sky. In recent years, dramatic discoveries in scientific research have widely spread, primarily due to computer technology. Yet, advances in science are still not able to answer most of the questions we have about the Earth and the other planets. We may never know our planet s true origin, why our magnetic field reverses when it does, when the next earthquake or volcanic eruption will occur, or why we are all here, living in a zillion different shapes and sizes. Maybe we are looking in the wrong places. Perhaps we need to look for the answers hidden within the Earth itself. Unlike the ancients, we go about our daily lives giving little thought to the influences of the Sun, to the fact that without gravity, we d be spinning off into space, or how a Chameleon can change its colors when it is colorblind. Few of us spend time wondering why nature is the way it is, where we all come from, and where we go from here. Most everyone is unaware that the Earth turns on its axis like a spinning toy top, wobbling to and fro at the North Pole until it eventually tips over. No one has ever considered that the mighty dinosaurs disappeared because they drowned in a global tsunami caused by a pole shift. We have long forgotten that the magnetic field inside our bodies lines up with the Earth s magnetic field, and when the Earth shifts, we physically shift with it. For many of us, our focus is engrossed on the stresses of daily life, but our bodies were not created to handle the amount of stress that we endure in the way that we tolerate it. In an ideal world, we are merely along for the ride; touching, feeling, tasting, and experiencing the natural world that the Earth has so graciously bestowed to all things. In nature, resources are free and unlimited, but over the past few hundred years, mankind has coveted them, and this has interrupted the Earth s ability to restore them.

4 Today, just being for a human being carries a hefty price tag, and this has led our species far down the wrong road. We have now reached a point on this journey where decisions must be made. Many of us don t even know what those decisions are because we have long forgotten the questions. Families, tribes, social classes, nations, and races have lost sight of the fact that we all share the same life within this Earthly paradise. The more complex societies become, the more conditions we place on each other and on nature. In our attempt to manage the chaos that we have created, we create more. Our edicts are unnatural laws of nature now; they no longer maintain a healthy relationship with the Earth. We have put giving back to nature on the back burner. The Earth is changing today, and in dramatic ways. There are patterns in the ancient geologic record that explain why natural disasters are increasing today, but we have not paid attention to these patterns. Only now, people are beginning to realize that something different is happening to our planet. But, drastically changing weather patterns, increases in powerful earthquakes, the rise in tsunamis and global flooding, astonishing volcanic eruptions, and powerful tornadoes still seem to inconvenience us more than stimulate us to better understand a very unpredictable Earth. Many disbelieve when faced with grave and imminent danger or a catastrophe. We just aren t getting it. We must realize that human beings have no influence over Earth events, so in order to survive as a species, we must change the way we look at them. Known as the normalcy bias, people tend to ignore the possibility that a disaster could happen to them. This often results in situations where people fail to prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to properly educate and inform the masses. People with a normalcy bias have difficulty reacting to disasters because most have never experienced one. They assume that since a disaster has never happened before, then it never will. This results in the inability to cope when a disaster does occur. No one should live their life anticipating disaster, but as we witness the chain of events occurring on the Earth today, we must be, at the very least, prepared for the unknown.

5 The normalcy bias often results in unnecessary deaths during natural disasters. The lack of preparation and bottom-line profits for housing developers leads to inadequate shelter, limited supplies, and useless evacuation plans, and this causes people to underestimate the effects of a devastating Earth event. Because there has been a lack of education concerning upcoming Earth changes, the normalcy bias has become an increasing global concern. By accepting the fact that imminent Earth events and natural disasters are a reality today, we can be more prepared and channel our money in the right direction. On April 20, 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano suddenly erupted 75 miles southeast of Reykjavik, Iceland. There were warning signs that this was coming, but we were not paying attention. Lava burst from the crater melting the Eyjafjallajokull glacier sitting atop the volcano, and its chunks were as big as a jeep. Little was mentioned about why this event occurred when it did, or when it would happen again. The newswires buzzed about how the Icelandic volcano affected the London premier of the newest Hollywood blockbuster, Batman, which had been forced to relocate from London to Los Angeles because of the eruption. People were angry that the volcanic ash grounded jets and delayed their flights. The focus was on the cost that the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull had on the effects of aviation, and the inconvenience to those holding useless airbus tickets. We have our focus on the wrong things. To best be prepared for future events like this, we must be willing to learn more about the Earth to understand them. Human beings must realize that we cannot stop natural disasters, but we can reduce their effects by learning how to accept them. We can change where we build our cities; we can reconstruct our massive bridges and highway systems; and we can change where we concentrate our populations. Accepting this type of change comes through awareness and a willingness to admit our limits. We must all embrace more respect for the Earth s inevitable power. In reality, we have no other choice. There will always be more questions about the Earth than there are answers. One mistake that we have all made is that we have stopped asking questions; nations no longer budget for the answers. History shows that organized religions and governments have impeded our wondering and discouraged our attention away from the dominant power of the Earth. The progress of Earth Science has fallen far behind industrialization because there are no possible means of direct experiments from which to profit - the lab is far too big. Controlling nature is out of our reach, and the possibilities of creating human technology that can manipulate nature will be

6 much too costly and dangerously irresponsible. Mankind s ability to control earthquakes, violent storms, and drastic weather changes is truly out of our grasp, but we remain frustrated with our impotence to dominate them, and continue to invest billions of dollars trying. Our understanding of the cosmos is really just left to faith and imagination, but it s human nature to want to know what lies ahead; what the future will be; how to plan; how to invest; what to buy; where to build. We have reached a point in human evolution where we must accept the fact that upcoming Earth changes will continue, and they will never be in our control - they never have been, and they never will be. We must cease ignoring natural disasters in the hope that they will simply go away, and we must admit that human survival does not rely on manipulating nature, but on learning how to go along for the ride. Humans are NOT driving this bus Mother Nature is. From the beginning of civilization, mankind s focus has been on the physical structure of the Earth and how to manipulate Nature. Today, we are witness to the harsh fact that human development has inserted a harmful cultural landscape over the natural environment, and over time, we have damaged our climate, the oceans, the land, and countless plants and animals. We have yet to realize that the ideal cities and developing nations that we have "created" are not real. They do not exist in the Earth s reality because they are simply characteristics of manmade concepts and creations that humans carry out to the extreme. Cities made of steel and concrete, and are filled with the waste from overpopulation. Modern societies focus on movie premiers, shopping malls, and airport departures - all are man-made constructs drawing our focus away from the imminent influences of what is real, and that realization is that the Earth determines what all life, your life, is like on this planet. Our villages, cities, states, nations, and countries are meaningless to the Earth s mountains, volcanoes, streams, rivers, oceans and seas. Our human world has become unnaturally divided from the natural world, and this reality isn t working for us anymore.

7 The Earth is our home, and it is an awesome place. We are the guests here, but we have overstepped our boundaries and worn out our welcome. Mankind s influences are no longer a natural part of the Earth s standard operating system. Our existence in the midst of nature has become parasitically out of balance. Symbiotic relationships are found everywhere in nature s niche, and are a very important part of nature. Symbiotic relationships usually last for a very long time, and are beneficial to the ecosystem. However, if they are contaminated, they can become deadly. If plants didn't have fungus living on their roots, they would die from a lack of water and nutrients, but if the fungus overcomes the plant, it loses its own life source and destroys both the plant and itself. Mankind is now facing this reality, and upcoming Earth events are forcing human beings to accept what we have parasitically done to the Earth - effects of what we have actually done to ourselves. We have the opportunity to do something about it, but the question to ask: will we? Technology is a remarkable thing and it has enhanced our quality of life, but it has also given us a false sense of security. Electronics, machinery, pharmaceuticals, fast-food restaurants, genetically modified foods, nuclear power, and the overabundance of man-made paraphernalia have created the illusion that humans are immune to outside influences. Humans wrongly believe that we can ultimately control nature and our environments. Technology has bred unnatural discrimination and has created a deviant struggle between the haves and have-nots. Money dominates modern life, and controls the destiny of both man and nature. Human beings have traveled too far inside a man-made world, and our focus is less on the planet than on securing our personal needs and desires. It s surreal to think that we build skyscrapers and nuclear power plants on top of earthquake zones. We construct double-decker bridges across miles of fractured oceans. We build cities

8 and airports at the bases of volcanoes, and design housing developments and hospitals on flood plains. Then we blame nature when earthquakes, volcanoes, and floods destroy our possessions. Our focus on money is distorting our awareness that this planet is mightier than the dollar. Nature can change in an instant, and it is, right now, right under our noses. No amount of money will ever change it. It s never too late to find our way back to living in harmony with nature - realistically living in harmony with nature. This, of course, is easier said than done, but will inevitably result in the most phenomenal change in human knowledge since the beginning of time. By adopting a new view of the Earth, we can thrust our wishes and desires in the right direction, into a place that is more down-to-earth, and certainly more in synch with the on-going power of this planet. * * * There is no doubt that the Earth is changing today, and we have no choice but to change with it. One helps the other understand where we have come from, where we are now, and where we are heading. By rewinding a very ancient geologic clock, we can look back in time to better understand what is happening to the Earth today. By realizing that Earth changes today are the same events that happened millions of years ago, we can better figure out how we fit into the greater cosmic plan. After millions of years of inactivity, our planet is on the move. The Earth s rotation on its axis has become increasingly unstable over the past 50 years, and the rise in violent storms, unseasonable weather changes, powerful earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes are signaling that the Earth s polar axis is shifting position. Simply put, the North Pole is changing direction as it has done many times before. We must acknowledge that this shift changes all life on Earth. No human influence will ever exist that is mighty enough to push against the power of nature. Life is a dichotomy of existence; we are all individual branches stemming from one Tree of Life, and thus, we are dependant on the planet for our survival. Once we remember this fact, the transformations will be so profound, the world as we know it will be forever changed for the better. Every detail of why we are here will be in harmony with the Earth, and as the Earth changes in the future, we can safely change with it.

9 Einstein once posed the question whether God had a choice in creating the Universe. The next time you gaze into the cloudless night sky far from the city lights, you might find the answer. Everything within the Universe is part of a larger, very meticulous and interconnected system that has been cycling and re-cycling within nature, for eternity. Earth, including humanity, is but a small piece in a much grander design, and this blueprint was created eons ago, long before humans walked the Earth. Einstein came closer than anyone to identifying the energy that creates matter. Some of the greatest minds in history have made discoveries so amazing, so astounding, their insights have changed the evolution of all mankind. Through their awareness, our understanding of the Earth is where it is today. We must not forget. * * *
