The Goddess In Art is a cable TV series that began in 1986 and ran until Dedicated to the Return of the Goddess, the series explored the legacy of this oldest tradition in art as well as feminist spirituality in contemporary art. The moderator, Starr Goode, interviewed scholars to uncover Her suppressed history and artists who were inspired by a radical re-imagining of the feminine. Bio: Starr Goode is a writer and teaches literature at Santa Monica College. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Marija Gimbutas (Part 1) One of the greatest scholars of the twentieth century, Marija Gimbutas through her work as an archeologist uncovered the symbolic language of the Goddess and provided a foundation for feminist spirituality. A conversation about the Neolithic Bird and Snake Goddesses and the egalitarian civilization of Old Europe. 3. The conversation reflects on the zeitgeist of the Goddess movement and the many books being published about Her and how much the Goddess has become a part of modern consciousness. A momentous time with Berlin Wall coming down and the end of the Cold War. Starhawk speaks of the importance of renewal through spiritual practice to avoid burnout from political activism. 6. She speaks about her work as a feminist shamanic healer and wisdom teacher. The conversation also explores the metaphor of the body of the Goddess as the sacred substance of the world. 7. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Elinor Gadon Elinor Gadon, author of The Once and Future Goddess: A Sweeping Visual Chronicle of the Sacred Female and Her Reemergence in the Cultural Mythology of our Time, is interviewed for the show. She discusses the necessity to resacralize the female body. The conversation touches upon her analysis of images of the Goddess cross culturally and throughout history. Gadon also speaks about the Goddess as a muse for contemporary artists who are creating insurgent images to transform our ailing world.

The Goddess In Art TV series: The Triple Goddess Joan Iten Sutherland, Buddhist meditation teacher and editor of Marija Gimbutas's The Language of the Goddess introduces an ancient trio: Maiden, Mother, Crone. We look at Classical and Neolithic images of these aspects of the Great Goddess and talk about the necessary functions each performs. 9. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Hallie Iglehart Austen Hallie Iglehart Austen discusses her book The Heart of the Goddess: Art, Myth and Meditations of the World's Sacred Feminine. A beautiful work with stunning images accompanied by insights into the origins and functions of each Goddess. The conversation turns to the classifications of Goddesses of Creation, Transformation, and Celebration and the meditations in her book to access the energies of these different Goddesses. 10. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Charles Sherman Painter and sculptor Charles Sherman discusses his fascination with the Goddess and his original interpretation of the Nine Muses rendered with the bodies of Paleolithic Goddesses. Also know as "The Egg Man" the conversation covers his cosmic eggs with black and white designs, his Bird Goddess Sheela na gig and the forces of creation and destruction all embodied in his painting Kreatia Kali. 11. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Maureen Murdock Photographer, psychotherapist and author, Maureen Murdock discusses her work on transforming Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey into a model for women in her book, The Heroine s Journey: Woman s Quest for Wholeness. She talks about the need to create a model for the specific psycho-spiritual journey of contemporary women. We also look at her meditative photography. 14. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Savina Teubal An interview with Savina Teubal, a biblical scholar, writer, and the founding president of Sarah s Tent: Sheltering Creative Jewish Spirituality. We talk about her ground-breaking work, Sarah the Priestess, her rereading of the Hebrew Bible's the first matriarch. In it, she recovers lost traditions of the matriarchs.

The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Janine Canan An interview with poet and psychiatrist Janine Canan to celebrate her acclaimed anthology, She Rises like the Sun: Invocations of the Goddess by Contemporary American Women Poets with illustrations by Mayumi Oda (a guest on another show). 16. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Jean Edelstein Artist Jean Edelstein shares her dynamic work including The Temple Series of large canvases inspired by the female presence of goddesses and priestesses dancing in celebration of the life force. We also see a video of a live performance of the artist making a painting inspired by the movements of a dancer, each bound to the other in spirit. 17. Touching upon her deep connection with mother earth, Mayumi shares her vibrant children's book, Happy Veggies. 18. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Christopher Castle A conversation with multimedia environmental British artist Christopher Castle. We talk of his passion for sacred sites as seen in his work oil paintings of the mysterious landscapes of Britain, Ireland, Poland, and Northern California! He shares his deep interest in geomancy, the living energies of the land and traditional earth-based cosmologies to find new ways of relating human culture to nature. We also look at his work with egg tempura and gold leaf creating icons of old and new Goddesses. 19. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Ruth Ann Andersen Artist and priestess Ruth Ann Andersen visits the show. Known for her full moon meditations and drawings which she began nearly thirty years ago, Ruth Ann talks about having found the Goddess in downtown Los Angeles while on her rooftop looking at the moon. As an artist, she focuses on the earth, the elements, and the harmony among all life. 20. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Miriam Robbins Dexter A conversation with Goddess scholar extraordinaire Miriam Robbins Dexter. We discuss her invaluable much used book Whence the Goddesses: A Source Book which traces the sources of early historic Indo-European (Greco-Roman, Indic, Iranian, Germanic, Lithuanian, Latvian, Slavic, Irish, and Welsh) goddesses and heroines, beginning with Neolithic iconography and continuing through the iconography and functions of Near Eastern goddesses. An accomplished linguist, Miriam translated texts from all of these cultures, so that the reader has the primary sources for all of these female figures, Miriam speaks

5 of the goal of her work as an honoring of the feminine divine as an important part of radical feminism. 21. The Goddess In Art TV series: Interview with Cheri Gaulke A conversation with Cheri Gaulke, a multi-faceted artist who creates artist books, installations, performance art, public art, and videos. In the interview Cheri discusses her involvement with the Feminist Studio Workshop at the Woman s Building where she embraced the notion that feminist art could raise consciousness, invite dialogue, and transform culture. she shares a video of her work with Sisters Of Survival who wore nun s habits in the spectrum of the rainbow and presented their anti-nuclear performances in Europe and the U.S. And we see a clip from a performance piece, This is My Body addressing religion and sexual identity. 22. The Goddess In Art TV series: Goddess in Natural World Joan Iten Sutherland, Buddhist meditation teacher and editor of Marija Gimbutas's Language of the Goddess comes to the show to talk about the Goddess as the original symbolic embodiment of nature and cosmos reaching back to the Neolithic and Paleolithic. Our conversation touches upon how our ancestors viewed the world as a sacred and alive place. 23. The Goddess In Art TV series: Goddess in Contemporary Art First show ever! I interview two Los Angeles based artists Betsy Richardson and Anna Homler. Betsy talks about her colorful geometric painting which reflect the shapes of the Goddess and the richness of nature. Anna Homler, vocal, visual and performance artist discusses her creation of the ancient character of Breadwoman musician. Her song Karu Karu, evoking the timeless quality of tribal sounds, became the theme music for the entire The Goddess in Art series. 24. Voice of the Goddess: Marija Gimbutas A documentary about the world premiere of the Marija Gimbutas's book, Civilization of the Goddess. Produced and directed by Lollie Ragana for Santa Monica City TV. An ecstatic evening with a euphoric crowd as Marjia delivers what she considers the best talk she ever game. The documentary is supplemented by interviews with Starr Goode who produced the book event, and scholars and long time colleagues of Marija Gloria Orenstein and Miriam Robbins Dexter.
