2 Programme : Registration and Coffee : Keynote Speech & Experiential Opening Ritual by Gillian Downie Birth of a Goddess, Inclusion of a Vampire, Grandmother Duck and Visiting Death: Exploring Archetypes through Dramatherapy There are universal patterns of being that we as humans find ourselves enacting. We can get caught up in always being The Mother, The Rescuer, The Martyr. Such patterns exist throughout all cultures and times and are evident in mythologies and traditional stories. The Saviour, The Creator, The Trickster, The Monster. What pulls us into some and not others? How can embodying archetypal images help us bridge into the unconscious and listen to ourselves in a new way? How can we use archetypes in traditional stories to find untapped resources in ourselves? : Refreshment Break :00: Concurrent Presentation & Workshop 1. Presentation by Steve Mitchell Archetypes and Aspects of the Self in short-term individual Dramatherapy In this talk Steve Mitchell will share an essay describing how in individual dramatherapy he works with both active and dormant unconscious Archetypes and their conscious Aspects. They both guide and sometimes impede clients in meeting their goals. These include the seeker, saboteur, guide, caregiver, warrior, threshold monster, destroyer, amongst others. 2. Workshop by Melanie Beer & Alice Nicholas The Wounded Healer - An Archetype of a Dramatherapist... it is his own hurt that gives a measure of his power to heal. This, and nothing else, is the meaning of the Greek Myth of the wounded physician." (Jung) This experiential workshop will explore the concept of archetypes within the dramatherapeutic process through the myth of 'Chiron - the Wounded Healer'; an archetype often associated with the qualities of the dramatherapist's role. When we work with an awareness of our own personal wounds, we are best able to meet and tend to the wounds of others. "...if Chiron would embrace the underworld and so lose the pain of his wound..."

Presentation by Keith Hackwood No Certainty, Only Adventure Using transpersonal understandings of the psyche, together with experience of drama and movement & creative arts approaches, this talk tracks the fertile possibilities of therapeutic work with Archetypes. Using examples from culture alongside case material we will explore the implications of radical presence in the service of healing. 2. Workshop by Esyllt George Embracing Death: Image and the Unseen - We will explore our attitudes and feelings towards death through metaphor and image. Death is often associated with darkness, but what is our relationship to death when imagination enters into a visual dialogue in the darkness of soul? : Refreshment Break : Performance by The Golden Thread Playback Theatre Company: Your Stories from the Conference An opportunity for you to process and reflect on your own and others' experience through the medium of improvised theatre and music. The Golden Thread will spontaneously and immediately recreate and give shape to your moments, thoughts, feelings or impressions of the day. We have performed at conferences, charity events and for private functions. 4 Conference Contributors Alice Nicholas Alice is a dramatherapist currently working primarily with children and young people within mainstream and special educational needs settings based in the South West. Alice qualified from the Roehampton training course in Alice has experience working within the NHS, mental health and education services as a dramatherapist and theatre practitioner. She is a professional playwright and is a founding member of a new Playback Theatre group in Bristol. Esyllt George Esyllt is a Dramatherapist with an interest in Performance Art, and is currently studying for a Masters qualification in Death and Visual Cultures. Gillian Downie Gillian is a dramatherapist, gestalt psychotherapist and creative arts supervisor. For the past fifteen years she has worked as a therapist with children and adults in a variety of settings. She has initiated, organised and developed professional training workshops for the Sesame Institute in South Wales for the past ten years. She has co-facilitated CPD events with a range of therapists on themes such as The Soul and Death; Soulutions: Embodied Imagination and the Human Soul; Attachment, Survival and Human Relationships; The Secret Agent of Shame; Belonging, Fear and the Shadow Archetype. She is a tutor on the Welsh Psyche and Soma training a two year part time course for health professionals working with people who want to bring imagination and the body into their practice as languages of the human soul. Keith Hackwood Keith Hackwood is a Psychosynthesis therapist, Supervisor and Mindfulness teacher based in South Wales. He has worked collaboratively with drama & movement therapies across a range of settings, including schools and prison. As a poet Keith also brings the power of image, metaphor and story to bear upon the work. Melanie Beer Melanie Beer has been working as a dramatherapist across South Wales for the past 5 years. She has worked within health, education, the third sector and private practice with children, young people and adults with varying and complex needs. She facilitates workshops for continuing professional development and personal development and training events. She is part of Creative Therapies Collective - a not for profit arts therapies organisation based in south wales. Steve Mitchell Steve is a full-time dramatherapist in the NHS for twenty-seven years, director of Pathfinder Studio for thirty-five years, and for nine years was course director of dramatherapy at Roehampton. He is widely published on his ritual theatre form The Theatre of Self Expression and given numerous workshops nationally and internationally.
