1 Divine, Divinity A confrontation with divinity, your own higher intelligence, is going to change you. You ll face blazing activation of your brain. An inconceivable beyond, without conception, there flashes forth from its unknown depths the state of consciousness which is called divine. As well as being filled with resplendent divine light, the transcendental domains are often described as existing beyond the ordinary senses. Belief in the divinity of the Sacrament called for an act of faith, whereas the Mexican plants spoke for themselves. Contemplation is that condition of alert passivity, the immanent and transcendent Godhead, the state of union with the divine Ground of all being. Discovery of one s divine nature can lead to a way of being, on both an individual and a collective scale, incomparably superior to what is ordinarily considered the norm. Divine madness is described by the Greek philosopher Plato as a gift from the gods: The greatest blessings come by way of madness, indeed of madness that is heaven-sent. Eternity is now and in the light of unrepressed vision, the physical organism and the physical world turn out to be the divine world. Every enhancement of the separate personal self produces a corresponding diminuation of that self s awareness of divine reality. Few people have much conception of what a religious experience really is. Few people have any idea how the divine process presents itself. For more than four centuries, the Indians have kept the divine mushroom close to their hearts, sheltered from desecration by white men, a precious secret. For the divine, the real is not the construct; it is the natural, nonverbal and indescribable order. Go beyond your secular tribal mind to contact the many levels of divine energy which lie within your consciousness. God is divided in play, in make-believe, but remains undivided in reality, so that when the play comes to and end, the individualized consciousness awakens to find itself divine. I know myself to be part of a larger, unrestricted creative network that could be described as divine. Immortality is participation in the eternal now of the divine Ground; survival is persistence in one of the forms of time. Immortality is the result of total deliverance. In this state of knowledge of God, the mind is enlightened from out of the depths of divine wisdom which defy our scrutiny.

Many people discover a deep connection with an inner source, higher self, or God, and they might experience the world as an expression of the Divine. Many people report visions of brilliant light with a supernatural quality radiating divine intelligence or experience God as pure spiritual energy permeating all. Modern man no longer regards Nature as being in any sense divine and feels perfectly free to behave towards her as an overweening conqueror and tyrant. Mythological images are endowed with special power and numinosity that gives them divine status. (eyes closed) Nobody has yet invented a Spiritual Calculus in terms of which we may talk coherently about the divine Ground. On the threshold of the most profound and ultimate depths, we are faced with the revelation that our experience is contained within the depths of the Divine life itself. Once you have seen it all, experienced the divine flame, how can you play out a role in the silly TV drama of American society? One becomes intoxicated with divine feelings and becomes free from anger and other negativities. One can conceive of this great total pattern as having a transcendent uniqueness over and above the nature of its parts, that some might call its divinity. Perennial philosophy sees humans as essentially commensurate with the entire universe and ultimately divine. Pervasive feelings of the All rightness of the Universe and a humble gratitude are the overwhelming emotional responses to union or communion with the divine. Purged and purified, the soul approaches union with the Divine. Light, love and joy have become the only realities. Sexual love may be transformed into a type of worship in which the partners are for each other, incarnations of the divine. Subjects see new dimensions in the world and in the universe and tend to regard ordinary things and activities in everyday life as manifestations of the divine. Suchness of the divine Ground of all being reveals itself to those in whom there is no ego-centeredness, either of will, imagination, feeling or intellect. The archetypal visions accompanying the experience of cosmic unity are of heavens, celestial cities, paradisiacal gardens, and radiant divine beings. (eyes closed) The avatar, the divine one is he who discovers and lives out this rhythm during his earthly trip. The beautiful forms of life upon the earth combine and swirl and couple and embrace in the most incredibly intricate, divinely magnificent spectacle conceivable.

3 The concept of human life as a life-and-death struggle for survival gives way to a new image of a cosmic dance or divine play. The conscious ego doesn t know that it is something which that divine organ, the body, is only pretending to be. The devil is part of your mind that wants you to cop out and sell short your timeless divinity. The divine Ground of all existence is a spiritual Absolute, ineffable in terms of discursive thought, but susceptible of being directly experienced and realized by the human mind. The divine Ground of all existence is not merely a continuum, it is also out of time (beyond time, eternal). The divine process operates in time dimensions which are far beyond our routine secular space-time limits. The drug-induced experience has been regarded by primitives and even by the highly civilized as intrinsically divine. The existence of the immanent and transcendent divine is not a matter of unfounded belief but a fact based on direct experience. The law against LSD is a violation of a people s God-given right to experience their own divinity. The soul emerges into the radiance of the Divine Light and experiences spiritual rebirth, salvation, redemption, resurrection, reunion. The subject becoming aware of himself as continuous with the energy of the universe, feels himself to be filled by divinity. The two worlds, the divine and the human, are actually one. The realm of the gods is a forgotten dimension of the world we know. The virtue of wisdom, more than anything else, contains a divine element which always remains. There is indeed an almost universal tendency to express the divine in terms of radiating light. There was a time when the Jews exalted a man and made him divine and then nailed him up when they discovered he was human after all. They might begin to see the whole life process as a miraculous cosmic drama that is carefully orchestrated by a divine cosmic force.

4 This is what Jesus taught and demonstrated cosmic consciousness, the direct experience of divinity dwelling in us and all things. Through the Greek Mysteries, men became gods and celebrated their divinity in the ecstatic light-space geometries of the great temples. To believe that God is angry at sin and that His anger cannot be propitiated except by the offer of a certain sum of pain is to blaspheme against the divine Nature. True humor is, indeed, laughter at one s Self at the Divine Comedy, the fabulous deception (of the ego). Under the protection of their evening shadows, the farther water lay like a divine child asleep, watched by an eternal nurse. Wake up! You are God! You have the Divine plan engraved in cellular script within you. You ll be reborn. You are going to face blazing illumination of the divinity. It s going to change you completely. You re never going to be the same. Do you want to do it? Any and every shape human, divine, diabolical, heroic, evil, animal, thing which the human brain conjures up or the past life recalls, can present itself to consciousness: shapes and forms and sounds whirling by endlessly. Any contact with divinity not subject to priestly mediation and formulation in terms of traditional doctrines appears as a threat to the political and social order, and may be classified as madness or vice. Due in part to their ineffable and boundless nature, the divine domains are difficult to describe, although poets and mystics of all ages have created beautiful metaphors to approximate them. During some spiritual states, one sees the ordinary environment as a glorious creation of divine energy, filled with mystery; everything within it appears to be part of an exquisite interconnected web. Encounters with the divine regions are extremely healing. Reaching them, one often feels positive emotions such as ecstasy, rapture, joy, gratitude, love, and bliss, which can quickly relieve or dissolve negative states such as depression and anger. Every woman has built into her cells and tissues the longing for a hero, sage-mythic male, to open up and share her own divinity. But casual sexual encounters do not satisfy this deep longing. In order to become directly acquainted with God, rather than merely to know about God, one must go beyond symbols and concepts, which are obstacles to the immediate experience of the divine. It is a direct and immediate awareness that we are dealing with something that has a divine nature and is radically different from our ordinary perception of the everyday world.

5 Many people describe passing through a dark tunnel or funnel that brings them to light of supernatural brilliance and beauty, a divine being that radiates infinite, all-embracing love, forgiveness and acceptance. Perennial philosophy offers a rich spectrum of spiritual techniques through which it is possible to recognize and experience one s own divinity and achieve liberation from suffering. Peyote produces self-transcendence in two ways it introduces the taker into the Other World of visionary experience and it gives them a sense of solidarity with his fellow worshippers, with human beings at large and with the divine nature of things. Sexual union that occurs in the context of a powerful emotional bond can take the form of a profound mystical experience. All individual boundaries seem to dissolve and the partners feel reconnected to their divine source. So long as man feels himself to be the ego, to deprive him of freedom or the sense of freedom is to subject him to the despair of being a mere pawn of the divine tyrant. (No tyrant is divine.) Spiritual grace originates from the divine Ground of all being and it is given for the purpose of helping man to achieve his final end, which is to return out of time and selfhood to that Ground. Terror at the confrontation with the Divine is natural and instinctive and has been felt by every voyager on the great journey beyond the self. It s the fear of death, the loss of control. (There is no death and it s the ego that fears, loses control and dies.) The enlightened individual goes beyond grammar. He has what may be called a grammar-transcending experience which permits him to live in the consciousness of the divine continuum of the world and to see the one continually manifest in the many. The liberating aspect of rebirth and the affirmation of positive forces in the universe are frequently expressed in visions of radiant, blinding lights that has a supernatural quality and seems to come from a divine source. The religion of direct experience of the divine has been regarded as the privilege of a very few people. I personally don t think this is necessarily true at all. I think that practically everyone is capable of this immediate experience. The spirituality revealed in the process of focused self-exploration sees God as the Divine Within. Here the individual uses various techniques that mediate direct experiential access to transpersonal realities and discovers his or her own divinity. The wonder of LSD is that it can bring within the capabilities of ordinary people the experience of universal love and the reality of our divine nature which was once possible only to the mystics. There cannot be, in the ultimate analysis, different Gods for different religions. We may look upon God differently, we may have different approaches to the divine, but this force or power that we call God must be there for all.

6 Thou shalt evolve to a higher plane of being and ultimately return to the Godhead which is your very self, your ever-present Divine Condition prior to all conditions, names and forms. Trust your sense organs and your nervous system. Your divine body has been around a long, long time, much longer than any of the social games you play. Trust the evolutionary process. It s all going to work out all right. We have suggested that the divine mushroom played a vital part in shaking loose early man s imagination, in arousing his capacity for self-perception, for awe, wonder and reverence. They certainly made it easier for him to entertain the idea of God. All of creation people, animals, plants and inanimate objects seems to be permeated by the same cosmic essence and divine light. A person in this state suddenly sees that everything in the universe is a manifestation and expression of the same creative cosmic energy and that separation and boundaries are illusory. An important characteristic of collective and racial memories is the fact that the subject experiences them as insights into the diversity of cultural groups within the human race, illustrations of the history of mankind or manifestations of the cosmic drama and divine play. (eyes closed) Could it be that the universe is, in the final analysis, just a divine play of consciousness where all natural laws are ultimately arbitrary, and where any one of us, at any time, can somehow access any material that ever existed or will exist for anyone, anywhere, unfettered by the illusions of matter, space, and time? Here, the individual feels that he is experiencing the innermost divine core of his being. His individual self is losing its seemingly separate identity and is reuniting with what is perceived as its divine source, the Universal Self. This results in feelings of immediate contact or identity with the Beyond Within, with God. Holy madness or divine madness is known and acknowledged by various spiritual traditions and is distinguished from ordinary insanity; it is seen as a form of intoxication by the Divine. Revered seers, mystics, and prophets are often described as inspired by madness. In the final analysis, only the creative principle of Cosmic Consciousness exists. Only it takes physical form. From this point of view, the entire universe is a divine play of one Supreme Being. Anyone who grasps this concept will see that karmic appearances are just another level of illusion. Organized religion had little offer. Faith in an invisible divinity was not enough. What LSD promised was the direct, unmediated experience of self-transcendence the mystical enlightenment where we KNOW what the philosophers and the prophets talk about. The fates of nations and the lives of billions of people have been profoundly affected by the divine illuminations of spiritual prophets. We have only to remember the revelations of Buddha under the Bo tree, Moses on Mount Sinai, Jesus in the desert, Paul on the road to Damascus, and Mohammed during his visionary night journey for evidence of this.

7 The great religious leaders all found the same thing when they looked within. They all talked about the inner light, the soul, the divine flame, the spark or seed of life or the white light of the void. Those are clumsy metaphors for what are actually physiological processes within the nervous system. The human mind is not limited to biographically determined elements of the Freudian unconscious; it has no boundaries or limits and its dimensions are commensurate with those of the entire universe. From this point of view, it is more correct to see human nature as divine than as bestial. The inner experience of the spiritual Self and its intimate association with the personal self, gives a sense of internal expansion, of universality and the conviction of participating in some way in the divine nature. In the religious traditions and spiritual doctrines of every epoch one finds numerous attestations on this subject. The person feels a deep connection with the innermost spiritual core of his or her being. The illusion of the individual self fades away and the person enjoys reunion with his or her divine Self, which is also the Universal Self, the cosmic source of all existence. This is a direct and immediate contact with the Beyond Within, with God. There exists in all human beings an urge to self-transcendence, a wish to escape from the prison of personality, a longing to become something other and greater than the all-toofamiliar Me. The religious man has attributed this universal urge to self-transcendence to the workings of an innate and deep-seated yearning for the divine. True sanity entails, in one way or another, the dissolution of the normal ego and a new kind of ego functioning, the ego now being the servant of the divine, no longer its betrayer. (You are the divine and your ego should serve you and your divinity or it should flake off, take a hike, get lost and leave you alone.) Willingness to be insecure is the ultimate security. Willingness to suffer is the essence of divine joy. Willingness to be finite is to know one s own infinity. Willingness to be a slave is to be truly free. Willingness to be a fool and a sinner is to be both a sage and a saint. The individual is flooded by light of supernatural beauty and experiences a state of divine epiphany. He or she has a deep sense of emotional, intellectual and spiritual liberation and gains access to breathtaking realms of cosmic inspiration and insight. This type of experience is clearly responsible for great achievements in the history of humanity in the area of science, art, religion and philosophy. They re not interested in mystical experience at divinity schools. They re interested only in words and in history. If someone had a mystical vision a safe 2000 years ago and left some record of it, that might interest them. But mystical experience, the raw and vital force that gives rise to a religion, is too much for them to cram into their semantic, pseudoscientific endeavor to understand God. All beings are the masks of the one, divine Self. All creatures have existed eternally in the divine essence. All forms of matter and all living beings are seen as patterns of divine consciousness. Blissful divinity accompanies the ecstatic experience. Discover and nurture your own divinity.

8 Discover your atomic, cellular, somatic, sensory divinity. Divine grace does not obliterate nature but perfects it. Divine realms come into a person s life, the heavenly inner realms. Divinity is a do it yourself proposition, located somewhere inside your body. Divinity is our birthright, our inheritance, nearer to us than hand and foot. Each human being is born divine. The social system robs him of his divinity. Each person is born divine and the purpose of life is to rediscover your forgotten divinity. Every energy is divine. Immerse yourself in the energy, the divine energy of creation. Indians believe peyote to be of divine origin. Indians use peyote as a means of communion with the divine world. Individuals frequently encounter ecstatic or divine domains within themselves. LSD helps you find divinity and helps you discover yourself, discover God and meaning. Man can change and become divine in this lifetime. Nature is full of genius, full of the divinity. One often experiences the Divine as eternal and timeless. Our insight into the divine plan becomes more awe-fully detailed. Playfulness is the very nature of divine Wisdom. Relax, float downstream, trust your divinity, trust your energy process. Silence, like space and emptiness, is a natural symbol of the divine. Step into the light of freedom and divine responsibility. The confrontation with divinity is going to change you. The Divine Comedy. All things dissolve in laughter. The Divine is not out there, but present within each of us. The divine sight is opened. The substance which produces the change of mind is regarded as divine. The ultimate reason for human existence is unitive knowledge of the divine Ground. To live means to be aware, joyously, serenely, divinely aware. Trust your divinity. Trust your brain. Use the senses to find inner meaning, divinity. We can discover that the divine impulse is everywhere. You are God, but only you can discover and nurture your divinity. Your true and basic selfhood is divine. I am aware that each man on the street has some spark of the divine. I can now understand the psychology of divine inspiration or of magical thinking. The gleam of the divine ravishes me. For the first time, I was experiencing the universe for what it really is an unfathomable mystery, a divine play of energy.

As I wept with joy, feelings of love became so intense that I knew they could only be of divine origin and that this feeling was actually God residing within myself and in all other persons. I felt that somehow every person must be made to recognize the divine within himself and that such a recognition would influence his every action throughout life. It seemed to me that our lives were hopelessly confused and cluttered with mundane things of no real importance; and that the matter of greatest importance, the presence of a God part in each of us, lay within our reach at all times. A deep gratitude came for the privilege of seeing this divine part of myself and others. A divine calm swept through my soul. Everything you looked at was pulsing and glowing with divine radiance. I felt in touch with a sense of divinity within. I had a sudden awakening to the innermost divinity of all things. I knew beyond the shadow of any doubt that there was a divine spirit behind all creation. I was melting into that iridescent current of divine love. One pot was so endowed with divinity that I wouldn t come closer than 4 or 5 feet. The essence of the experience was the encounter with the divinity within. The music sounded divine.
