We have had these for two years. They often hang on the side walls but can be forgotten or not noticed. They will be with us for the course of Ordinary Time. Ordinary time is that season that tracks the normal course and life of Jesus teachings and deeds. It is interrupted so to speak by the other seasons of the Church: Purple for the Advent and Lent seasons, and then White for the Christmas and Easter seasons. Red is for the days where we honor the events of the Holy Spirit or the life of the Martyrs, signifying their blood. We also use white for the days that honor Mary or the Saints. Ordinary Time (ordered numbered weeks) will continue until the First Week of Advent which arrives at the end of November. The flowers you sometimes see are often left over from Funerals or donated by parishioners. The Peace Lilies you see are the most durable plant for our church due to the limited amount of sunlight. The Pope is winding down the Year of Mercy next month and wants to spend some time on the Works of Mercy. He will speak on them over the weeks ahead during his Wednesday audiences with pilgrims traveling to Rome. The Vatican issued this summary: During this Holy Year of Mercy, we have reflected on God s mercy, revealed especially in the incarnation of his Son, and on our duty, as followers of Jesus, to be "merciful like the Father. In Saint Matthew s Gospel, the Lord tells us that we will be judged by the mercy we show to him, present in the least of our brothers and sisters. His words have inspired the seven traditional "corporal works of mercy feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, welcoming the stranger, healing the sick, visiting the imprisoned and burying the dead. The Church s tradition also adds seven "spiritual works of mercy counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing sinners, comforting the afflicted, forgiving offenses, bearing patiently those who do us ill, and praying for the living and the dead. As expressions of living faith, these works are often carried out quietly and with simple gestures. Yet, as saints like Mother Teresa of Calcutta show us, they reveal the merciful face of Christ and can change the culture around us. Let us keep them always in mind and strive to practice them daily. In his Wednesday audience the pope explained that mercy should not be manifest only in isolated gestures, but must be a constant attitude in everyday life, the Pope said: "How can we be witnesses of mercy? This is not by undertaking great tasks or superhuman gestures. No, it's Cont.

October 22 & 23, 2016 PAGE 3 The Lord tells us there is a much simpler way, composed of small gestures. However, in His eyes these have great value in the way that He told us that these gestures will be judged. In a world sadly affected by the virus of indifference, the works of mercy are the best antidote. In fact, they educate us to be attentive to the most basic needs of our 'smallest brothers and sisters. If each of us, every day, do one work of mercy, there will be a revolution in the world. Everyone, ok? Each one of us." These small daily gestures, the pope said, are those that produce a true "cultural revolution." He gave the example of saints like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who made history not by opening houses, but by showing how to treat those most in need. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg Wednesday, November 9 6:00-8:30 pm Bishop Hall The Director s Cut Film Presentation of THE ORIGINAL IMAGE OF DIVINE MERCY An Extraordinary Film for an Extraordinary Year!
